For anyone using this list as a starting point, I've provided links for the top twenty-five manga on the list where you can find more information about each series. I'd encourage everyone who voted on this list to champion some of their favorite titles below, providing a bit of art, a description, and a link of some sort. I'm also looking forward to seeing everyone hash out the details. Enjoy!

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Good job, FnordChan!

Also, I called it! Berserk at least.

Wait....no one voted "3 X 3 Eyes" ?
Jesus christ, its not even in the 230 manga listed, yet Naruto is in the top 20? What the fuck?

Yay, Hajime No Ippo & Monster in top10. It's a solid list and lots of manga for me to read. And I will start with Yotsuba&!.

speedpop

Has problems recognising girls
I'm somewhat glad Eden hit #20. I'd have preferred it to be up in the top 5 at least merely because it takes the genres of sci fi, cyberpunk and warfare and literally tips them out and start anew.

Happy about Monster and 20th CB being in the top 10 though :D

So Lone Wolf & Cub is in the top 10...

Is it really worth reading? I've read all of Lady Snowblood and bits of other stuff Kazuo Koike has done including the first volume of Lone Wolf, and it didn't seem to hold up all that well in the modern day. Can some people who voted for it give a brief review?

I love LW&C. My absolute favorite manga. I suspect you have to be pretty into Samurai and the time period to get into it, but if you are, it's exquisite. The badass sword technique alone is worth the cost of admission.

NHK was robbed. If only I had voted, but I don't think I've even read 10 different Manga before. :(

Gantz, NHK, and sgt Frog should be higher. good list overall though. One Piece rocks.

Seriously, I think that NHK is one of the worst series I've ever read.

Lone Wolf and Cub is absolutely worth reading, combining beautifully stylized art, tense, kinetic action sequences, and tons of historical detail to create an epic saga that doesn't neglect quiet moments and tells the tragic story of a lone warrior and his son seeking revenge. Once it gets rolling it's a helluva ride and the ending is excellent. Highly recommended

If you find 28 volumes a bit daunting, consider checking out Samurai Executioner, which combines the same team that gave you LW&C (and with all the gorgeous art and historical detail that entails), but with a more modest scope, offering tales of crime and justice in Edo period.

By the way, I see several of you lamenting the placement of various titles on the list. Instead of griping, take a few minutes to pimp your favorites so others might check them out.

so much disinterest around Video Girl Ai..

VIDEO-GIRL1.jpg

buy it, you won't regret it. Youta is a clumsy 16 years old student, hopelessly in love with his school friend Moemi. She's in love with Takashi, Youta's best friend and the usual cool looking guy. Moemi doesn't know about Youta's true feelings (Youta's sdamn shy) , and she considers him her best friend. One day Youta's returning home and a strange videoshop appears in the middle of the road..a videoshop for those whose heart is bleeding. And the true story begins
It's the best shojo manga I've ever read: excellent art, dialogues, story, ending. You will fall in love with Ai. Beautiful.

Jojo's Bizarre adventures (six series)

if you like great action, this one is for you. Pick the third serie and experience Jotaro Kujo's Stand (a virtual warrior whose power varies from host to host) Star Platinum, his fiery granpa Joseph Joestar and his friends try to defeat the evil Dio Brando, whose Stand can control time, and his terrifying followers
the fourth serie sees Josuke Higashikata, Jotaro's 16 years old uncle, and his immensely powerful Crazy Diamond trying to stop a ferocious serial killer whose Stand has incredible powers in the small Japanese city of Morio Cho

the fifht is placed in Italy. Giorno Giovanna wants to become the best gangster ever existed...but the unknown leader of the organization called Passione, wants him and his band to do him one last favour: bring his daughter to him..to kill her because she's the only one who can recognize him! Obviously all the characters have funny Stands, and the Leader has the most dangerous one ever

the sixth serie, in America, sees Jolyne Kujo, Jotar's daughter, against a whole jailhouse of criminals because their unknown leader wants to steal her power and his father's..and he can do it thanks to his incredible Whitesnake!
All the series are subsequential, and all involve Dio Brando in a way or another. Incredible fun, really. I consider the fourth serie the best since we finally know how Stands originated and because a lot of common people seems to host 'em. But overall great read

Whoa, aside from Berserk and One Piece at the top, the list turned out quite different than I thought it would.

Great job, FnordChan, I'll surely give some of the mangas I never paid much attention (like Yotsuba) a chance in the near future.

Wish I had found the time to compile a whole list, but GAF's top 10 is surprisingly good. If I had chosen the rest outside of Katsu, I'd have definitely included I"s, Video Girl Ai (both made me cry like a girl), Monster, 20th Century Boys, Hajime no Ippo, Kare Kano, Vagabond, Hikaru no Go and Beck (no particular order). Slam Dunk would probably be #11 for me.

there is a distubing lack of go nagai

he should be right up gaf's alley.
From what I've seen Go Nagai is not very famous on the US. His biggest western fans are from Europe countries like Italy or Spain where they had the Mazinger and/or Devilman show.

Someone really needs to pick up both Getter Robo and Violence Jack manga for translation.

If you think that's something, try watching the third live action Kekko Kamen movie, Kekko Kamen In Love. It relentlessly goes there and is completely awesome. Meanwhile, Go Nagai's sensibilities are probably too old school to really get accepted in the US, more's the pity.

Orion. This beautifully rendered black and white manga is quite a departure from the norm. Its mostly very comedic but there's some great action sequences as well. The story is a little hard to follow because of the setting, which is typical Shirow sci-fi mixed with all sorts of strange tidbits from various Eastern religions, but it all comes together in the end. The characters are fantastic and always entertaining. Pick this one up if you can, you won't be disappointed.

I thought the live action show was supposed to be crap, no sexual innuendo or dirty jokes just a Sailor Moon like show. Was it actually any good?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYOTSUBA!!!!!

(Sad showing for Bleach, which, as so often, is 765 times better than the shitty yet wildly popular anime it spawned.)

Good list, but no Hommunculus anywhere, tsts

At least, not anywhere besides 38th place, a respectable showing for a comic that only had four votes and hasn't had a US release.

All you Maison Ikkoku fans out there be sure to chek out Kimagure Orange Road. Anime and Manga are both good. But if you watch the anime be sure to watch the OVAs and movie too.

OR is actually good, although I don't remember it so much since I read it like 13 years ago. MI is still one of my favourite manga ever, a visual poem
