New DriveClub gameplay videos (IGN)

Wow.

Wooooooow. That was insanely boring, and honestly, not that pretty.

Because dynamic lighting is so cheap...

I just think if the lighting model is effecting this games performance so much then they should change it. I don't think the car models or looks, look that much better than need for Speed rivals. It looks OK I guess but not anything too special. Not getting the hype for this at all. Me and my friends were amped for it as a launch game. Not looking too hot new tho. It looks nothing special gameplay wise. If people just want to pervy on some headlights reflecting off bumpers, then cool I guess?

You're clearly not looking at the right things if you think that.

This is leaps above NFS Rivals. The only thing Rivals has on this is weather and a neat water beading effect on the cars.

The audio engine as well as the chase camera tech needs to be sent over to Polyphony. Game looks gorgeous and will satisfy the PGR itch I'm having right now. Can't wait for the HQ vids on Monday.

HOW FAST DO YA WANNA GO??

So sick of hearing that. The game is incredibly impressive looking. Lighting, environments, and track/car detail all look excellent. That being said I'm not sold on the sound yet and some of the driving looked a bit odd, but otherwise looks like a great game to play while relaxing and listening to music or something.

Somehow, the more i think about it the more i realize that this game has no hook. It's not a sim, it has no burnout like crashes, no police chases no muddy hectic motor storm craziness... I don't even know five other people/friends that have ps4s so the whole club aspect is lost on me.

I really hoped the new vids would hype me up somewhat.

Terrible quality videos so you miss a lot of the details that we've seen before but there's no mistaking the quality of the lighting they're using even in videos that are that poor. looking forward to see the better quality videos on Monday though.

Terrible race music though which seems pretty standard for every game that isn't Wipeout. I usually get rid of race music though and just use it for replays.

I think mundane is the right word to describe the game for now. The game could be awesome and actually driving could feel great, but for me that's not coming across in the footage they've released. Rushy is a cool dude and visually the game looks pretty, but these vids aren't doing it for me. The other two vids explaining the systems in the game are just terrible. Why use those low-rent flash animations instead of footage from the dynamic menu and actual racing challenges and whatnot? It's baffling.

Same here. Driveclub will always remind me that we got it instead of the cancelled WipEout, which I would have rather taken, or any real arcade racer for the matter, like another MotorStorm. It just seems so bland, especially for a person who doesn't like to play the more realistic kind of racing games.

They are trying to make the whole social aspect the big hook, but right now I'm not seeing anything that justifies that. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm mesmerised by the road surface+motion blur and reflections in that GT gif. I like how the alloys stand out and reflect the light too.

The super gorgeous environments have always been the hook for me. Sims provide you with racing circuits which are mostly sterile affairs, and maybe a tiny selection of fantasy tracks in beautiful locations. You get better locales in arcade racers, but the handling model is usually incredibly superficial. There's not much nuance to learn over time, nor enough personality to the individual cars - not in comparison to those sims.

DriveClub locations remind me more of Top Gear segments or fantasy stuff out of car commercials. And with the lighting and atmospherics the overall effect is remarkable. And their hybrid driving model could really make it all come together, depending upon how they've tuned it.

I know social features are the other bullet point, but since the advent of AutoLog/Rivals and even Drivatars just about every racing game is filled with the stuff. So on that point I haven't seen what makes DriveClub unique.

EDIT: Holy god damn at those GIFs. I said god damn.

Looks good, but not amazing. I'll wait for better quality version which hasn't come from youtube to properly assess its visuals.

Why exactly does a racing game have to have a "hook"? Why can't it just be a game with really solid racing mechanics? That's what made Sega Rally great. It's what made Ridge Racer great. It's what made Daytona great. They didn't have a gimmick. They were just great racing games with great driving mechanics that made you want to keep playing and beat times. They didn't have cutscenes where your car got totaled. They didn't have slowmo shots of your car barely missing a collision, or the ability to activate random powerups as you raced.

In fact, when was the last time a racer with a "hook" actually did well that wasn't named Need for Speed? Split/Second tanked. Blur tanked. Later Motorstorm games tanked. And on and on. Maybe what racing fans really want is just a simple racing game that's built around great driving mechanics instead of the latest gimmick to try to bring in people that seemingly don't like racing games to begin with?

If this is true, not only is my hype deflating for Driveclub, i would actually grow to hate on the game with furious passion :O

Sega Rallys hook was full on arcade racing/drifting against the clock, Daytonas was high speed over the top racing (against the clock) and ridgeracer's was gas to the metal sideways driving (also against the clock). All hooks to me, i have yet to see the hook of drive club outside of some poorly flash animated cartoons.

But you may be right and i just don't see what DC has to offer, because it just don't get the premise of the game. Right now it feels like a directionless Kickstarter project to me.

p.s.: I loved Sega Rally 2.

This is the draw for me.
Just as they said in the reveal. Exotic cars in exotic locations. Crank the details in the atmosphere and environment, and you've got one hell of a racing game for me. I used to love watching touring car races on EuroSport when I lived in Germany. This scratches a serious itch.
No, not that kind of serious itch...

The reflective floor under the Zonda R's engine looks stupid, you might as well disable reflections from that area because they'll never make sense.

I mean, that WipEout got cancelled, Studio Liverpool closed, and to my knowledge partly integrated to Evolution. How I wish it would have been vice versa, but that's off-topic. I just dont think there's room for two racers along the mighty GT.

I think it looks jaw- dropping. The car models, lighting engine, and track details are unrivaled by any other racer I've seen (except maaaybe the car models are equaled by Project Cars).

I'm sure it will only look better by release. The only issues I've noticed are so-so reflections (okay, just not perfect) and some aliasing issues (which may just be the quality of the video). I can take the reflections because you only really notice that they are so-so in one camera angle (hood). I just hope the aliasing is cleaned up and then I'm 100% good regarding the game's visuals.

I doubt there will be any Mustangs, but I hope the new Focus ST is one of the hot hatches that make the car cut (I'm a Ford guy)!

Shiny!

Maybe this'll be the racing game that forces me to use cockpit mode. I tend to use bumper cam, but in GT I found the dashboards to be a bit invasive. But it looks so nice...

On that note, Logitech Wheels for PS3 don't work on PS4 yet, do they? Driving Force GT in particular.

I love how aggressive the racing looks. Something you couldn't see from previous footage. It's not some pedestrian sunday drive, or boring "legal lap times" racer. it looks like every opponent is thrashing their car. Reminds me of motorstorm in that respect. And for that alone i'll probably pick it up (may as well try the PS+ version first though)

i hope there are plenty of point to point races, it's the reason i love rally so much, you get the excitement of a race, without the repetition of a looped track.

Rewatching the vids, with sound this time, I'm not that impressed by the sounds of the cars. Oh well, can't have everything I guess.
