NeoGAF Plays Perfect Dark Zero again before putting it away forever

This is the 360's "Killzone 2".

Great graphics and massive multiplayer battles but horrible controls.

At least whoever made KZ2 patched the controls on it...can't say the same for Rare.

I'd even agree with you, somewhat, on the controls, but beyond that it's just not even close. PDZ is a mess, KZ2 I can at least recognize as a pretty good game (but not my cup of tea).

I actually played this recently with my friend who I said should probably get it or something since it has co-op and cost like £3 nowadays. Truly an awful game but what the hell.

Putting away forever... yeah, i like the idea!

Done.

Sounds fun but Gamestop doesn't sell the game anymore and Amazon list the chepest copy at like $10 that's essentially $30 when I add in a gold card which is kind of expensive for a game that I'll never play again after two weeks.

Always meant to play it because of former love for Rare. Bought it at launch with my 360, just couldn't get into it. Played a bit of multi but the main game just didn't click with me.

Put it away for years, one day hoping my brother would get a 360 and a copy and we could play co-op or something...... he did, but we still haven't bothered to play it lol.

One day maybe. Just such a low opinion of it, so disappointing. Makes it hard to justify playing it above other things I actually want to play. I guess that is why I never got round to it.

gamestop has it used for 4.99

Wow, I didn't expect the reactions would be this bad.
I loved the multiplayer of the game, still not sure if I gonna play PDZ again but I will give it a thought.

I didn't buy an Xbox 360 at launch so I picked up the game after the initial hype/dissapointment and some singleplayer levels were quite awesome. You have to play the game on dark or perfect agent, otherwise you only get half of the objectives. If you're looking for a COD or Halo like experience you won't get it but Perfect Dark Zero is special in its own way. Too bad some levels did suck and Rare had to rush the Xbox 360 version because it was shaping up to be a great game.

Can't we all just pretend we played it and move on ? I mean, the game was dissapointing enough in 2005. There's no need to revisit it knowing that it was one of Rare's worst efforts this gen. I'd rather spend my time in Rapture. Hell I'd rather play Doom 3.

Hmm I was going by their website which lists the only option as "download" it, this may change things a bit.

Also off topic but is anyone having issues with the store locater on GS websites? It's telling me that nothing is in stock where I live and I've tested it on some rather big titles.

And the multiplayer. You can't deny that if the game controlled well it would have some of the best multiplayer experiences on current gen consoles.

I really hate this game for being so close to great but having one critical flaw. Just popped it in and the graphics are a mixed bag...that's true. But the online options and modes and the smooth as silk 32 player games from what I remember...it was all marred by the horrible controls that even today I could not stand.

Never-equalled netcode for 32 players online, inventive weapons, amazing reloading animations, and best of all: customizable bots. Despite all its other drawbacks, PDZ has to be lauded for these achievements.

Someone PLEASE screenshot the last boss for me. I've already beat the game, but always laughed hysterically at the last boss and wanted to show friends, but I can never find a screen.

I'm definitely in for this:
Everdred : Everdred Zero

I still play this game a couple times a month.

Netcode is SO GOOD.

I could never bring myself to do that to any video game. Even if it was a bad one.
Seems like a dick move to me. There are a lot of people that would gladly take that and play it, even if it is Perfect Dark Zero.

oh man, i remember my first time winning an eradication round all by myself, it was 5 on 5 n old town and i had the shotgun (motion sensor 2nd function) and i sprinted over to the enemy area, used the motion sensor and then wasted the entire team one by one. it was sooooo awesome!

I didnt even complete the story I don't think, but I sunk hours into the multiplayer. Amazing the shit you play when the library is small.

It was one of the first games I bought on launchday. Played alot of it untill the savedata got corrupted, so I never looked back on it. I think I don't even played this game on my HDTV ever since I have it.

I guess it's cool and easy to hate on a game that's probaly too hard for them to play. And to think these people rather have the N64 game to play with.

PDZ was my first PD game and I like to keep it that way. I wasn't a fan of FPS back in the day untill I played Halo CE, so games like Goldeneye 64(played a little at friends place back in the day) or PD went past me.

Haters, you can keep that shitty PD64 to yourself. Every PDZ thread turns into a hatefest that is annoying as hell. Fuckers.

The fact that Gamestop doesn't even have it out on its shelf anymore begs to differ.

Terrible game, indeed. I played a lot of the multiplayer (mainly because it had split-screen online play) until I got CoD2, then put it away forever. At least I sold it when it was still worth something.

I'm still wondering whatever the hell Rare did with that netcode. Virtually "lag free" 32 player P2P multiplayer in an FPS title is completely unheard of and no one has come close since.

PDZ got so much of the multiplayer aspect right and it was a very ambitious project, it had a crapload of potential and could make for an awesome sequel. Its still unmatched (on consoles) in a lot of areas despite suffering from some pretty major flaws the most acute of which being the near complete lack of auto aim that makes the controls insanely difficult for anyone used to your average console FPS that is jam packed with auto aim and self correcting crosshairs. If the game supported a KB&M it would have been epic.

Fuck the haters. I recognise the game had many, many faults, but during the launch of the 360 it seemed absolutely amazing. So many fond memories.

I'll never go back, because it would probably ruin them. :lol

I tried playing this yesterday. I lasted all of 5 minutes before ejecting the disc in disgust.

Save yourself the trouble and just don't bother with this turd.

edit: I'll probably play it more before PD XBLA is out because I'm a masochist.
Ya I just tried the demo.

So bad :lol :lol

Pre-launch

This game is going to rock, it's got online co-op, split screen multiplayer, 32 player online multiplayer and is a launch title for the Xbox 360 so it's going to be the best looking game around! I can't wait, this is the 360's Halo!

10 minutes after starting to play it

It's okay, I'll just tweak the sensitivity... and maybe.. turn on the auto aim... no that doesn't work... turn off the fast turn... that helped a little... Why does it look so bad!?

This game nearly ruined my 360 launch purchase, thank goodness I'm a huge PGR fan. King Kong was also fun. Much more fun than PDZ. I played it again earlier today (without seeing this thread) I'd forgotten there is only one check point per level when playing Perfect Agent. I was right at the end of the first level (mission 0) when I died and I was sent back by about 10-15 minutes of progress. The game was then turned off.

It just isn't good, and should have been delayed, because the guys at Rare must've known it stunk. At least with it installed to the HDD it loaded pretty quickly.

The problem was that it was very lenient when it came to the client-server conversation. Normally, both clients send data to the server (such as shooting someone who appears on your screen to be in front of your crosshairs) while the server decides who is right. In PDZ, the server simply assumed that you were right, making EVERYONE right regardless of ping. Thus, you could get killed seconds after hiding behind cover, but since there was no glitching or ghosting you assumed there was no lag at play.

I bought this game last month for like $12 new/shipped from Newegg.com. Just checked and it is $13 shipped now...so if anyone wants to check it out. My copy is still sealed. Been too immersed in MAG and BFBC2 to give it a shot. I will be doing so prior to the release of PD XBLA, though!

I'm probably one of the few that liked the single player. The single player sucks if you view it as a linear, story-based shooter, but is pretty cool if you approach it as more old school "try to get through this perfectly without dying" type of thing. I liked the different objectives tied to the different difficulties as well. I beat Perfect Agent, but I don't think I'll ever get the Dark Agent achievement though :lol

I loved single player too. :) Th higher difficulties felt so similar to going through Goldeneye on 00 Agent... there's a fine art to going as painfully slow as possible through a level because you know a few bullets kill you. The number of times I'd run into enemy sight, then back around a corner waiting to pounce... :lol

I remember on Dark Agent, during the level with the big bridge, I found it IMPOSSIBLE to go up across it, so I went down underneath into the weird rooms they had there, and camped for literally 30-45 minutes taking everyone out as they ran towards me. Then I came so close to dying on the invisible enemies that had the energy pulse rifle things at the very end. I did it, though. :D

I'd have that fucking achievement if it wasn't for the Jungle level. I attempted it God knows how many times, watching every single guide possible, and I still couldn't do it. I mean, at the start you basically have to glitch the enemy spawning to even survive. It's that bad.

When you take the higher difficulties into account I must have played 30/40 hours alone on the single player. Jesus.

Gamertag is Abombb, just send me an invite if a game is going to get started.

While the game has not aged as well to me, it still had a pretty intriguing multiplayer setup.
Loved the neverending capture the flag matches:lol

I'm in, but the game IS shit.

I actually competed in Gamebattles for it back in the day when the hype was up there so I know it can be quite a competent competitive title when the settings are right.

Phatal FaZe

This will be the last time I ever play this game.

This would be my definition of hell. I'm getting dangerously close to breaking my self imposed embargo on PDZ hate. It was getting out of hand.

One of the worst FPSs i've played this generation. But the MP was fun, i might dig out my copy and see what's happening online.

Heh. What can I say, it gave me some nostalgic fun that I hadn't felt since 1997 with Goldeneye, and it was during the slow launch period of the 360. Plus I was 15 at the time, so not only did I have a lot of time on my hands, but I wasn't as critical of games as I am now. :)

Edit: I just looked at the achievements, and no wonder I only have 550 points for it. Some of those multiplayer achievements are insane... play 1000 games of each mode.

I found PDZ really cheap second hand last year and thought "It's dirt cheap and it's a Rare game, I might as well give it a go"
I played the first level and then sealed the disc away, never to be seen again.

The single player is mediocre but the multiplayer was great, sure it's shit in comparison to the original, but saying it's a horrible game or one of the worst shooters ever is just BS rhetoric.

It's his money.

If the Junior wants to be labeled as stupid while trying to look cool on the interwebz, leave him be.

All I remember about the multiplayer was being in a game with a ton of people trying to glitch-roll their way into areas. Then we tried split screen, which was pretty horrible as it was hard seeing where we were/what we were doing (the darkness levels were all over the place).

And that was the end of my multiplayer experience.

I am in. This was a great multiplayer game. It was buggy, but it had the spirt and heart of Goldenye/PD at its core, and until the double-whammy of Halo 3/COD4, it was one of the most fun online shooters on Live.

I'm in. Still love the multiplayer, although I've played far less of it than I'd have liked due to jumping onto the 360 a year post-launch.

DJLay.

Terrible game but I never really invested much time into the multi so what the hell, sure I'll play.

Discuss.

There are many things wrong with PDZ, but you're right, at least the soundtrack is awesome. I wish Microsoft didn't rush the release for the launch, the game was obviously not ready. I hope that Rare will get another chance to make the PD shine again.
