OP is somehow right in criticizing the shallow and empty responses to the woke culture, which don't contribute in any way. There is a need for constructive criticism and exchange of arguments and ideas, not some childish namecalling etc. This can't happen in a closed hivemind, i.e reddit or resetera.

Now, where I think he's wrong is that we're supposedly to adapt to new "normal". Stop criticizing and crying over obvious bullshit. You've all seen it when DLC, MTX, writing with obvious agendas were first strongly rejected, but then accepted as a new baseline. I will not do that, I will protest till the end when bullshit appears. The problem was never concretely about bluehair, or gays or anything, but the fact that it's shoved and pushed into the medium on purpose, even though everyone with brain knew it will upset many people. I actually don't disagree with you I am driving home and I have a little bit of a typo there but it is a privilege to be in a country like the United states. I was talking to my friend about this and in some ways the quicker the collapse happens then you could rebuild from that but if things go the wrong way you could have a thousand or 2,000 year run of absolute crap and dictatorship. Is still is a middle ground. Lots of people still buy the games we complain about. I could spend $75 on a game and still not like the character or story they made. The game is fun but the point of X or Y being there is pretty obvious. It's the "you must think this way if you buy our game" mentality. The other side hates to hear opinions that are the opposite. They warn people all the time for saying the opposite. I don't care if someone here hates a game because the character has a cuck story to his profile. I'm glad we can talk about it. That isn't award winning material. It's a dead end to mediocre story.

It's not making games any better. It's just making something that isn't art, art. It's all going to become nothing in 10-20 years when none of it holds any weight. None of the dialog from Veilguard is going to be referenced outside some college essay on video games and diversity. No one will want to replay that game. A lot of these changes just phase out and move onto the next thing.

It's good we include different backgrounds and accept each other. It's just lame that we have to say good things about it when we don't actually feel that way.

Western devs — American devs — used to push storytelling boundaries in ways that are still interesting today. The Ultima series explored morality and virtue, then deconstructed it. Planescape Torment gave the player real agency and explored identity and memory. Then you had the immersive sim with Ultima Underworld and System Shock and Deus Ex et al, letting you unfold stories in different ways, storytelling through environment and uncovering audio files.

It is laughable how far we've devolved from that point, with the recent exception of E33. I used to play Japanese games for classic storytelling and tight mechanics, and western games for depth and player choice. Now I mainly play Japanese games until a BG3 or Cyberpunk occasionally rolls around. American game dev pretty much died with Prey 2017.

Yup, Ultima 4 was the first RPG I ever played, and it actually had a major part in shaping my world view. Will forever remain one of my all-time favorites, a game where the ultimate fight isn't some external, existential threat. There were literally no boss battles, no central villain, none of it. Just an exploration of the human condition, a battle to strive to be better than where you started to inspire others to also better themselves. Still the best thing Garriot ever made IMO.
