NeoGAF Gaming Olympics Interest Thread

Fracas

#fuckonami
As the title says, I'd like to garner interest for a mega, GAF-wide gaming olympics. This could potentially be a huge undertaking, as it would involve hundreds of people and would span multiple weeks. If this turns out to be something a large amount of people would like to participate in, I'll need volunteers.

If enough people would want to do this, I'd suggest we have "nations" led/organized by an "President". Teams would be filled by their respective team leaders, after breaking off into individual team threads.

What say you, GAF?

USA VS WORLD!

The only way to do it.

I would be interested pending enough people (Around 50 or so participants would be nice)

I don't understand how this would work or what games we would play. On the other hand it sounds awesome.

Well I guess it would be by popularity.

COD would be a popular one.
Counter Strike.
Left 4 Dead 2
Gears
Halo

The bigger problem would be everyone not having access to multiple consoles or a PC.

I imagine what could happen is we would either vote here or create a separate thread for voting on the games we would play. As for the schedule, we could do something like this:

Monday(Xbox 360 event)-5:00 PM EST- Halo Reach
Tuesday(Playstation 3 event)-5:00 PM EST- Killzone 3
Wednesday(PC event)-5:00 PM EST- Team Fortress 2

With each day of the week being console-centric, ie Xbox 360 events taking place only on Mondays.

However, a schedule like this would be heavily dependent on the number of competitors.

That's why you have a team. If your team had 40 or 50 guys on it, you shouldn't have too much trouble fielding a group for each game.

God that sounds boooring. It says Olympics, not 100m dash only.
There should be every genre. Puzzles, strategy, sports, fighters, racing and so on. Then you'd have team members specialized on one or more games. Otherwise call it shooter mega tourney or something.

That's what I'm shooting for
(No pun intended)

Yep. You can elect members of the community to give input on game selection.

For instance, you can set up a thread for FGC-GAF to argue over which fighting game is best and why they're game is more deserving than others' for the spot!

Just a hypothetical list.(All those shooters are drastically different from one another anyways.)

But again, the more events/genres there are, we will need more people. Would be boring if the same 7-8 people doing everything.

International online play for fighting games might be kinda hard, considering how some of the recent popular fighting games handle lag very badly.

Are there any other specific games I should watch out for, in terms of international lag? I can make sure that any fighting game matches are done in the same country.

Based on popularity, player pool and interest on GAF that I measure from threads, I would suggest UMvC3, SSFIVAE2012 (or SFxTK for this slot, but I doubt it) and KoFXIII as far as fighting games would go. Maybe Mortal Kombat too depending on how many games you want, even though it's not the most popular or active game ever it seems.

MK don't get no love on GAF. >_>

Caveman Games or bust.

Reminds me of something I used to do. When I was a community moderator for the Minecraft forums, way back before Multiplayer Survival really took off, me and someone named RealG organized the Minecraft Clan Olympics. We essentially did things like spleef and racing around pre-made obstacle courses, mainly because it was fun and and because each little community clan got to show off. If I ever tried to do it today, though, I'd be simply swamped with the sheer potential provided by mods and so many more players.

Well, I need to get some sleep. Let's see how it goes overnight, and if there's enough interest maybe I'll get some preliminary signups going.

Sounds like a cool idea. The first time GAF does it should be kinda broad, like all the major genres but the games themselves should just be the big name ones. Then in subsequent "olympics" you can add more specialized games after you've garnered which genres had major interest and which ones didn't.
Also I'm down to help if you need it.

If Trophies are Involved

SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!

***Ringer!***

Also add Burrito Buffalo Flash Game, Parts I & II

GAFfers would be Marathoning for days

There was once an Olympic medal for architecture.

Is that enough to justify the inclusion of "LBP level design"?

I did actually muse on a 'gaming book club' idea along similar lines; the idea being that the game for a given week's play would be available for a sufficiently low price that the barrier for entry wasn't too prohibitive, and it could inject a little life into the online of some dead games. That'd include SP rather than being pure multiplayer, of course.

Thanks! If this takes off, I could definitely use the help.
Shameless bump
This needs to happen!
