New FFXV battle system footage and details, playable characters clarified

In regard to the story and its once promised mature/darker tone, in the Versus days Nomura said this darker story was possible because it wasn't a mainline entry...now it's a mainline entry and that has me worried.

Tabata has personally said that they're not touching the story and the mood of the game. The only thing Tabata is changing is the game mechanics and stuff.

You should not worry.

If we believe the supposition that the only reason it's rebranded XV is because XVI is too early into development, then there's no need to worry.

Because that means SE is desperate.

That bullet disintegrating when it hits the sword barrier feels awesome :D

Nice catch. The weapon barrier is probably part of Noctis's techniques which is customizable to add more offense/defense/utility advantages.

I hope they tone down the effects on the spinning weapons though. It's a little too distracting right now.

Is it worth making a battle system thread with gifs? Coz if you guys didn't see this before, then others are likely in the same boat.

In what way ? Is it too close ?

yes, when theres multiple enemies on screen, its always too close, thats fine when its a single enemy, but when theres a cople of them the camera shouldnt be that close, only panning out when attacking behemoth, which i like since hes a large enemy

Maybe GAF can collect a wishlist for FFXV and pass on to Kagari if she can deliver to Tabata directly in an interview? lol

+ Switching party leader
+ Switching weapons mid-battle
+ Button presses rather than holding
+ Kingdom Hearts combat interface
+ Female character(s) in party
+ Confirm controllable airships
+ Return current Stella/Luna to OG Versus XIII Stella
+ Confirm darker/more mature story based on Versus XIII
+ Destructible environment
+ Red Blood
+ Release Date
Let's be honest. If you want the thing at the very bottom of the list not to be three years later, you need to strike out pretty much all of the above.

The Phantom Sword effects are temporary at the moment. I am sure it will look better in the final version.

I hope the implement that blue/greenish effect that comes with the phantom sword from the early CG trailer and E3 2013 cinematic trailer

Yebis in all its glory eh? I am sure they'll polish it up in the end. Personally tho, I don't even notice things like that in fast combat.

I want those phantom swords to move fater, they're quite slow compared to early CGI trailers.

But damn, i can't stop thinking about this game everyday. Of course i need constant stream of informations and a demo, otherwise i'll go nuts.

The most recent trailer finally revealed two new music tracks, one of which has become very popular (The second track that starts playing during the footage of the ships flying over Accordo).

What kind of situation do you guys think this track will play in? To me, it sounds like it will be a town/city theme.

The reason the swords seem distracting is because they have too big of a radius from Noct, slightly blocking the camera. Bring those bad boys in a little tighter and it should be fine.

The fact that it was suddenly recorded by the VGO, two weeks before the trailer, leads me to believe it's just a trailer theme.

The way the prelude cuts in is suspect, too. Doesn't sound like something from a game.

What are the differences between current Stella/Luna and OG Versus XIII Stella?

I hope they get rid of this damsel in distress BS if it is in the game at all.

uh, OST work is pretty much left for the last months of development, and why would they have yoko make original pieces just for a trailer

Uhh I hope not.

It doesn't sound like a town theme to me. More of a cutscene theme or even menu theme with the FF prelude at the end.

Because there's actually a lot of music that gets used for just trailers.
And you don't think Shimomura's made some progress over the last 8 years? :P

Here's an example, Fate of the Unknown, from 2007, which was merely reduced to leitmotifs in BBS at 2010.

she definetly has most if not all of the compositions made, but they dont record this stuff for games now, except maybe the pieces that'll be present in the demo, most of the work is left for the end, and did SE ever not use music that where in their trailers

both themes will probably still be used in the game, just not in the same capacity as in the trailer

that piece was still used in the secret ending of KH2 FM, and even if it was reduced to leitmotifs in BBS, it was still used

OMNIS LACRIMA was used in a 2008 trailer, and now we're seeing its use finally in 2014.
And I posted that example with Fate of the Unknown earlier, so really, it depends.

Point is, yes they do for select tracks. I can post way to many examples for trailer-specfic music, but that would require too much effort. :P

Because this same tired complaint of people wanting to stop any discussion they deem as negative because "you haven't played it," is really annoying.

p r e a c h

I'm so sick of people trying to shut down discussion in a forum, a place built upon just that.

Definition lesson y'all:

1. a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

Everyone on the development team thoroughly looked into an Active Cross Battle system that made free use of attack, guard, and co-op functions, but as a result they arrived at the conclusion that changing characters would be too difficult. In order to create a new and interesting battle system, we ended up not being able to put in the character switching.

Hahaha so they decided that a potentially fantastic combat (that would be basically classic FF combat in real time instead of turns, something a lot of people wanted to see since the first games) would be too difficult so you turned it into a dumbed down automatic KH with only one playable character which has nothing to do with previous FF combat and can be played holding down buttons. Ok geniouses. Count me definitely out.

What a wasted opportunity. We have the first candidate for "most dissapointing downgrade of the generation".

ok lets put it another way, from FF mainline games trailers, has there been a piece of music thats been completely removed from said game, i dont want you give me examples from random games from unrelated series, just SE stuff and preferably FF related

Nomura has never really elaborated on what her role is in the story beyond some extremely vague info that doesn't really give us much insight to her part in the story or her motives and trailers just leave us more confused. At one point she's talking to Noctis in a friendly way at a party like she doesn't know him, the next she's (seemingly somewhat reluctantly) preparing to fight Noctis, then we see her (presumably) and Noctis together as children. Is she a friend or foe or perhaps somewhere in between, for some reason? How much of what we've seen in the past (for example, the party scene) has been completely scrapped or is it still all completely intact?

And where are you getting the damsel in distress stuff? She seems to have asked Noctis to come to Altissia because she has something for him. She seems to have a very determined look on her face in the last moments of her appearane in the TGS trailer that doesn't seem the kind of expression you'd expect from someone who is waiting for someone to come to rescue her. I get the impression it could be a trap, but who knows with what little they've shown of her post E3 2013. At least Nomura didn''t ever talk about her as if she was a helpless princess, so I doubt she has been made into one if he's following Nomura's story premise etc. as closely as he has claimed.

Sounds maybe a little too dramatic for a Shimomura town theme. Either it's a combat theme at some specific place or point in the game or maybe some cutscene/event BGM in some dramatic, action filled moment in the game.

The fact that it was suddenly recorded by the VGO, two weeks before the trailer, leads me to believe it's just a trailer theme.

That is obviously just some arrangement/mix made for the trailer, so yeah, it's probably not going to end up in the game in the trailer form, but I'm sure we'll hear some kind of arrangement at some point or the other in the game. It could just be that Shimomura is not finished with the OST, Tabata heard some demo/earlier version of this piece and wanted to put it in a new trailer and they had to record something in a hurry

They changed it because they thought it WASN'T fantastic. Having to control a character like Noctis and then add the necessity of switching characters constantly just wasn't working well. It would probably simply be way too disorientating & chaotic if you had a character that plays like what we saw of Noctis a few days ago and if you jumped to god knows where with the press of a button. And it's far from automatic, at least try to understand the basics of the system before bitching about it.

People should stop, then, jumping to conclussions or at least read the thread. The whole "press X for awesome" argument is pointless right now with the new batch of info.

Listen from 2:07

As I said, the music there was reduced to leitmotifs in the actual game. You can hear the same motifs in Miracles from the Final Fantasy XIII OST.

Just like how parts of Fate of the Unknown was still in BBS.

Removing changing characters is disappointing, but the game isnt really automatic, yes theres the press button for auto combo, and while i do hope we'll be able to input these moves ourselves, those are just the basics of basic, theres directional input + Attack moves in this as well, not just hold X/A to awesome, theres a special moves button and the guard stuff has a drawback and cant be continuasly pressed, its also not the only way to use it, or a get out of jail free button either, we also have no idea how magic and summons can be used, the only thing we know is that magic is affected by weather

Sorry to butt in.

FFvXIII/XV's development cycle is quite atypical so I would throw out all your presumptions/expectations that are based on any other game, Square Enix or not.
