NeoGAF Plays Perfect Dark Zero again before putting it away forever

There are many things wrong with PDZ, but you're right, at least the soundtrack is awesome. I wish Microsoft didn't rush the release for the launch, the game was obviously not ready. I hope that Rare will get another chance to make the PD shine again.

The XBLA release will sell tons. If it hasn't already been greenlit, that will ensure it is.

Also, PDZ has a review average of something like 80 and it sold over a million copies. I think a sequel is certain, eventually.

The sequel already got canned and Rare are said to be working on new IP according to their interview in GamesTM the other month.

We've all seen those leaks from that ex-Rare artist who posted animation reels from Kameo 2 and PDZ 2, but at the end of the day the PDZ 2 footage was basically just animations for new weapons, with the same old bangled Jo wrists from PDZ in there.

The artist - and Rare - have never commented on what they're actually from, and whereas the Kameo animations actually say Kameo 2 and sport a heavily redesigned Kameo in them, the PDZ animations just have generic file names and are basically new weapons in the hands of PDZ models. Seeing as they're the same PDZ models/engine/art style, they're either extremely early or from the Counter-Op DLC that was announced and canned after the map packs failed to sell. Rare said early on that the Counter-Op DLC was going to have new weapons.

Rare are a pretty fucking massive studio, and while they're undoubtedly working on new IP, I strongly believe PD and Banjo will continue to be revisited. They've enough teams there to work on Natal stuff and other stuff, but obviously right now the focus is on the Natal as it's only six to nine months out.

I agree the single player was at best average but the multiplayer was pretty damn awesome. I loved how all the weapons had a quirky second feature and the animations and sound effects wasn't too shabby. Its a shame I already got rid of my copy when the online community died but I truly hope no matter what Rare do to the single player in the sequel I hope the multiplayer is still as fun to play.

I was actually just playing this online last night with a buddy after deciding that 1 on 1 in Call of Duty MW 2 just wasn't cutting it. I've always loved the fact that they integrated local multi-player with online play, and the mechanics still hold up really well in my opinion. The variety of weapons, integration of vehicles and great net code set it apart. I just wish functions like running, crouching and cover were better developed. It's annoying to have to zig zag and roll all the time in open areas to avoid getting blasted.

Anyway, count me in for a PDZ reunion.

Really enjoyed it, despite its many bugs and glitches. Never did really understand the degree of hate it received...well, I guess when compared to the first I could. I could say that about almost any shooter when compared to PD64 though...

This thread makes me sad.

I'll never play PDZ again as long as I live. How could they make it so awful? 10% of GE007 should still be awesome :(

Not at all, PDZ does have cumbersome design issues, I mean I could list control alterations that would be more logical right now, however, the amount of strategy in a game with so many people is still boggling, especially compared to the likes of halo.

Things that make pdz stand out.

Weapon balance, really, there is nothing better out there, the only heel in this is the super dragon which can be disabled, but the rest of the weapons, for every power they have, is a counteractive measure.

Radar system, the aspect of only showing up on radar while firing is really great, and gives greater purpose to take the damage hit while using the more accurate silencers.

Options, in what other games can you make enemies see their friends as an enemy, causing hilarious friendly fire incidents, set up laptop turrets, hack other laptop turrets, blind radar systems with a sniper, hack into mines causing self explosions, ricochet bullets off walls to kill campers, turn invisible at will, control remote control rockets, steal weapons, make yourself come off as a friendly on radar using the shotgun.. I could go on and on, pdz has such a vast amount of tricks you have to factor, all while being FAIR. The weapons also feel amazingly well done, every shot feels good, the reloading animations are spectacular, the shotgun in pdz is one of the most satisfying weapons of all time.

Aside from that, PDZ also uses a better health/armor system then pretty much anything, I like knowing that a person I just shot up will not have full health when I encounter them again. Also, the crosshair system was very nice, a person who plays with patience will get kills in a couple seconds, a person who spazzes and sprays will always lose, the finess and skill required to get a kill is very satisfying, and I always smile when I see noobs bitch about it taking 100 bullets to kill someone, they are the types I run into a room and get 8 kills before dying.

Also, the mixture of death match and dark ops, brilliant.

There is just so much to use in pdz, and the strategic aspects are very deep, so deep that it's worth it to dig through it's issues. yes the cover mechanic is clunky, some functions could simply have been mapped to one button (why can't R stick click be punch while B is tertiary fire or something), and the movement feels a bit sluggish, however, when all is considered, i'd rather play PDZ today then halo, gears, graw, rainbow six, modern warfare, etc.

did I mention that pdz still has the best netcode of any shooter ever created? The fact I have NEVER experienced lag outside of a little slowdown which is rare, is insane. I can't play a game of halo, gears or modern warfare without some kind of lag being noticable, but pdz is still to this day untouched on 360 in netcode.

All of that, and its still considered shit by some, I just assume those people are horrible players.

Those seem more like reasons you like the game and less about what makes the game deep. This isn't a knock or anything, I just think the things you mentioned (outside of weapon balance) are just some specific points on why the game appeals to you.

The health system is the opposite of deep, since a good player will eventually die no matter what they do after a few battles. You can get kills on good players without putting as much effort as it would take otherwise.

Headshots and bursting only really beat sprayers at medium and long range. At close range it's a much more even split depending on the weapons being used. You wont last long against dual CMP's, UGLs, or frequent grenade spam with the Super Dragon or FAC.

And the weapons are horribly imbalanced. Most of the weapons either have some fatal flaw that take away from the game as a whole (grenade spamming with the SD or throwing a laptop gun that eats up your armour within a second), or they lack a real purpose with other weapons beating them in every way (M60, Psychosis Gun, UGL, or Shockwave). Don't even get me started on the vehicles.

I love PDZ and I'm looking forward to playing with you, but I completely disagree with the idea that this game is deep or balanced.

I actually really enjoyed/enjoy PDZero.

I CAN see why it gets hate, but I still like it. Had it since launch day in Australia and am one of the ONLY 360 owners I know to have held on to his disc :lol

Multiplayer was great... for it's time. Had a lot of innovation in guns, devices and game types. But the game is all over the place graphically. Some maps/textures look god awful some look amazing. Really there wasnt a lot to play back then.

Played the game last week. Well I only played the multiplayer. I couldn't enjoy it. I found The Conduit's multiplayer more enjoyable.

Almost bought a 360 day one for this game, then I played a demo. :(

I really don't get the high reviews this game got when clearly it was inferior to not only the 64 version put FPS games that cameout around the same time.

Also the music is like I don't know very bad when you compare it PD64.

Actually, in my opinion the soundtrack is one of the few highlights of the game. It's a much different style than the original but still very well composed.

I still don't understand why this game gets the hate that it does. Maybe it's because I didn't buy a 360 on day one and have all the hopes and weight of a great game library resting on this single title. The story is absolute garbage, but who plays these games for their story anyways? The story of PD1 was garbage also. PDZ had the best co-op of its time, IMO.

Pdz is one of the best multiplayer shooters on a console, ever. Anyone who says otherwise is shit on the game and I challenge you to a 1 on 1 :)

GT is goldenpp75

Golden PP I thought XBL made you change your gamertag? What happened with that?

So in my anticipation for PD XBLA and in the spirit of masochism, I've been hosting and playing matches on good ol' PDZ as I said I would.

I think it's a decent retrospective more than anything. Playing the game and wondering why they made certain design decisions (slow movement, map design, control scheme, etc. etc.)

so anyway, if you want to join in on some mindless PDZ action in the days and weeks leading up to PD XBLA, you can join me GT: Cerrius

Please don't kill me for the bump but I feel we need to give this game a shot one more time. It's been 4 years. Lets reminisce about the first great fps on the xbox 360 once more! For those who don't have it, stop by gamestop and pick it up for $2! As you know the platinum hits version includes 6 extra maps! I'll be on tonight around 7pm est. Gamertag is neomerge.

I have this game, and spent a lot of time playing it, and even I have no interest in doing this. Y'all are crazy. God speed.

But PDZ was the only futuristic fps we had until Halo 3 dropped. Unless we were still holding on to Halo 2 which I definitely did as well.

This game does not age well. I still don't know why I played through it. I guess it's a launch game thing as my experience with Killzone Shadow Fall provided the same amount of "joy
frustration
."

My question is anyone even semi-regularly playing OG Perfect Dark from XBLA now?

Perfect Dark is still one of my all-time favorite FPS games. That weapon arsenal simply cannot be beat and the fact that not only could the multiplayer handle 8 bot characters, but they could be set to PUNISHING levels of difficulty.

(I'd love to pick it up again with this MCC lull before the update. OG PD, not PDZ, lol)

i loved playing infected when the 360 launched, that game mode was amazing and it seemed unfair since all skeletons only have pistols but it worked

i might be down to play if i find my copy

I can confirm no one was on PD or PDZ last night. :(
