New Lightning Returns "13 Days" SAN DIEGO trailer

I'm sorry for being so negative guys, but... what the hell is this? The environments are unimpressive to say the least; the battle arenas are utterly laughable; Square Enix doesn't really seem to care about whether or not everything has a shadow (some enemies do, some enemies don't. Some scenes have half and half where half the people in them have a shadow and half don't); the character models make them all look like they are made of plastic (and the secondary characters seem like they were just thrown together last minute); the character models themselves aren't exactly impressive; Lightning's hair is clearly off model; many of the cutscenes seem like they have a filter present that makes them blurry... Just What In The Hell Is Square Thinking?
It is by now obvious that this game doesn't have the budget of the previous games, so they're focusing all their resources on Lightning. The only person who tried to deny this was Perfo.

Granted, you have to ask if it is right of them to place costume priority over environments or even give Lightning so many costumes but fail to redesign the other characters barring Snow, who has apparently become the villain.

If nothing else, maybe the battle system will be good.

Every light cast a shadow, the more bright it is the more darker the shadows it cast are. Basically Lightning is incredible powerful but her power also brings the most dangerous enemies...

...

Yeah, it dosn't make sense.

But that's not true, lights don't cast shadows, objects/people/etc do. It's not even semantics, it's literally wrong.

As Meccanical pointed out it should be: "The closer you are to the light...the greater your shadow becomes"

as it is YOU who would cast the shadow, not the light.

Low budget Kusoge. That's what it is. IMO.

Toriyama has invented Shadow Lights.

Lights that cast darkness, thus defeating the very purpose of lights and making you wonder if they should even be called lights in the first place but everyone is too lazy to change it and now it has stuck.

So for those who have been actually following LR news, is there a growth system in this game ala level up and stuff? Last time I heard they scrap the Crystarium and they only talked about upgrading your equipment as a way to get stronger. I would be disappointed if there isn't any feeling of character progression (stat-wise) in this game.

There was a topic yesterday with a bunch of info in it, covered quite a bit.

I still want to play 13-2 but is it worth it. I have zero recollection of the story from 13.

FFXIII-2 starts with the ending of FFXIII then you see what happens 'next' and it's completely unrelated to FFXIII, it's basically a convoluted retcon. You can play 13-2 without remembering anything about 13, because it doesn't appear the team remembered what happened in 13 or what it was about either.

Please, let me put her in her XIII outfit. Even the XIII-2 Valkyrie-Lightning was preferable.
You'll need 13 and 13-2 save files for that but I think they confirmed you'll be able to use the legacy skins in one of the interviews.

On the trailer:
Apparently even after consumed by the chaos, the world still lived just fine for 500 years, bringing the date to 1000 AF I guess?
Funny how Lightning keeps serving all these random gods even after Etro has pretty much screwed her over (note that I haven't completed Requiem of the Goddess yet).
I don't want to beat Noel up. Noel is a cool guy.

The two times I've seen them for this game they seemed tired and distant.

Must be because of negative criticism...err....western thinking.

Kitase should of have the guts to not greenlight Toriyama's projects. They may net short term profit but in the long term they will be hurting.

I know, I was trying to explain the reasoning behind the quote.

The right way don't convey what they try to say...it seems more of a poor writing than rather some poor translation

I guess greenlighting this was the only way to have another FF console game in less that 4-5 years.

I mean, I understand why thing are the way they are. What I'm having difficulty with is how they think that presenting a game this late into the console generation in this condition is acceptable on any level. Not only that, but to release it in that state? I mean, now its too late to extend the dev period since they claim to be 90% finished and are probably near Gold. But just the fact that SE signed off on this? I don't care if it is a blatant cash in, this is the star franchise this game is linked to. At least act like you care.

Hasn't been in years, FF is pretty much Sonic status now.

Quick question: during interviews, do Toriyama and Kitase seem nervous?

The two times I've seen them for this game they seemed tired and distant.

I'll counter this, though, and say -- they've seemed like that every time I've met them from 2006 through til now. The tired/disinterestedness hasn't in my experience been exclusive to LR, but just how the pair have always been. The last time I saw them, though, 3 weeks ago, they seemed happier and more jovial than I've ever seen them, perhaps because they're in the home stretch.

When compared to others, is this the 'worst' generation when it comes to the Final Fantasy series?

Speaking in terms of popularity, quality of content, the Versus debacle, etc.

It'll be alright man, 90% of the previews I've read of journalist playing the game at E3 said it played really good and their looking forward to more of it. Just have to realize it's not going to have that amazing visual appeal you are looking for.

It's just like Xenoblade, despite being on the Wii, that game was good enough you could see past the way the Wii made it look. Hopefully this game will play good enough you'll be able to see past the way SE made it look.

Although after DLing the trailer from gamesyde, I don't think it looks that bad visually

Yes.

Even if you don't count 13 as a problem, 14's initial launch is without a doubt the biggest debacle in FF history.

can it even be argued?

NES: I-III
SNES:IV-VI
PSX: VII-IX
PS2 X-XII

Even the PS2 games have ardent fans. XII fans think its the best in the series. X fans think its one of the better installments. I don't see how anyone could possibly argue that this wasn't FF's worst gen.

Yes. There's no doubt about that.

I knew I wasn't offering too controversial an opion here because common sense tells me that the 8 and 16bit era were the glory days, the PS1 era gave us VII and VIII (nostalgia be damned, I remember loving them and thus they're still good to me), and PS2 era gave us X and XII. The latter a little controversial but at least it was trying new things.

I haven't touched a FF game this gen nor have I felt inclined to. Either way, it's a bummer to see the series go through what it has this generation, what with the underwhelming performance of XIII, long dev times, fans getting burned on Versus, and overall negative vibe I get when I read these kinds of threads.

Precisely my thoughts.

But I'm sure there's someone out there...

I had more fun with XIII and XIII-2 than I had with X and XII. I guess its subjective, unless you are analysing it from a sales/popularity perspective.

The environments I suspect look unusually poor due to the ToD lighting stopping them from pre-baking everything like normal.

What's really weird to me is that the last trailer had Lightning reference the actual (well you know what I mean) God. Not sure how we went from made up gods and goddesses to God himself.

They seem to be piecing some of the same scenes in each trailer. Show something new already.

If they keep showing something new every two weeks for every event we don't even need to play the game anymore. They're plan 'till now has been to show one major news every one major event. So you have to wait for TGS next.

S-E has never been so open about the dev. of one of their games, yet you complain about the lack of footage when... every week we get something new, lol.

You can't expect decent assets from a game that's only being made because they had a ton of left over assets from FFXIII. Probably just shoving those in there anyway the can.

So damn sad how low FF has reached. Maybe FF15 will bring it back.

The two times I've seen them for this game they seemed tired and distant.

They're probably forced afterall in producing these titles to cover XIV and XV's messes. Again, I keep saying Toriyama and Kitase are keeping S-E relevant when the others burn its cash.

The true Saviours.

Probably a quirk of translation.
Japanese does not particularly differentiate between a heaten-type deity and the singular God (although if the original speech featured 神様 as opposed to just 神 it's likely to be the latter).
