New Fear Effect announced (Kickstarter/dev:Sushee/SE approved/like Shadowrun Returns)

I'm fine with the genre change. Looks like it might be almost Invisible Inc-ish with the photos since it looks like stealth is a factor. I'd have loved a traditional story campaign in Invisible Inc.

YESSSSSSSS

Oh no, is something bad? Something's bad isn't it.

Uh... yeah, they kind of were. Tons of Chinese mythological conflict. I LOVE the first game.

Lol great GIF, the guy just grittig his teeth as he is hit is awesome.

I'm not super excited about this being a fear effect game but if it results in the originals finally getting a US PSN release then it will be worth it a thousand times over. So crazy that they released them in Europe and then nothing over here. Those games are fantastic and deserve better.

SE Collective has had a good track record with supporting promising game and successful Kickstarters, so I'm down for this

Seems like a bad idea to launch your Kickstarter 5 days after you announce it.

If it's on 4 discs, I'm in.
Happens all the time. Most Kickstarters get announced weeks before launching.

Like the art style but unfortunately the isometric turn-based gameplay isn't doing it for me as is... guess I'll keep an eye on it and see if it gets funded.

Yeah, they're just using the Fear Effect name. It's an isometric strategy game, and from the pics, it seems not to touch on FE's old themes (gore, scary stuff, dark magic). Loved FE and FEII (to a lesser degree), but I'm not supporting this. It's gonna bomb.

Fear Effect 1 and 2 were both amazing. I was so excited about this announcement until I read further. Isometric? That's some bullshit, right there.

This is Fear Effect.

Original - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2-jDpocK4R4
Retro Helix - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iqo9RA9Fzn0
Inferno - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aTHKXjePz-0

Wish it would have just been an Inferno remake, as that got cancelled before release. Damnit.

LOL did they actually have the trailer use Linkin Park music for Inferno or was that something the fan added?

"Eidos sexualised the relationship between Hana and Rain while marketing Fear Effect 2. Sushee promised to avoid doing the same for Fear Effect Sedna."

Oh man, I feel so sorry for game developers... Their fear to 'offend' gamers is real, today. Such an unfortunate era.

They could tone it down and still keep them as a couple. I think that'd be cool.

I'm curious how they're gonna get newer players on board. I've never actually played Fear Effect but always wanted too.

Guys, what if this is better than the previous games?

Why? Aren't they a couple? (I've never played the games) Or was it a case of the game being too pandering?

Yes they are a couple but it was a case of the marketing being too sexualized.

I'm thrilled. The games are fun with choices built inside the game very well. I rebought Retro Helix. I hope they make it a bit edgy or dark in some ways. They have a good opportunity to bring back a style that seems to have disappeared and not the whole "sexual exploitive" thing. I mean the dark tones with interesting dialogue. They need to get these games on NA PSN.

What's with the complaints of 2016? How can you say you want a hipster game all the time? That's not where it needs to go. It needs to have a more grounded character. Just saying.

Grounded and rigged isn't teenagers and hipster stuff.

I was gonna impulse-reply 'toning down what, exactly? Did you ever play the g...', and then I read the rest of your post. :D

Seriously, there was one single scene, IIRC - kinda appropriate to the context as well, to be honest - and it was pretty much harmless too. I don't know if the game had particularly raunchy ads, or if Eidos pushed it too far with the marketing, back then, but these guys stating they won't refer to that element in their game - even before sharing way more substantial details - sounds like a witch hunt way out of proportion.

So this is basically some guys wanting to do a isometric turn strategy game and just using the cheaper sort of known IP to get them a boost in recognition? Pass.

God dammit.

Hearing that there was a KS going on for Fear Effect had me jumping in hype.

Hearing that it's a ten person team, focusing on isometric gameplay kind of kills it.

I'll back, but be sad.

All I know was the advertising which was just posted. It was heavy on the two. Maybe they just mean they aren't doing that.

They sound pretty faithful to the material. Even have the original writer on board.

I've played the first one and I thought it was archaic, albeit very charming. I think, even as a smaller developer, they could have simply updated the mechanics. By the way, the original was not merely an action adventure, but rather a mix between a point and click adventure and a survival horror. All it really needed was a better control scheme and possibly more camera options.

In the crowd that wishes this was a third-person action-horror game rather than an isometric RPG.

If it releases, I'll buy it, but his isn't my most desirable outcome.

Am I the only one who was terribly disappointed by Fear Effect?

It looked the part but the gameplay was almost Dragons Lair levels of frustrating. I remember getting to the second area and thinking "fuck this".

Well, that was admittedly pretty stupid - I was aware of the controversy, at the time, yet I've never seen that ad on Italian magazines - and I realize something similar would make YouTube melt at least for a couple of weeks, today, but still... Different times, I guess.

That's just an ad though, that's not in the game. Only sexy interaction between the two is the pretty innocuous elevator scene IIRC. There's not really much to tone down.

Guess it was Eidos's thing back in the day.

Oh man, I used to love 90's adverts like that in British gaming magazines. Those were the days.

I love the look of this. They're inspired by Hairbrained Schemes and Shadowrun so I can totally see a game like that but using Fear Effect characters and locations. Should be pretty cool if they can pull it off.

OK I'm kind of sad now it will be like Shadowrun Returns.

Not that I don't like that type of game, but just saying. Was hoping we could get some RE-like magic from this just like with RE remakes coming.

These games were SO GOOD, at least the first one. It was quite brilliant. I don't remember the second one too much other than the lesbian stuff.

Scrolling this thread at work is already dangerous...

The end game is insane. There's a reason FE2 is a prequel,
damn near everyone dies.

Well never really tried these games and I'd pretty much only be interested if it meant a release of the originals so I could get into it.

Still the best and most creepy depiction of
hell
in a video game ever. Whoever designed those environments was a twisted genius.

Id also add creepiest brothel, creepiest swamp village and creepiest downtown Hong Kong ever in a videogame. All the environments in the game are unsettling as fuck.

Not digging the teaser video but will certainly watch the project as it goes through it's cycle. I think they are going to have a very hard time hitting their goals for this one though.

I'm curious about the age of the people here who remember playing the games. I was a teenager when I played 'em so I think I was probably the demo they were aiming for. That's plain to see with the marketing it had at the time.

Yeah, you're pretty much right there. The last area stands out for me, but the whole game beyond cyberpunk Hong Kong is creepy as anything. Such a unique atmosphere the game had.
