New Hot Shots Golf 5 Info and Screens

I might be on a tad earlier as well. If I pop up on your friends list, odds-on I'm Minna no Golfing.

okeydokey. i'll need to get the patch, though, so i'll try and start it at 12.30 ish.

I'm going to receive this game.
Two questions for you:

1. The patch

Let's say I play the game from my default EURO account.
Will I be able to apply the patch?
Will the game tell me that the patch is available or I have to log into the jap store and look for it?

2. Improvements with this patch
Please explain to me.
How did work the online game before today and how does it work with this patch?

All I know is about PSP version.
Playing online you have 2 choices:
- playing a 2 players tournament you can "see" the match of your opponent (and it is nice of course) like you do in VS. mode offline.
- playing 2 to 8 players tournament you just see the end table with some details about his play (chip in, eagle, water hazard,...)

What about PS3?

1. Yes. It's automatic, you have no choice.
2. It's now better - there's an extra mode for 8 players to be able to set up their own tournaments rather than being forced to one provided by the game. You can now see other players on the hole in question (in the new mode).

You can play the game online and download patches from any account. I play with my NA account on my NA PS3. It's not a problem. It downloads all the patches automatically when you go online. Prepare for a mega-download your first time on.

Previously, it was the second (fyi, I never played the PSP version) but with 40 players instead of 8. I haven't downloaded the patch, but I was chatting with Shihiko and basically you can now play an 8p tourney and you're all golfing at once (so you see everyone else and their shots, but you're not actually watching them and taking turns, which makes sense in a big 6 or 8p tourney). I'm sure there are other aspects as well but I won't be able to check it out until later.

just played the new tiger demo, same old same old, really looking for a change to something like this.

Yep, I played a decent amount of Tiger '05 or something on X-Box, but it really just doesn't compare imo unless real courses and golfers are very important to you (and those are pretty inessential to me). All the lazy reviews kind of treat HSG as the arcade game and Tiger as the sim game, but in terms of core gameplay mechanics (super spins aside) I really think it's the other way around. Eagle in HSG is generally so much more satisfying.

Thanks for the answer.
So, now I see you playing the entire hole (if we are playing the same hole of course).
That's awesome, isn't it?

So in the first hole do i see 8 players playing that hole? Or do we have different starting time like in real golf? :O

You're just all golfing together like this:

I patched up this afternoon waiting for Warhawk's servers to come back up; so I should be around for at least the start of that.

If we don't meet up tonight; some Saturday evening (GMT) golf? Midday EST onwards?

Oh, and usual GAF lobby? - Last floor; last room?

Yep, sounds like a plan.

Last floor, last lobby 8 ET. I'm good for tomorrow as well.

Shihiko's update about the patch is interesting for us non-importers watching this game from afar:

August 31st Update… Live Tournament Hosting is Here!
August 31, 2007 · Type: News Event · Shihiko

Again Clap Hanz extends the time required to do their update a few more hours to 19:00 Japan Time today. Though I was able to patch abit earlier than that… It seems alright. I played abit, the way the characters are displayed is slightly dissapointing because I remember seeing their concept of having character running to their ball after hitting it.

To access the hosting and joining features, there are 2 new menu options added to the lobby triangle menu. 2nd Option is now Join a Live Tournament and the 3rd Option is now Create a Live Tournament.

Though you are free to create tournaments now, you are still governed and restricted by the Online Rules. So… you can not create tournaments that involve the upper class characters just yet.

Creating Tournaments Menu:

Course [Ayame or Chura Umi]
Holes to play [18H, 9H OUT, 9H IN]
Tee [Regular, Back Tee Mirror]
Round Speed [Fast, Normal, Slow, Super Slow]
Auto Handicap [Calculates handicap for each player based on their best score.]
Limit Entry*
Special Rules*
*Currently Locked.

Other additions:

Overall players in the Clap House can be seen.
Can see how many of your friends are in a lobby.
No need to switch floors to see available live tournaments.
Onsen Lobby Futons now updated. Now work like they do in the online trailers.
During Tournaments the top players avatar is shown.
Characters Loyalty Level is shown in tournaments.

What does "loyalty level" mean?

It's just the level of your character. As you level up you get more power shots and the special spins and finally better perfect impact.

I forgot completely about this!

I downloaded and installed the Japan demo on my PS3 about an hour ago. Played through once using the 3-click bar, and once using the alternate method.

I don't know how to do spin, or anything really...I've just been shooting as best as I can.

Can someone explain how the alternate swing method works exactly?

Just think of the backswing as the power bar. Press X/O at the top for 100% power; it also flashes at 50% as a rough guide. Then on the downswing, press X/O again and if you get perfect impact you'll see a white mark on the ball. While putting, there is a beep at each 25%.

Sorry I missed last night, my ISP kicked me off at about 9 PM, and I didn't get back on. Hopefully I'll be good to go today though.

The new 'ball-moving-away-as-you-swing' distance gauge for close chips is a bit distracting. I like it for putting, but it's taking me a while to get used to it being there for close chips.

I've set up a tourney, and it's taken me out of the lobby to a kind of waiting screen. I guess I'm waiting for people to join the game I set up - 18h, seaside course, normal speed ( i think)..

er.. anyone out there? - can't seem to get to the lobby or send messages from the screen I'm on.

sweet come join us last floor last lobby we'll wait

Play a game first. I just woke up so I'm going to jump in the shower & eat first. I can join around 9:45, so in 30 mins.

Good game.
Typing on a controller is really hard, so I'll put my questions here:

-Are courses still limited to #1-2?

-Are characters limited to beginner characters?

-Is there any way to see the total scores of the other players? (how can you tell how far/close you are to everyone else if you can't?)

-Why do you still have to wait for the timer in this mode? Seems so dumb. If you could get to the next hole once everyone in the room finished, games would only take 15 mins instead of 30 mins :\

PS. I'm never picking max power w/Cs across the board over good impact. Sure I got an extra 20 yards, but I hit super backspin like twice out of 18 holes >_<

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. I think you are just referring to the score on the right side yes? E.g., -6?
4. Yes, wtf. I don't know.

ALso there is an auto handicap which is cool.

1. WHY?!? I want to play Silver Peaks :(
2. Arghh, I want my mid-level characters
3. When I move to the right I only see "my" total score. I can't see the other players. Only whoever got 1st on the latest hole at the bottom of the screen.
4. ;_;

Fun games.

I got really screwed on the last hole. Went into the rough, which caused the next hit to be a turtle even the it was right on the accuracy, which had the ball land TOUCHING A TREE and the game said, "you can't shoot in this direction, we recommend a -2 penalty reset" (never had that happen before). So I reset back to the rough and played the rest of the hole for a triple bogey >_<

My worst shot of the games was on some hill where even though it was fairway, when I got a super backspin hit, the steep angle of the incline the ball was on caused it to freak out and go like 10 feet into some grass.

Best was one of those castle wall bits where even though I got a turtle, the turtle caused the ball to sort of wind right around the wall making a 90 degree turn with it so I had a clear shot at the hole.

I really need to work on my chips. I didn't make a single one out of any of the games IIRC. Been too long since I played the 1p courses I guess ^^;

Haha brutal. I can't even imagine some of the stories whenever they finally let us play Silver Peaks. FROM THE BACK TEE. Mwahahaha.

Good times again. Like the new UI improvements in multiplayer, I got trapped in mediocrity on that last round though!

Can't wait for Silver Peaks multiplayer either, that is going to rock!

BTW, what is the deal with the Turtle, and the little 'note' speech bubbles? Anyone know?

One question.

When playing online with several people, what happens if the player is in the way of your ball when you shoot? Does it hit them? Do they move out of the way?

Oh and about the alternate swing method...when exactly are you supposed to hit it? Are you supposed to hit it when the circle is exactly the size of the blue brackets?

1) they're like shadows - it passes right through.

2) hit it when the circle shrinks right to a point on the ball. anywhere within the blue brackets isn't a mis-hit, but a perfect shot is at a point on the ball.

Turtle = horrible shot that will go somewhere out of your control. This happens when you completely miss the accuracy attempt, or when the ground angle/type screws up your shot.

Rabbit = slightly bad, and will diverge from your intended point, but not really bad.

I don't really get the music notes when putting either. I'll get a note and the shot will go completely off.

Aha! Yes, makes sense, thanks :)

... no.
no.

.no.

Turtle = slower than optimal, rabbit = faster than optimal
optimal = the white bracketed area.

both turtle and rabbits are substantial misses

if you go outside the red brackets, the screen goes negative, and a large bong sound is played... it means you just screwed up big time. +1 stroke. Or worse.

Ok, tortoise and hare, that makes sense.

I couldn't find it for shit when I looked for it. :(

Anyone in Canada or US want a copy of this game? I have like no time to lend to it and it is in great condition. I can sell it for 40 USD.

Depending on how many people we can get (looks like about 5 or 6 right now, but I know there are some lurkers playing along as well), I'd love to set up a GAF Golf Association when the Vs. comes out. We could have weekly tourneys, make a thread, and even have pics of everyone's preferred golfer/costume avatar. All that good stuff. Let me know if you guys are interested. I think it's worth it if we have 6 or more.

I'll start an official thread this weekend and keep a running list of interested people here:

1. AstroLad
2. Proc
3. Flek
4. nofilter
5. riffraff (from Shihiko's site)

Yep, count me in :)

Count me in for the list as well - got derailed from playing yesterday as the wife was playing Bioshock nearly all day.

I think it just gives you a note anytime the impact timing is perfect, so it doesn't take into account wind or misdirection.

So what are your guys' best scores so far? Have to note that most of these are just through first play-through (+7, har) but here's my screen. Fourth option on main menu then first option actually keeps track of a bunch of stats, including best score for each course, impact %, level of each player, pretty much everything.

Here you go.

I have no idea where the -9 on Silver Peaks came from. I was playing one of the latter challenges around there for about the third time and not really paying attention, posting on here between shots and stuff, and managed to just birdie some holes without thinking.

Hehe nice, notice we have pretty similar scores there across the board, I'm guessing mostly whatever was the minimum to pass each one on the first try. ;P

I wonder what that number on the top right is.

Those pics scare me ;_;

-18?......I'm never going to win an online match :P

golfscores.jpg

Top right is total rounds played, first number under each course is how many times you've played that course. I always avoided the 18 hole tournaments and did 9 hole ones because you lose less time if you completely blow a hole and fall from first to last.
