New Berserk anime (Update: Second movie in Japan - Jun 2012)

I don't know, I think the Evangelion remakes have been worthwhile, even just retelling the original story. I'd definitely like to see the Mazgus arc animated, but a second trip through the Golden Age is better than nothing. I certainly never had high expectations of there ever being another Berserk animation project before this was announced.

I agree wholeheartedly on the Evangelion remakes, so at the end of the day if this ended up just being a worthwhile Golden Age retread then I'd still be pleased, but carrying onwards into what comes after would be really exciting.

Curious to see if the movie will open similar to the manga and first anime with some Black Swordsman vs. acolyte stuff or just start at the beginning.

The beginning of the manga (chronologically just after the eclipse at the end of the golden age) was the best part of Berserk. The thing is the Golden Age arc is the easiest to sell to a mainstream audience. Hence why it's been animated already and why they're doing it again with the movies. I really hope they eventually animate the stuff that happens after the Golden Age.

Since the manga started to have an ensemble cast the manga has been weaker. As much as I really like Schierke, Farnese, Isidro and Serpico I hope Miura kills then all just as he killed the original Hawks and Guts gets even more desperate and paranoid. Losing the berserker armor too would be nice, as I liked when Guts had to struggle to kill a major apostle.

As far as your last point goes
I see no way Guts can compete with how ridiculous his enemies have gotten without it.
His biggest handicap of course being the fact we get five chapters a year.

The latest videos looks waaaay nicer than the first ones (but maybe the just chose better scenes than the other trailers). In fact a lot of scenes looked awesome

Hmmm I think my disappointment in this movies is pretty much gone

So there are three movies...how frequently are they going to be released? It'll be a bit irritating to have to wait three years for them to produce a story line that has already been done reasonably well in a single season of TV.

Even though, from what little I recall from the manga, this story line is one of the more interesting ones, I'd rather have seen them just have it take place after the TV show.

The first one comes out today, the second in June, and third is listed as sometime later in the year.

Perhaps the most disappointing thing about this movie - beyond the fact that they're covering the Golden Age again - is that the actual directing looks fairly good. The camera work looks varied and interesting, there's clearly a skilled person creating laying out how these scenes are going to work.

But man, the CG looks god-awful. It's not just people in armour that looks bad - although undoubtedly they suffer the worst (and for a show where everyone wears armour this is a big problem) - even regular people seem to have really thick, ugly black lines around them in some scenes (but not in others?). It's strangely inconsistent. The horses still look shockingly bad as well and there's real bizarre fast-motion pans (although that might just be youtube).

Poor Zodd looks like the Incredible Hulk from one of the cel-shaded PS2 Hulk games:

Incidentally, I feel like a big Berserk nerd for instantly knowing where this scene comes from based on one shot -

Honestly I am just happy to see it getting made again. CG isnt my preferred thing, but like some other posters said it looks like they have put a lot of work into this. I really hope they get past golden age this time though =) Hell they could catch up with the manga easily since it takes 2 months to get a chapter out of Miura lol.

That's basically the same thing I said in the anime thread. If they kept every shot the same, but actually animated in 2D, it would look really good. I wouldn't even mind if they kept the background soldiers and stuff 3D, but when you have ugly 3D horses and people as the focus of the shot it look really, really bad. That shot you posted was definitely the worst, though.

some of it looks great
but the horseback scenes in particular look like ps2
is square enix the only company in Japan capable of CG?

New video looks great. Sure, there are some awkward CG elements, and Zodd looks bad in all forms. To counter that, there are some very cool looking shots, like the soldier coming to the cracked open door zooming out on the castle, and the rotating camera when Guts is fighting in disguise.

Looking forward to it.

The title sequence shows Schierke, Ishidoro, and the Berserk Armor. I guess that means they intend to take the movies past the Golden Age.

Ehh, saw this on another forum... hope this is not old. It's the first 10 minutes.
Wow, I've been holding out hope but that was severely disappointing. The jump in quality from shot to shot is embarrassing. I get frame count issues on lower-budget 2D animation, but this is a film and it's CG. Did they think that would make it blend better? This entire thing is baffling. Berserk deserves better than this.

I for one love the CG - really brings the manga to life.

Oh youtube comments.

I didn't remember Berserk being a bland LOTR ripoff, but I guess that intro showed me wrong. The CGI looks awful even on that low-quality video. What's sad is there's a few moments of 2D animation and it looks orders of magnitude better.

And the credits sequence is a visual disaster.

I tried to catch this yesterday, but all the trains were suspended because of the crazy snow in West Japan. Did anyone have any luck?

So it seems the movie was released. User on SK.net who've seen it say that the CG looks like a PS2 game, but overall it's a good movie. It seems there isn't that much censored scenes in it and it adapts the material fairly well, keeping the emotion the material had in the original manga. The movie is also atmospheric at times.
There's some things that are cut though. Guts' dream sequence in the tent is the only bits of his childhood we see in the movie, but apparently instead of being a dream it's a short sequence showing him getting raped and all that.

The more I watch things, the less I'm bothered about the CG. I guess it's just what I've come to expect with anime nowadays, and like many people have said more berserk is awesome in itself. Watched the first 10 minutes, thought it was great. Even though the cg was sub-par at best, it was still cool the see a huge raid animated for berserk rather than a slideshow of shade sketching. The opening title sequence with the new Hirasawa was tits.

I don't think I minded the CG. But when they do CG without drawing over the models face it is rather distracting. It is weird how, even from the trailers you can see all these small details that got missed.

I guess it is too much to hope that they touch things up a bit after the films theatrical runs.

does the first movie take it all the way to the eclipse?
Nope, it will be 3 movies leading up to and including the eclipse. I imagine this one will end almost directly after the Zodd encounter.
Edit: actually, no that's not true, I forgot how early on that is, and there is scenes of the assassination in the music video.

I'm a little bummed that they aren't doing the Black Swordsman Arc first.

I really liked seeing that gimps of Guts and then seeing the hell he went through to become that person.

I don't think they could have saved this. BRS only works because it's so stylized, it doesn't work when it's supposed to be gritty and grounded.

I dunno. It might not work as well as it does in BRS TV, but it would still be light years ahead of what the CG here looks.

Btw, here's a CG demo Sanzigen put out *two years ago*: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2oXhYrLvvQ

That shit is way better than anything Studio 4C is doing here. :/

The CG reminds me of Appleseed, but worse. Like, way worse. I wish Japan would outsource CG to the US the way we often outsource our animation to Japan, because they're laughably behind the rest of the world. This comment isn't meant to spark a flurry of good Japanese CG examples, because it does exist, but it is far outweighed by the bad.

Not surprised to see everyone so negative on the first ten minutes still, but I really enjoyed it, janky CG and all. The credits are quite the tease.

At the end of the day, just really happy to be getting more animated Berserk and think that CG will let them do a lot of things the original series certainly didn't. The first ten minutes already put the scale of the battles to shame, so I'll gladly take the good in exchange for the bad (the framerate of the animation is my main gripe, but doesn't bother me as much as most folks here).

the scale is about the only good things its achieved though
the fight between guts and big guy had some seriously wonky animation

It certainly seems like an odd choice, hiring Studio 4C to make a Berserk movie and then having them make it all CGI. Why not hire a studio that's at least done that before, if that's what you want?
