New Lair PS3 HD video and screens

For whatever reason, one of the details I'm fixated on is the way they've actually gone and modeled the way the dragon's toes would curl back during flight. What else would they do when they have this much rendering capability, I guess, but it's just something to think that that's the level of detail we're at now.

I was surprised when in one of the videos, the player swoops down and the dragon grabbed one of those cart thingies and used it to take out a bunch of troops, they have time now to really polish up the game, I hope it will be great. ~_~

OK, that was unintentionally funny, because honestly, that pic with dragon flying looks like something I'd name "My first dragon drawing". It looks really simplistic and empty, and definitely not something I'd describe as "lively"

It's cluttered
Maybe when you look static pictures, but in motion it all makes sense and looks more natural that way, IMO. Especially if you play games on a big screen, you don't want plain and low detailed graphics in realistic looking games.

You mean a game that came out in the early years of PS2 that was able to stream open environements that you could fly around in on a dragon in realtime is empty? YOU DON'T SAY.

Actually, the whole asthetic of the game gives the environment a much more "alive" feeling. Lair is drab and empty and uses bloom way too much.
Yes, drab is typically the opposite of colorful. And the aesthetic of Lair is *supposed* to be conveying the feeling of a dying world since that's the crux of the game's plot. But in terms of what makes game environments "lively" - environmental effects, NPCs, enemies, etc. - Drakan obviously has nothing on Lair.

I can understand that the aesthetic of a dying world won't appeal to everyone and it's not personally my first choice, but as long as there's enough dragons in the air to grapple with and enough troops on the ground to mess with, it may not matter too much to me.

They really need to take a 'Fire 101' lesson from Capcom. For a game where dragons spew inferno, it really must look better than that to captivate a gamer (See DMC4).

You make a good point, but even in that context the environment still doesn't look like a dyig world, just a really empty one.

Still, they've hit the nail on the head technically and they still have quite some time to work on it, so I'm hoping for improvements in the asthetic department.

It was such a great game. Both the on-foot gameplay and dragon riding felt amazing. The combat was really fun as well, where lair's combat looks too scripted.

what game is that and what system?

does it play decent enough to pick up?

this game has the potential to make me buy a ps3 if they pull it off.

i forgot all about that movie dragon slayer till mentioned above.

i loved it as a kid as well. i need to buy that flick for sure.

I see that Blim went to great lengths to avoid the camera overexposure that's so common in these off the TV screen videos. Good job, I can imagine how hard it was with this game! :P

It's actually still more exposed and burnt out that the actual game is, but it's a first decent video of Lair I've seen.
Actually, like all other TGS videos, it's Snoopers that did all the hard work. He's a professional camera operator so it helps a bit :)

Lair is plain ugly to me. They need to completely overhaul whatever lighting system they were using in the demo.

The game has some serious LOD issues. And that dragon should be an X-wing >:(

[edit] the lighting in the trailer is fantastic. I wouldn't judge the lighting based on the Playsyde video.

Drakan: The Ancient's Gate for the PS2

I have it, it really isn't that good but not a bad game, either...the on foot gameplay is like a poor man's Tomb Raider (expect instadeath traps) but the dragon's controls save the game...I think it's worth owning (it's very cheap) but your mileage will vary

No it doesn't. It looks every bit as cluttered in motion as it does in stills. I'll take less detailed but well balanced over cluttered game visuals any day of the week. But hey, that's just me.

actually alot of it is down to the lighting and lack of detail...a battle field in general is cluttered and "ugly"...it is the smearing of everything on screen...have the time the dragon seems like a muddy streak...but it looks detailed when you can catch....

I think the gameplay looks quite fun and has potential....I can see reason for the critique, but to deny the game is doing somethings well visually is folly

peace

Like with most people... while it is pretty impressive technically, something is still ugly about it (at least in stills), and it seems to be THE WINGS. They just look "off."

It's pukey eye-hurting golden-glint. They just need to address the lighting and this game will look 10x better than it already does. I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about the draw distance. Check it out in the video - that one map looks like it just goes on forever and ever - in sharp focus too.

I liked the on-foot segments as much as the dragon-riding. It had some light RPG elements for the heroine where you could push her strengths towards melee, missile or magic and found the controls very acceptable overall for combat and general action. They did a good job of creating an overworld to fly around that still had numerous caves, dungeons, ruins and so forth for the heroine to descend into on her own.

On the negative side, there were some noticeable glitches in the game and the load times were heinous, plus it ate an obscene amount of space on the memory card for the save files, for its time.

Actually, I was judging the disgusting lighting from every recent picture and video of Lair.

These shots actually look worse to me. It looks like at some point the art direction just stopped and "let's put some more stuff on the screen" took over. The putrid yellow filter needs to go.

That's the price of the scale and draw distance that they are doing I guess. Yeah, LOD popup is quite visible at times, I hope they at least make it so it fades into view, not just pops in like that.

Also, which trailer are you referring to? E3 trailer has amazing lighting, but that was prerendered.

This one is still on my radar, It looks great and @ 1080p! Anyways they still have a long way to go with this one, and a lot of the features supposedly have not been implemented yet.

I don't think it looks very good at all. The water looks fantastic but that's really about it. The whole thing just screams "awkward" to me. Anyone saying it looks beautiful and gorgeous is jumping the gun. In a year it will look MUCH better.

I think it loogs ugly in many ways, mainly because of its rough state, though I quite like some of teh designs, but the detail is great, like on the troups, considering how many their are of them, the detail is fantastic. Better than any comparable title. Appoligies for the broken sentence structure

There is good detail. But in a year the whole package will look fantastic, and people should save the superlatives until then.

And I think that from a gameplay perspective, Warhawk is doing the same thing but better. If Incog can pull off the whole "one unified world" or whatever they're going for online, then look out.

I think they'll work those out but I'm glad they're not going crazy with DOF.

There is one shot in the movie when the entire freaking screen glows this horrific shade of yellow due to bloom on one of the towers.

It NEEDS to go.
