New God Of War III screens/trailer

Not all the time obviously but I'm sure there will be times where the camera zooms WAAAAAY out like in the other GOW games.

Like in GOW 1 when you crossed that wood bridge on the way inside Pandoras temple and in GOW 2 where you unchained the horses to get to island of the fates.
Yeah I love the camera angles.

Well they did gave a hint at the scale.

GOW2 went from 10-15 enemies on screen and GOW3 will have 50.
I'm expecting a modest jump in scale.

Holy mother of... I've been dreaming (OK, not dreaming, but...) about realistic monster damage (with gut spilling and all) being put into a game ever since Amiga games when a local gaming magazine tricked me into believeing one such game is being made.

This is seriously a huge step forward in the realistic gore handling in games, I'm surprised it hasn't been talked about much so far. Basically this and the skin collision detection are two important advances in player/monster/world interaction, bigger and more important than any purely graphical bells and whistles.

that zipper tech only apply to qte I think. so it's all scripted, we're no where near dynamic realistic monster damage like what I think you're imagining.

Yeah most of GOW 1 took place atop the back of a Titan anyway, if you recall. It's so big you can't really pan out during gameplay in order to witness the Titan because you wouldnt even be able ot see Kratos. They are so enormous.

If they have something like that in place, I don't think it's a problem to be triggered during regular gameplay as well as QTEs. Remember, first two GoWs already were a step closer to that ideal in that you could do a damage like ripping wings of some flying monsters, all doing regular gameplay, and that particular move would apply only to that type of an enemy.

oh ok. at first I thought you're thinking about how the zipper tech is applied according to what angle you attack the monster and have realistic wound and cut based on physic calculation which imo is not possible anytime soon.

but from your description this time, I can see why not, basically they applied the zipper to specific location and when your attack connect anywhere near it, then the wound open up. that's much more plausible and I think may already in place or in the mind of the developer.

although things like ripping off wing like you mentioned is basically decapitation and it's nothing new in games. the whole game of Dead Space consist of decapitation and a major gameplay feature.

also, I'm not sure if it's the same as zipper tech, but one of the enemies in Dead Space is a fattie that if you cut the stomach, numerous small creatures come out of it and attack you.

I don't know if I like the idea of having 50 enemies on screen. I'd rather have a few challenging enemies than a bunch of stupid ones.

According to the interview with Stig Asmussen, they wouldn't just put 50 enemies on screen to have 50 enemies. They would only do it if it's fun. So I'm sure it will be fine. Also you have to remember, it's not like every time you fight enemies in the game, there will be 50 or more or them. But at the same time there will be parts that need to feel like a war since the game is essentially The Great War 2, so 50 enemies will be more than appropriate in those instances.

As Stig said, if it's fun, they'll do it.

the preview sounds really good though, they don't want it to be like in any other game where even though you see tons of enemies, you still only fight against few enemies while the other is just stand there waiting for their turn.

the developer said that the gameplay is designed to focus on crowd control than 1 on 1 fight. like firing fireball to one group of enemies and while they're burning and distracted, you fight the other group of monsters. then there's a commander type enemy where they can spout order and the enemy grunts start acting smartly. one of the example I've read is they can form formation with their shield that is pretty much unbreakable until you ride a cyclops and smash them to pieces with it.

I'm getting excited at the cinematic and no cutscene. The camera probably shift at the cinematic part I'm thinking. The game gets more impressive everytime I read something new.

Will we able to skip the cutscenes? I was annoyed how I couldn't skip the cutscenes at parts.

Yeah what a performance eater that "zipper tech" will be!

I'm expecting soft body physics. Haven't seen those used a lot in games... I believe Gears of War has a cube o' meat which is the same thing.

The 50 enemies on screen thing will likely only be on special occasions. So you aren't going to be constantly fighting through mobs of enemies like in a DW game.

I'm pretty sure any butchering happening in GOWIII will be strickly scripted. As in pre-made animations.

Ok, Solid, who's this now?

You should make a thread and post the name of whoever is in your avatar whenever you change it, just to avoid being asked every time. :lol

New gameplay mechanics sounds awesome, can't wait to see those. Especially the really ambitious stuff that they weren't able to do. We already know they're doing stuff really BIG, hopefully they wow us even better at moments than before. Loved the huge bosses that when defeated only got eaten up by even bigger bosses and you had to beat those.

I'm really nitpicking here but since my first viewing of the trailer his outfit clipping through legs and such always stuck out. It might have something to do with me having a trained eye as a prior game tester, video editor, graphic designer, etc.... but yeah.

The simulated skin collision should fix this. There were also tons of enemies clipping through each other but that's not as big of a deal. Sadly skin collision wouldn't help them much since they were mostly bone :P

I think this is one thing that is never going away from videogames. And I don't mind.

Yeah, i actually thought of Dead Space fat enemy and limb cutoff gameplay mechanic in general, after I wrote my posts. Yeah, that was some good stuff.

Why would you want to skip cutscenes in a God of War game? They're like 30 seconds long...

For example when you have to repeat 10 times or more a difficult boss battle, and every time you have to sit down and wait for the cutscene to end. You'll start to hate them more than the boss itself.

I don't remember that being a problem in either game, but I see your point.

I watched the trailer again. God that is bone-chillingly epic. I showed it to my friends and they're all flipping out. <3. Sony Santa Monica makes the most epic shit in the industry, period.

Definitely

The only thing they should change about the cutscenes is adding a pause-option so I can clean up after being soiled with awesome.

Weren't people complaining about the chains on his arms? I watched the trailer again and it looks like they are either geometry or at least normal mapped. they arent just a flat texture so thats good enough for me.

parallax mapping on the chains i hope.

Not sure if anyone will be interested. But see my post here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14783137&postcount=1430

I have found my original copy of GoW I so I now have two copies. The 2nd is still wrapped and ready to be played. I'm not really fussed about that little money so "first" PM gets it. To clarify, that is GoW I. Great game. So great that I own two copies!

I'm UK so natch I'd prefer another UK-er (for shipping costs). If not, then Euro. If not Euro then NA. I realise I've left off whole swathes of the globe - just cos I've never posted to those other places before so not sure of shipping costs.

Cheers.

Can't freaking wait for this game... I just wished they hadn't delved so much into Greek mythology in the first two games. It feels like there's not much material left to work with. I'd love to see Hades from the first game reimagined in GOW III (although without those annoying spike towers).

Any word from Sony on a possible release date?
