GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE LICENSES UNREAL ENGINE 3

Tokyo – October 7, 2008 – Iconic Japanese developer Grasshopper Manufacture has licensed Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 for a new multiplatform action horror game to be published by Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS). The new game is directed by innovative game designer Suda51 and produced by legendary Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

“Unreal Engine 3 is a powerful, easy-to-implement game engine that is helping the creative team at Grasshopper quickly bring our vision to life,” said Goichi Suda, CEO of Grasshopper Manufacture. “The innovative tools and technology in Unreal Engine 3 help developers create games faster, easier and with less risk.”

“It’s an honor to work with Mikami-san and Suda-san on their next project,” said Jay Wilbur, vice president, Epic Games. “Grasshopper Manufacture is one of the most daring and innovative studios in the world, and we can’t wait to see what they’re able to do with Unreal Engine 3.

Hope this game is unveiled soon :D I'm really excited for it.

Can't say I'm happy with this, hopefully it doesn't look too much like most UE3 games. :\

This is the EA Partners game.

Honestly, I'd rather it wasn't. I don't care what console it's on, but I really hope it stays on only one. Exclusives are almost always of better quality than multiplats.

PR platitudes don't sound at all right when attributed to Suda.

So will this be Kurayami, or will this be a completely new project we've ne'er heard of before?

Of course it will be multiplatform, and it will be fine because many of the greatest games of all time are multiplatform.

GOD, some of you people.

It's not Kurayami. It's the PS3/ Xbox360/ Wii project he's developing for EA together with Mikami and Q.

i dunno about that -- technical ineptitude and ue3 can be a pretty frightening combination. i like nmh quite a bit, but it's a landmark of technical ineptitude

I wonder if they are going to create their own shader for Suda's played-out patented visual style or if they are just going with the generic UE3 lighting.

I'm hoping this is it.

You are entering a world of pain

haha, prepare for a poorly built, buggy (technical) mess.

That I will love every fucking moment of.

i think i'm agreeing with you on this one.
clearly the apocalypse is incoming as a result.

Thinking about No More Heroes and how it was put together, I can only imagine this game will be bursting at the seams :lol

If we're lucky, the Wii version won't use UE3, but a custom engine...

Is survival horror now a catch all title attached to anything thats meant to be scary, or does it still mean underpowered surviving without lots of combat? Traditional survival horror is getting a bit boring for me. More action horror I would be excited for.

Well then when the hell is he going to get around to making Kurayami? Kafka's not really in any position to make his own games these days.

I like to think that the whole reason Mikami's attached to this is to keep the wheels on the bus.

I tried to enter it in the other thread, but it got locked. My personal feelings on Suda's
one-note
visual style aside, I really do wonder if they are going to put the effort fourth with the lighting or just go with what has become known as the UE3 look.

And the chance the game will look gorgeous from an art perspective goes down at least 50%.

Suda being confined by Epic's engine?

As far as I know, Kurayami was never more than a concept. It was never really in production. Vaporware.

If i remember correctly, they scrapped the UE and went with their own.

No, it was a HEAVILY modified ue3.

Please more like Mirror's Edge quality usage of UE3 and not everything else.

Mirror's edge uses UE3?! Holy shit! There's an actual multi-platform game that uses that engine and doesn't look like ass? Wow.

Regardless, this game will most likely look like ass. Especially since it's in the hands of a Japanese developer. I mean look at Infinite Undiscovery, not even the almighty Square-Enix could make good use of the Unreal engine.

That's my fear. But if anyone can make a decent looking game out of it, it's 51.

tri-Ace does not deign to use outside engines. Do you mean The Last Remnant?

Well I guess that if wishes were fishes we'd all cast nets.

UE3 huh? That engine that Epic is too busy dicking around and hating the Wii to port to it?

Makes sense Mikami would go with that, he's probably still pissed Nintendo cut his head off.

IU isn't UE3. Last Remnant is UE3 and it looks terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.

i don't believe for a second he said or ever even thought that. -_-

Is this the game that is on Wii as well, or did they never go in to details?
yes, it IS supposed to be on the Wii. either they're coming up with a new custom engine to figure it out, or they're porting the UE3 engine over, no matter which way you cut it, this isn't going to end prettily, unless they go back and revert the shader architecture over to the Wii's TEVs, which, considering EA i highly doubt they are. i wouldn't put it past grasshopper to do it themselves, but they're not known for their technical prowess...

EA SIGNS PUBLISHING DEAL WITH GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE
Legendary Producer Shinji Mikami and Innovative Designer Suda51 Working with EA Partners on an All-New Action Horror Title

Redwood City, Calif – August 14, 2008 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a publishing agreement with iconic Japanese development studio Grasshopper Manufacture. Under the terms of the deal, EA Partners will publish an all-new action horror game produced by Shinji Mikami and directed by innovative game designer Suda51.

The title is being developed for the PC, Xbox 360® video game system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Wii™.

Whether it uses UE3 or not, who knows.

There's a difference between "for Wii" and "coming to Wii." I can buy crap versions of lots of 360/PS3 games for my Wii. That combination generally leaves Wii as an afterthought.

Capcom cut his head off since they made him look like a douche.

I'm more interested in hearing about his mystery Sega game.
