Replaying the game now and it's definitely interesting going through the prologue again. Some things definitely hint at the stuff Tsumugi talks about being true; Kaede and Shuichi do have slightly different personalities (Shuichi is much more panicky, and Kaede is much more impatient and snappy with him), and when the Monokubs introduce themselves Kaede starts to ask several times "Wait if you guys are the Monokubs then-" before getting interrupted, hinting that she indeed does know about Danganronpa and Monokuma.
The biggest mystery to me is how Tsumugi fits into everything. I do think it was the flashback light that gave her her talent, but was she brainwashed into being the mastermind and a pawn of the production staff or was that really something she always planned on? One interesting thing to note is that she's the only character who reacts to the Exisals' first appearance the exact same way both times.
The first Event scene involving Tsumugi, Rantaro and Kaede gave me chills after knowing what would happen later. What's even more chilling is when you talk to Tsumugi to trigger the event, she's standing right outside the girl's bathroom.
So I'm gonna go through the thread to see if this was already answered or theorized, but Rantaro basically was playing again because something similar happened in V2, but the players didn't revolt like Shiuchi did, right? And that's why the Exisals are rebuilding the academy because there was similar destruction at the end of V2? Does this imply that K1-B0 and Tsumugi were also a part of V2? But Tsumugi claims that the V3 gimmick was audience participation, meaning K1-B0 was probably not in V2, so something else happened - maybe a Komaeda-like gambit that resulted in the destruction of the academy.
Since Tsumugi is part of the staff, has she always been a contestant? Or does each game get a new staff member mastermind? If Tsumugi plays multiple games, does she get a new talent each time or is she always a cosplayer? The same talent would get boring for viewers you'd think.
So V2 probably had an endgame of 4 - mastermind + Rantaro + two others, Rantaro chose to sacrifice himself, staff member either went back to behind the scenes or was Tsumugi, Rantaro got Survivor Perk and the two others graduated. I'd really love to see some of the other aired killing games, specifically V2 and how Rantaro made it to the end (and what his first talent was).
Also I really loved the ending for this game, mostly for the fact that I started writing a DR fan story a while back, and I planned on having the Ultimate Detective be the "protagonist" but actually be the first culprit and have someone else take over as the protagonist after his murder (although he wasn't going to be a sympathetic murderer at all). So between the actual plot of this game, Shiuchi wanting to be a Detective so he could be an awesome murderer, and the whole "this is way too meta" comments from the audience, I was having a ball by the end.

I assume Tsumugi was in a lot of them and since she's a cosplayer, she probably has a different look in each one from my own canon of her explanation. Seriously, it's a fucked up world where watching people get murdered on TV is considered fun entertainment.
I enjoyed how crazy and meta it went. I just hope they can continue the main story from DR1/2 in another installment. The war between the FF and Remnants was always intriguing to me. I assume they would need to change up the formula cuz it's impossible to keep this whole Monokuma/prison school/class trial thing ongoing without coming up with a really outrageous reason with the current canon. I guess just continue them as an anime if possible instead of a game.
This is gonna sound like an odd question but I take it people really do die in DanganRonpa in this universe, right? So 16 go in until 1 or 2 people survive then it's off to another DR.

Considering hope always wins in this universe, it's never just 1 that survives. Tsumugi does repeatedly mention that their bodies are real.
Or maybe they just have adjusted the rules over time to force the 2 person rule for better ratings. The survivor perk doesn't seem like something that would be in every Danganronpa.

What does graduation/winning entail in the Team Danganronpa reality shows? Tsumugi/Monokuma states that the characters have no place in the real world and there's no way to undo the implanted memories. (Presumably the "applicants" are aware of this, too, having watched previous seasons, so they're all suicidal? That is, of course, if they're willing applicants in the first place.)

I'm fairly confident that the "audition" tapes that were shown were faked. The prologue has the characters remembering that they were kidnapped against their will, and this was before any Flashback Light was projected onto them.
Shuichi made a good point saying that even if such a killing game is popular around the world, no one would actually want to participate in it.

Are there any special game overs during the last trial, like if you decide to vote or if you say yes to the "save this situation" prompt? I'm guessing you just get the generic one though.

Shuichi just has a couple of internal monologue lines saying that, in the end, he was too much of a coward to not vote for someone, and the game then prompts you to go back.
Just beat the game and I have to say that I think V3 has the best cast of characters out of the 3 games. The only ones I wasn't a fan of were Tsumugi and Kiyo,I actually had a feeling Tsumugi would be the mastermind because she made it so far with one of the least amounts of character development so that was the only reason I could see she was kept around. On the other hand, Maki, Himiko, Kaito and Gonta were all delightful. Kokichi made a great loose cannon character and the Monokubs were good additions.
Possibly had the best deaths too but I must admit I'm struggling to recall all the details of the ones from the earlier games. Think the game did a great job of foreshadowing and throwing in curve balls and intrigue into the cases. There wasn't a time I felt like I knew exactly who did what and was just trying to get through the trials quickly, it really did take piecing it together most of the time. Favourite was Miu's case, really felt for Gonta during the trial too.
1. I loved Kaede, so the bait and switch really hurt. Put me in the category of "Kaede would have been better".
They killed my waifu!
When I saw her talent I thought "huh, what an utterly useless talent for a Danganronpa protagonist but it's different, let me roll with it".
2. I actually thought Shuichi was the culprit of case 1 because I thought that the Monokubs weren't under any particular obligation to give you the photos in the exact order they were taken, and thus the photos of him removing the cameras were actually photos of him SETTING the cameras, thus giving him the chance to go in and kill Rantaro while screwing with the timeline. I was wrong.
3. I did think at the time of the "reveal" for case 1 though that it was awfully convenient that Rantaro put his head in just the right spot, and Kaede put her ball in the vent at just the right time as well. Looking back, I guess I was too used to stuff like that working for hax characters like Nagito.
4. It was clear mindwiping was happening in the beginning and for a moment I wondered if they were truly not ultimates and were just brainwashed, but then I figured their memories as ultimates were just removed, and then later Tsumugi lies made me think that theory was correct. Contradicting my post a bit earlier, I think now that they had those talents, or at least the aptitude for them, and where brainwashed into thinking they were ultimates. You can't fake skills like Angie's or Miu's ... but then it was noted over and over again that whatever martial arts Tenko was using didn't have anything to do with aikido.
4a. Looking back, Kirumi made a comment about an audience watching back in case 2 that made me wonder.
5. I would've kept Angie alive and had her cult go head to head with Kokichi, with Shuichi, and Kaito caught in the crossfire at least a little longer.
5a. Though having Kiyo survive as a killer who got away with it during the Kokichi arcs would have been fun too.
6. Kokichi was awesome. Like the game said, pure malice. For the 2nd biggest liar in the game/series he played the antagonist role so well. For a moment I was actually almost convinced he was the mastermind. But I knew something was wrong when they brought in the DR1/DR2 "backstory" and Kokichi (and Kaito) didn't seem to know anything about Remnants of Despair or Junko Enoshima. And you never really, truly know what he knew.
7. The Necronomicon. How would that have worked if someone had used it? It was why I thought Rantaro might come back before it was over.
And was hoping Kaede would
. Tsumugi and Team Danganronpa had to have known someone would try it - if it hadn't been tried in previous games before.
8. Kaede's twin sister I guess was a dropped plot thread of Tsumugi's but it made me think about the Necronomicon and wonder if they would recycle Kaede that way, or if we saw a twin switch and she was the mastermind.
9. How much was real or lies? I'm pretty sure the audition scenes were faked. I don't know if we know what Tsumugi actually looked like. I'll need to play the prolog again but I'm guessing their names weren't changed since they had the same names in the beginning.
10. I still don't know how Keebo existed. He was a normal kid in the prologue. Why would they turn him into a robot capable of overturning their entire game? I get the inner voice thing to give audience paticipation, but why the firepower?
11. The one provable volunteer is Tsumugi. Sure she was the mastermind, but even still, how does she keep herself from getting knocked off by someone like Kiyo? Is the brainwashing that strong to where as they plot they just conveniently ignore the Ultimate Cosplayer (who you'd think would be easy pickings).
12. IF there's another Danganronpa, they'd need radical concept changes. Perhaps even branching paths. V3 was the last they coudl possibly do in the current style.
Thinking about it, is the reason that the flashback memory got the memory of Hope's Peak academy scouting students rather than allowing students to apply because the group applied to the killing game? Like did they mix up some real memories there?
That would explain that. At the same time it wouldn't explain why their memory of Junko Enoshima being the only ultimate despair got mixed up.
Going by the way people reacted to this ending and how controversial it was I figured it'd be some meta thing that ends in the complete eradication of the universe and there being no chance at another game ever.
I just didn't expect it to go so FAR and INSANE with it. Feels like Kodaka decided to one up Yoko Taro or Kojima and just end meta commentary by capping it out like this because there's no way you can go further.
Of all the final case rides this one is by far the craziest, might be the craziest ending in gaming.
I'm mostly surprised they got 30+ voice actors back and that the villain was the entire series. Like holy shit.
Kodaka mentions in the artbook for the game that the VA budget got way out of hand because of the ending, lol. And he wanted to go further and have the DR3 anime characters show up too!

I have to say I was baited extremely hard by Himiko. I had her pegged As the most born to die character of all time. Should have seen that reverse psychology coming

The voice direction in this game is really hit and miss. Monokuma switches between normal and high pitched constantly (in a misguided attempt to match the OG Japanese version's vibe?). I don't even want to talk about what happened to Hajime.

I would totally take compromised roles if it meant each of the V3 characters being voiced by new people.

Yeah, I'm really glad Brian Beacock didn't stick with the higher-pitched voice that Monokuma started out with. I guess he was just trying to get back into the swing of voicing that character, because I feel like he returns to using his "normal" voice for Monokuma by Chapter 3 or something.

Yeah, why was Hajime so high pitched again? Did JYB voice anyone else in the game making him differentiate Hinata with a high voice? Kinda how he did in P4AU.

I thought I saw some people say he voiced Rantaro. Kinda sounded like him a little when you find the video on the laptop, but I don't know if it was ever confirmed.
There's a possibility that that line was recorded early, because it seems that the game ends up with him voicing Monokuma in his usual, slightly lower-pitched style more often than not, all things considered; still, like you said, it can be pretty inconsistent, but I love Beacock's portrayal of Monokuma, so I ended up being fine with it. Really wasn't feeling that Mickey Mouse-esque voice direction, though.

I think I had the exact opposite reaction. I didn't get the controversy because I found the ending to actually be pretty mild and even predictable. None of it was particularly biting and as a commentary it didn't really have much impact. It was neat, but it didn't go far enough.

Did anyone else have trouble with the last argument armament in the finale? I was playing on mean so I had a terrible time with it even though I thought it was a pretty cool idea. A.A. has reached near hangmans gambit levels of bad for me.

Has anyone ever claimed the commentary was controversial though? The commentary was really the least notable part of chapter 6, even if the story was pushing for it.

Do what I do. Play mean logic difficulty, easy action difficulty. You get the stupid minigames, literally the worst part of all the Danganronpa games, out of the way, while retaining difficulty for the part that matters.
Bit disappointed with how they left the characters themselves. I'm not sure if we actually got to know them or pre-written plotlines that just went on with the show.
Finished the game. I did wish they flipped the 2 Mc roles lol. Tires of meek male leads in this series haha.
Ending was fine, but it does kinda prevent them from half assing the next one. You can only do this meta ending thing once!
It does kinda kill my mood of lvling up all bonds in post game though.
Bigger problem I have is more technical stuff. I know the transitions are stylish but are way too long for a game on ps4p. Also there is that half second freeze when you talk to someone is surprisingly irritating!
In the end there isn't much to really discuss lol. I can't think of any real open questions that the game doesn't explicitly address in some way.
I'm curious about the actual game show. It does seem like there is a hefty cash prize at least. I do like how their audition stuff is just creepy fanboys.
