Do we have an expected release time frame? The screens look like something that's not ready for public eyes yet.

Eh, for a mobile phone game, which are inherently more suited for time wasting and general* idleness, this isn't so bad. I mean, maybe there are ways it could be better, but at a certain point, you might as well play your 3DS if you want something more substantial. It is pretty much exactly like that one game--I can't remember the name exactly, started with an "I." I think it was the first kind of this game. Either way, I think the idea sounds cool. Maybe more opportunities to battle others nearby or train your pokemon would have been cool.

Edit: INGRESS! That's the name.

Sounds like a Pokemon-themed version of Ingress. Not sure if want.

What I thought, too. Right now this sounds like they took Ingress and slapped Pokemon on it.

I need actual battles against players and battling against Pokemon to catch them to even make this worth installing on my phone. How are they gonna justify, lore wise, about being able to catch Pokemon immediately without weakening them? Are we all just extremely lucky trainers? Have we been banned from battling due to some Pokemon law?

I'm just guessing by all the screenshots. We have yet to see a Pokemon outside of Gen I.

If this takes off they way they want it to I could see them having an annual event of some sorts in which they announce "Pokémon GO Season X" with new Pokémon.

If you really care about the lore of this then don't install it.

I wonder. Will they charge for this, or will they have some pay-to-whatever hooks in it? I'm assuming it'll be free, but you pay for extra/better pokeballs.

I'm 100% sure it'll be F2P. They could use in game advertising and your regular freemium model. I'm sure better pokeballs will cost money (or if they want to go down that route even the pokeballs themselves could cost money, like you get 5 balls a day and have to pay if you want to catch more Pokémon) and items such as a spray that would attract more Pokémon for the next x amount of time. Stuff like that.

I'd be very surprised if both of these aren't in the game. They may have simplified the catching process for standard wild Pokémon, but we do see Trainers weakening Mewtwo before catching it in the initial trailer. Maybe it's only possible for rare or high-level Pokémon.

I'm surprised Trainer-versus-Trainer battles aren't mentioned on the press release, but honestly, I think they are a lock, even if they aren't like in the core games.

Damn. Got my hopes up for a real battling/leveling system. If the closest thing to combat is leaving your pokemon at a gym to passively defend it, I'm gonna get bored fast.

Battles against wild Pokémon is not in it. We know that :/

It's like when this was announced no one read info about it and thought it would be a normal Pokemon game on mobile or something. Imo people set there own expectations that we knew wouldn't happen. I'm ok with a Pokemon ingress because that's what they pretty much said it was at the beginning. If you aren't into that it's ok but if you expected anything else you have yourself to blame.

Free-to-play but you can purchase items.

Okay, so it's confirmed then? Thanks. I'm gathering info for a blog post.

It seems to be that way for standard wild Pokémon, but we don't know how they'll handle cases like Mewtwo. The video suggested a form of battle before players manage to catch it. Though I do agree that even for standard 'mons the lack of weakening-before-catching is a bit awkward, much like their mechanic for evolution. They're altering mechanics that are staple for the series, and they haven't communicated what their approach to "training" is, if not wild Pokémon battles.

Yeah, sounds like Pokémon Ingress alright.

If you thought they were chucking Pokémon's battle system into a Western-developed F2P mobile spinoff, you were daft.

Yup. It's Ingress with Pokemon. How is anyone shocked or disappointed by this by now? Ever since it's been announced they've described it exactly like they describe Ingress.

Hell, I bet the Wild Pokemon will just be where Ingress portals are that aren't "big" enough to be Gyms are right now.

I actually don't really understand why people would want this so bad. Do you want to stand 5-10 minutes in the middle of a field looking at your phone trying to catch a Pokémon? Do you want to do that in the city next to the super market?

People watched the trailer and didn't bother checking how the app has always been described in terms of features.

I really hope they don't implement a street pass like feature. What I mean by that is have more concentrations of Pokemon in populated areas.

That stuff is great for Japan and people in cities, but not in Bumblefuck, USA.

Well... It certainly is what it is. Seems like a game that will get a lot of press initially and then sort of just drop off as people forget about it, like the TCG games on PC and iPad.

I wasn't expecting the Pokémon battle system.

I was expecting A battle system.

Wait so you don't even get to battle anything?? Wow...
Basically like a superbowl quality commercial for a tamogachi like app that encourages you to exercise. Oh well. :/

We have Pokemon Sun and Moon to look forward to still I guess.

Do we know this for sure? Or are they just showing off Gen I Pokemon as examples?
It makes sense. The only way to get people go back to locations they have already gone is to bring pokemons in generations. If every single pokemon were available from the beginning, you might go to the mountains, catch them all, and never return. They might even be sold as expansion packs.

Also, they mentioned you can battle in gyms, probably those gyms will be in "safe" places like in parks with big monuments and lots of people around. You wouldn't want to battle in a dark alley at night.

And talking about night, I wonder if, considering the main target of pokemon games, they will place hourly restrictions (like making pokemon appear much more often during daylight, to prevent encouraging children and teens to go out at night).

Finally, if you have never played a GPS-driven game, consider getting a battery pack (as virtually every Ingress player has) or testing a few of those games in advance. I've seen phones dying in 45 minutes. Mine (Note 5) lasts around 5 and a half hours, but the more it has to battle with location and signal issues (areas with bad reception, areas where connection keeps switching between E, H/H+, 4G, etc, areas between big buildings or buildings with mostly glass on their surfaces, etc) the least the battery will last.

I would find this surprising if I wasn't already sure that the announcement footage was nothing like what we could realistically expect.

Yes, you do get to battle. 100% guarantee.

Mr. Masuda: Thank you, John! I'm Junichi Masuda from GAME FREAK, where I work as a game director.

I've joined this project to help with the setting, game design, and music. The day has finally come for Pokémon to make their appearance on Earth! Pokémon live in all manner of places around the world. Players will search for them, catch them with Poké Balls and use them to battle each other. We're making a game that has depth within its simplicity, and hope it will be a game that's enjoyable by players of a wide range of ages. In my mind, Pokémon are mysterious creatures that aren't like pets, but are closer to humans and can be our friends. What kind of powers might these Pokémon have? Where would they live? I'm hard at work alongside Niantic to bring out the untapped possibilities of Pokémon, and in order to do so, we're not limiting ourselves to adhering to the traditional conventions of Pokémon.

SMH guys, put some trust that TPC knows what they're doing. :p

And that phrase can be used to describe the gyms. Niantic's site says this
Yes, there will be battles. Players will be encouraged to join one of three teams in order to compete over the ownership and prestige of Gyms. They will do this by placing their captured Pokémon in a friendly Gym or by battling with an opponent’s Pokémon in another team’s Gym. Gyms - just like PokéStops - are also found at real world locations.

I believe if there was actual player to player battling, they would have said so.

Trades aren't mentioned either. They may not be ready to show some of the mechanics, but I'm sure they have an approach to each element of the 'catch, trade, battle' formula. Nothing suggests that Gym Battles are automatic either. I'm sure there is a battle system that can be scaled to PvP as well. It's likely going to be simplistic, but it'll be there.

I really hope you're right, because everything about this game from what we know so far is missing the mark of what Pokémon is about.

if they keep updating and adding features, I reckon this will probably be incredible in 2-3 years after launch. The first year will essentially be a public beta test. I have a feeling the game will be shit for those that live in the provinces, can't wait to see how they space and distribute stuff in London. Hipster pokemon in East London?
