New Killer Instinct Is Episodic and Digital Only?

YOu can't be serious. You actually think this is good fucking news!?!?!

I agree with him. If done well, a Free To Play model would work really well with a fighting game. Whether Microsoft will pull it off with Killer Instinct is currently up in the air, though, because we don't know how much characters will cost. Until Microsoft reveals this information, outright condemning this change in monetisation methods seems dumb to me.

F2P for fighters is only acceptable if there's also a option to buy everything up front at regular cost. Otherwise the competive scene for the game will suffer.

what was the point of even buying this studio at this point jesus fucking christ

Not even just Nintendo but I want anyone to buy all those IP's off Microsoft. Regardless of your opinion of their output during the Nintendo years, I still can't believe how completely and utterly they have fucked up Rare.

are you forgetting about Xbox Live Fees, and the DMR online shit? did they brainwash you at E3?

Yea, the XBL fees didn't occur to me. However, I played the game and there's nothing stopping that shit from being in my hands. I was excited but skeptical, then I played it.

Wait, are you guys serious? A free game/character...is bad?

If the price of the entire available cast at launch is the cost of a retail game, how is this not good news?

It would be good if there weren't other F2P games with better models. Like... you know... a certain game called DOTA2 that has every single character unlocked for everyone. Damn, even LoL has a periodic rotation for free characters, so you're not forced to play the same guy over and over again until you pay. If it's really just 1 character at launch, the game will get old very fast, especially for casual gamers. People like to try different characters and see different moves, they don't start with the idea of becoming godlike with one specific character.

It's behind a paywall and having only one character doesn't let people explore different playstyles in the game. The more successful F2P games usually give players access to multiple characters/units from the start so the players can experiment. Fighting games are a bit different but having just one character available in a genre where character roles are very diverse seems strange.

Quantum break? Spark? Sunset overdrive? Forza?
Quantum Break we only saw an out of context in-engine cutscene and Sunset Overdrive was similarly just a quick trailer (not that I disliked it mind you).

I'll give you the other two though, while simple looking for a creation-game in comparison to LBP I would've loved something like Spark ten years ago.

You're also gonna have to pay for Xbox Live. Not really F2P.

Obligatory

Regardless of how well it plays, this means KI will never become a serious fighter. Fragmenting the user base like that is unthinkable... for sane people.

I don't really see the big deal. Killer Instinct was never going to be a serious tournament fighter anyway. IMO they'd be better off just trying to make it fun.

Also, aren't Tekken and DoA doing basically the same thing?

DOA starts with four free characters. Tekken starts with eight free characters.

Just about every fighting game demo ever gave you at least two free characters. Limiting it to one is just being cheap.

That does seem a bit odd yeah, which makes me think they might have a system where you can try out a character for a limited time. Seems like a smarter way to handle it.

Why doesn't MS just take all of Rare's IP and just burn them to the ground? That'd be better than what they've done with most of them. They've already basically done that to Rare itself and the employees. The gas has been flowing for years, so just light the match already. :p

Because you ultimately don't know who your favorite character will be until AFTER you've paid for it especially when Killer Instinct has been out in the cold for over 10 years (?)

Yeah if you luck out on Jago, then props to you.

Sure I loved Orchid when I played the original, and i thought Cinder was the right man for the win button, but I have no idea how much they would have fiddled with their movesets and overall game balance, if there is one broken character in the game the whole model goes to shit.

And this applies to DOA and Tekken to, although the blow is softened to a degree because there is a ton more familiarity and more previous games for reference points.

As long as buying all the characters individually is under or equal $60, I don't see a problem with this.

What? The "just pay for what you want" nature of the game not only means there's probably no kind of story or lore or anything beyond barebones fighting, but playing online is going to involve 99% of players being the exact same dude.

Awful awful awful awful awful. It's a sad day when Rare isn't allowed to work on their IPs anymore for fear they might kill them, but then MS turns around and gives it to some dudes who go on to murder it worse than Rare ever could.

This sudden surge of F2P fighters is not really comforting.

Nah, F2P can work really well with fighting games, it just depends on the business model. Of course if you're more into the story/single player part of FG, F2P won't do anything for you.

Unexpected to say the least, but as long as there's no price gouging involved, it's not the end of the world.

If the cost of buying all the characters adds up to what the game would have cost to buy anyway (or less), then what difference does it make?

Technically not all that different to a demo, in the context of fighting games anyway.

Hmm, if there was a 'full' offer at normal retail price point, that would be better?

I just...I can't guys. I just can't. LOLOLOL

is there a hashtag to summarize my feelings here because no words are adequate. i need a fucking social movement to describe my state of emotion

these last few weeks has been the best episode of Frasier I've seen in a long time.

You do know Killer Instinct was at one point bigger than Mortal Kombat. I dont see why it wouldnt have as much as a chance of being a serious tournament fighter than any other game. Fighters arent exactly the most mainstream genre

i love killer instinct but this is a fucking joke.
you don't give me an incomplete game that isn't even 1/10th of what its full package is and expect me to be grateful because i don't have to pay to try it...

i would rather pay full retail price for the full game anytime of the week.

.

As opposed to paying full price and still not knowing if a character is broken or who your favourite will be?

Do some of you think before spewing hate simply for the sake of it?
