Can any of you with tech knowledge comment on the Luminous completion percentage?

They said its at version 1.4 which is 80% and by March it will be 1.5/100% complete.

What does this mean for the games development? Is it seriously holding them back from pushing through with development? Or is this type of scenario normal with big projects?

Really want a Holiday XV release but if the Engine isn't even finalized til Spring then it seems like it would be hard for them.

I am going to play the shit out of this. Everything looks very nice and impressive.

I felt similarly impressed by the FFXIII demonstrations... here's hoping this turns out better than that. At the very least it has a free roaming 'world map' so that's good!

Very true. Xenoblade is another game that we all found awful because of the constant running around large spaces.

I assume you're being sarcastic but that was actually one of the big reasons I disliked Xenoblade.

I agree that open worlds are tedious. What they should do is stick us in a linear hallway. All we care about is the battles anyway, am I right?

But that is exactly the problem with a lot of open-world/large map RPGs. Using Xenoblade as an example, it's maps were just excessively large field battle maps that you would find in any other JRPG (Tales of Xillia for instance) except somehow worse because there weren't any hidden loot chest to find. There was very little side content to do in its overworld so for the most part, all you were doing was fighting mobs. So in that particular instance, a linear design would have been preferable since it would have made grinding and traveling less tedious.

Visually, I like what I see in FFXV but I'm hoping that the overworld will be more than a glorified grinding spot. If you're going to use Skyrim as an inspiration, take more than just the size of its world. I wanna see loot chest scattered about, random sidequest/events, hidden/optional towns, a crafting system so I have a reason to explore and gather things, ect. The mention of fishing is a good start but hopefully there is more than that.

I would always be cautious when claiming that Square might be about to redeem themselves somewhat, but looking at this....They might be on to something is all I'm saying.

I don't know what you're smoking but Xenoblade had a large amount of "chests" and shit to collect, as well as a load of sidequests and the minerals to mine for gem crafting. Also hidden areas.
Traveling was very fast too despite the large areas (that weren't so large at all btw except the bionis leg and one or two others)

Xenoblade had a large amount of fetch quest and items related to said quests. I'm talking about equipment and consumables, stuff that is useful to the player and not just something given to a quest giver. And a hidden area where you find yet another sidequest item (or sidequest mob) is not the same as a hidden/optional town. Xenoblade's quest design makes MMO quest design look progressive. The gem crafting was alright though.

In any case, it's a far cry from Skyrim, which is my point. I don't want a large world map if it isn't going to be utilized properly.

I have no idea on the tech side of things, but based off what Tabata has said, the game has entered the stage of development where all the story, gameplay design, set-piece, voice-work scripting are (most likely) all finalised, and they're basically focused on mass-producing assets without concern because there's no way the design of the levels/cities/dungeons will change at this point.

Chances are that the engine from an asset standpoint is pretty much complete. And the finalisation of the engine from now till spring are probably more on the mechanics side of things. And game mechanics will probably be finished long before they finish building the final dungeon of the game.

(Disclaimer : unfounded guesswork, etc)

Depends if you subscribe to the train of thought regarding if Luminous is the visual aspect of it or a complete package. My personal interpretation - I'm leaning more toward Tabata commenting solely on how the game looks.

There's a lot of stuff unrelated to Episode Duscae which is done obviously.

it's a Catoblepas!

Even though I hate Square.....
..

... I want this game to sell in the double digits for millions. I don't even mind that I had to wait years for this. This game looks absolutely amazing. I'm still flabbergasted at how good it looks. It's almost ridiculous and too good to be true. I don't know what programming wizardry these Japanese have but this is already the best looking game of the generation to me. I want it so badly, come launch... I really might have a heart attack. This is ridiculous. That draw distance, the monsters, the night mode, the huge atmosphere and skybox... Just Ugh..

Take my money!

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much.

There hasn't been a double digit million FF since FF7 and that one barely qualifies.

True, but I hope that they do. This is going to be the first that isn't exactly turn based which opens it up to a wider audience, or people who hate the turn based mechanics of FF who can finally jump in this one.

What scares me is since it looks like the game itself cost so much to make, marketing it is going to be an issue that could hinder it's impact. I feel that this game will be the first to really go all the way for them. The word of mouth about how amazing this game could be, if it is, will probably work in their favor a lot. I see it, I really do.

Pretty sure he's just talking about the game transferring over to Luminous?

I would be so much more excited for this game if I could see it with different characters.

Mixing and Matching is a big part of JRPGs. I mean I guess I have to wait until they unveil what kind of skill trees/gameplay progression thing.

It looks pretty damn good though.

What do you guys think the odds are for a late 2015 release?

I can see a Japanese release happening late december next year. Not 100% but I would peg it at ... oh 60% chance.

We won't be playing this in english until 2016 though, I think we'll see a very similar release schedule to FFXIII. Japanese launch , PS4 only (complete with a PS4 console bundled with the game) hopefully by the end of next year. Then 3 months later, worldwide launch on xbox one and PS4.

I'm working off the belief that episode duscae is actually already finished and FFXV was apparently 60% done at this years E3. I don't consider that figure to represent the entire 8 year development cycle. Versus XIII had some CG concepts produced when it was first shown off but no actual gameplay came out for 2 years and I get the feeling that weak japanese sales of the PS3 combined with the well known fiasco that was FFXIV's initial launch put the breaks on that version. It never went into full development. So 2006-2011 was more like a pre-development and testing phase. Nomura couldn't pin down how exactly to make the game... well, a game. They likely had some of the CG produced , a ton of concept art and the cast was fleshed out, a story was mostly written along with all the lore but as far as development on the actual game goes - it was tossed out. That 60% figure , to me , represents the version that started development in 2012 for current gen systems. I imagine Tabatas team and Nomuras team spent that entire first year finalizing what to keep and what to toss while getting luminous engine up and running on ps4/xb1 dev kits. Full development kicked in by the start of 2013.

2012 - 15% complete, project FFXV given green light
2013 - 40% complete, scenario finished , playable
2014- 75 % complete (by years end), content complete, fully playable alpha, duscae
2015- 100% complete (by years end), japanese PS4 version released, localization work starts
2016- 100%complete + english voices + english,french,german,spanish,italian text, ps4/xbox 1 by end of march.

Obviously this is all speculation and hype on my part but just based on how much press and such has been tossed around for this game since it's announcement as FFXV , compared to the minimal release of info for versus XIII gives me hope that I'm not too far off base.

Not to mention a lot of those sales came from Japan where home consoles are in the dump now.

You don't think the west can dominate those sales? Also, wouldn't more consoles be bought due to this game? I doubt that in Japan, it will come out in low numbers. Wasn't there a poll that showed some Japanese were actually waiting to buy new consoles until specific games hit, which this one was one of them? I think it can happen.

I can see this game selling well, maybe a couple of millions right away, and then it could reach the 10mil mark on the long run.

I just think that to save home consoles in Japan we need not only FFXV and MGSV to succeed, but we need other companies to see that and also invest more on consoles. Hopefully Sony will continue to try and save consoles over there.

I don't really understand all the concern over pop-in, aliasing, the resolution, etc. right now.

It doesn't look this way because they aren't capable of more, it looks this way because the game is quite literally only half-done.

Tabata seems focused on making an actually good gameplay experience. This other stuff can and will be left to the polishing/optimization phase.

yeah i ignore any sort of graphical glitches until release really. Any builds the public sees prior to release are generally months old. And this far out, in an open world game, you will have a ton of glitches

This constant trickle of information is the best thing to happen to XV, final fantasy and SE, in general, in the last 10 years

They really needed to do something like this to get people's faith that they are actually making the game and they are not running across developmental hurdles anymore. I'm really loving this. (Also helps that the game looks gorgeous)

The clouds were confirmed to be calculated as far back as 2010 by Nomura himself.

Beyond that, cool graphics but show me what I can really do.

What do you guys think the odds are for a late 2015 release?

Game probably has main scenario fully playable with all (or most of) gameplay features enabled, with all areas already created but in need of being populated with monsters, NPCs, side content. As Tabata itself said, they now only need to mass produce content and then polish the game, graphics and bugs, when the game gets 100% ported on Luminous 1.5.

Holiday 2015 for Japan and Early 2016 for the west is the safest bet.
They could even try a simultaneous release, but Holiday for a western release isn't a good spot since it's too packed, considering the game has to sell the most copies possible.

And holy shit does this videos looks good, almost unbelievable for a game still a year from release.

It's like SE entered in my mind and took what i consider to be my dream game.

Agreed...we wouldn't be saying how great the info release was if it didn't look incredible.

Holiday 15 in JP, Q1 16 for the west?

Don't be so sure. Alternate modes of transport are already a feature in the game. The fact they mentioned Magitek Armof and apparently weren't supposed to tells me that's probably one of them.
In one of the Versus XIII videos, didn't Noctis get into an enemy mech and use it?

Something I don't see mentioned a lot and one of the main things for me that made FFXII's world so enjoyable is the creatures AI behaviors. Some will mind their own business unless you're too close to them, others are aggressive and will chase after you the moment they see you, and then there's those who wont attack you unless you attack them first(or attack some of their kind). There's even some little creatures who will chase you around, casting buffs on your party(or enemies, lol). The lovely mandragora family, each type with its own unique behavior traits, were some of the best enemy types in the series.

They missed around a lot with the AI and it help make the world way more believable and interesting than your regular RPG. Would love to see similar stuff in XV.
I believe wild animal AI was already mentioned to be similar to that, i.e. they'll mind their own business unless you provoke them or get too close.
