What else would they do when they have this much rendering capability, I guess, but it's just something to think that that's the level of detail we're at now.

OK, that was unintentionally funny, because honestly, that pic with dragon flying looks like something I'd name "My first dragon drawing". It looks really simplistic and empty, and definitely not something I'd describe as "lively"Mojovonio said:Notice how much more livley the environments look?
Maybe when you look static pictures, but in motion it all makes sense and looks more natural that way, IMO. Especially if you play games on a big screen, you don't want plain and low detailed graphics in realistic looking games.AltogetherAndrews said:It's cluttered

Yes, drab is typically the opposite of colorful. And the aesthetic of Lair is *supposed* to be conveying the feeling of a dying world since that's the crux of the game's plot. But in terms of what makes game environments "lively" - environmental effects, NPCs, enemies, etc. - Drakan obviously has nothing on Lair.Mojovonio said:Actually, the whole asthetic of the game gives the environment a much more "alive" feeling. Lair is drab and empty and uses bloom way too much.

I can understand that the aesthetic of a dying world won't appeal to everyone and it's not personally my first choice, but as long as there's enough dragons in the air to grapple with and enough troops on the ground to mess with, it may not matter too much to me.

It was such a great game. Both the on-foot gameplay and dragon riding felt amazing. The combat was really fun as well, where lair's combat looks too scripted.

Actually, like all other TGS videos, it's Snoopers that did all the hard work. He's a professional camera operator so it helps a bitMarconelly said:I see that Blim went to great lengths to avoid the camera overexposure that's so common in these off the TV screen videos. Good job, I can imagine how hard it was with this game!
It's actually still more exposed and burnt out that the actual game is, but it's a first decent video of Lair I've seen.

does it play decent enough to pick up?
this game has the potential to make me buy a ps3 if they pull it off.

My Arms Your Hearse said:Like with most people... while it is pretty impressive technically, something is still ugly about it (at least in stills), and it seems to be THE WINGS. They just look "off."
I liked the on-foot segments as much as the dragon-riding. It had some light RPG elements for the heroine where you could push her strengths towards melee, missile or magic and found the controls very acceptable overall for combat and general action. They did a good job of creating an overworld to fly around that still had numerous caves, dungeons, ruins and so forth for the heroine to descend into on her own.Gattsu25 said:Drakan: The Ancient's Gate for the PS2
I have it, it really isn't that good but not a bad game, either...the on foot gameplay is like a poor man's Tomb Raider (expect instadeath traps) but the dragon's controls save the game...I think it's worth owning (it's very cheap) but your mileage will vary

[edit] the lighting in the trailer is fantastic. I wouldn't judge the lighting based on the Playsyde video.
That's the price of the scale and draw distance that they are doing I guess. Yeah, LOD popup is quite visible at times, I hope they at least make it so it fades into view, not just pops in like that.cybamerc said:The game has some serious LOD issues.
Mifune said:I don't think it looks very good at all. The water looks fantastic but that's really about it. The whole thing just screams "awkward" to me. Anyone saying it looks beautiful and gorgeous is jumping the gun. In a year it will look MUCH better.
nelsonroyale said:I think it loogs ugly in many ways, mainly because of its rough state, though I quite like some of teh designs, but the detail is great, like on the troups, considering how many their are of them, the detail is fantastic. Better than any comparable title. Appoligies for the broken sentence structure

Also, which trailer are you referring to? E3 trailer has amazing lighting, but that was prerendered.
