Version 1.2 of the freeware game 'Knytt Stories' is officially out. The biggest addition in this update is the possibility to create custom objects for your levels, i.e. fully animated, moving objects, without using workarounds.

I thought I'd post this news here since it's been thanks to NeoGAF that I found out about this game, and about Nifflas's other games.
And also because I hope more people will make new levels for it. ^^
You can download the game from the official site here.

For those who are wondering what kind of game this is: Knytt Stories is a freeware 2D platformer with a built-in level editor; other than the official levels, which feature simple yet gorgeous environments and excellent music, you can download hundreds of user-made levels from the site or Forums (since the game is more than a year old).
I think Little Big Planet players who have never heard of Knytt Stories should definitely check it out, since they have some similarities and different strengths/weaknesses.

Thanks for this. Kyntt Stories is a beautiful, atmospheric game that's also a rock-solid platformer.

There've been some excellent and inspired levels and campaigns built out of the community. I hope to see a similar wave with these new tools.

Fell in love with the game's simple art back when it came out (I actually wanted to "stitch" together ALL the levels/screens to make one big wallpaper or poster for print....but alas, too busy for personal pet projects)...

They oughta release this on the iPhone or sumthing...an excuse for a quick escape into the desolate world of Knytt while you commute

Brilliant news, I hope this sparks loads of new levels and hopefully some new tilesets & objects for custom level use (I could really use some, i've been making my level for ages but have totally stalled, mainly because I suck at art and there weren't enough tilesets not used in hundreds of other levels - the story & custom music are about the only things that seperate my level from hundreds of other users works.)

Anyways, if you haven't played Knytt or Knytt Stories before do yourself a favour and check the series out. I absolutely adore the Knytt world and the beautiful art design & music that accompany it.

I used to have a selection of the best custom levels but lost everything in a reformat. Anyone have any suggestions for the good stuff?

My level list in the Favorite Levels section of the Forum contains a lot of good levels, but it's not up to date, so the most recent levels aren't there.

Downloading it now. How flexible is the editing? Can I make a character with completely different skill sets than the original one?

You can't have 'powers' other than those already in the game: a clever use of Shift objects may simulate new skills, but it's not flexible. Level editing is in general pretty limited, but it's also very easy to learn.

Interesting. I played around a bit with the editor. Basically, the numbers correspond to layers. The first few are background layers, number 3 is the actual layer with stuff to walk on, and 7 is the layer for enemies? Is there a good tutorial for this somewhere?

I'm guessing it's possible to switch out the main character by just redrawing the appropriate sprite png, question is just which one.
