New Lightning Returns "13 Days" SAN DIEGO trailer

We have to wait until February for this? DAMN!

Looks hot as hell. Love the art design, love her costumes and gear (purple dress!), and I'm really hoping this is kind of like Bayonetta with Lightning. I'm really not even a big FF fan anymore these days, but this game has been on my radar for a little while now and I think its only going to start pinging louder and louder as February nears.

Nice. I guess I will just be a man-whore for Lightning. Yes, I have no shame.

For the first few hours until he got bored. :P

Yeah I just looked up the topic wondering what his final thoughts were since I only caught his initial thoughts.

In a weird way sorta validates my statement even more (although a bit of a stretch), considering most people usually hate the beginning and like the later parts. He seems to have had the opposite where he enjoyed up to chapter 7 then fell off.

This looks like something that will do irreparable damage to the brand, it looks embarrassingly awful. And they keep showing the same scenes and places and shit. I have a feeling this game is worse than anyone could expect.

When compared to others, is this the 'worst' generation when it comes to the Final Fantasy series?

Speaking in terms of popularity, quality of content, the Versus debacle, etc.

How is this even a question? Squeenix has been complete and total shitcakes this generation.

What's really weird to me is that the last trailer had Lightning reference the actual (well you know what I mean) God. Not sure how we went from made up gods and goddesses to God himself.

Kami-sama -> God.

This is a very common translation. I find it hard to believe with a Xillia avatar you haven't ran into this before. Did you think they were referring to Yahweh all this time?

I actually prefer this generation in regards to FF than the previous one. Especially if you go on including all the portable titles. Never I've been so satisfied with the franchise 'till now. 2006/2013 the golden era of it for me.

There is no snowy area on that artwork, just clouds.

They covered the mountain with clouds after the initial reveal. If you search well in the internet you can find the original artwork and there's an huge mountain with snow :P I guess it ended up being connected to the game-ending-parts thus they wanted it covered for now to keep it secret.

I honestly have a hard time thinking someone who started with the franchise in the NES-PS1 era could say this.

Though I guess if all you wanted in an FF was pretty visuals this would be a great generation.

FFXIII is definitely in my top 3 favorite games in the series. So that's already a big achievement, hopefully LR can follow. I've played the BETA of ARR and... I must say, the feelings I have are EXTREMELYYYYYYYY positive, so much that I might think that too is going to move in the top 3 favorite ff of my life. Style and music is TOO good to be true in that one. Add to this tons of minor games that I still loved alot, crisis core, dissidia, FFTA2, 4HoL ecc. and you can start to guess why, as a fan, I've never been more satisfied with the series than now. Really, NEVER. it could've been better with Versus and Type-0 joining too but... I guess I can't have literally everything now :\

If it was not for FF and S-E in general, I could've left gaming in 2009.

Not that one.

This one instead went up on the official website and then has been removed few hrs after for some reason if I remember correctly:

You can clearly see the iced continent with the mountain in it.

In terms of Final Fantasy maybe.

SE has been handling other franchises better, it seems.

I had more fun with XIII and XIII-2 than I had with X and XII. I guess its subjective, unless you are analysing it from a sales/popularity perspective.

I could see people enjoying XIII-2 more than XII and maybe X but XIII? Man I just can't even.

13 days left etc. was all over the trailer too bad you won't need 13 days to beat this game and seriously "The brightest lights cast the darkest shadows" or "The knight of light... Lightning!" can the writing get any worse? But the battle sytems seems pretty fun and music is good , everything else not so much.

That's hardly a continent, it looks almost like a badly photoshopped-in mountain.

Even so, does it not occur to you that if they removed it, and never put it back, that that mountain isn't going to be in the game?

They're probably forced afterall in producing these titles to cover XIV and XV's messes. Again, I keep saying Toriyama and Kitase are keeping S-E relevant when the others burn its cash.

The true Saviours.

No sane FINAL FANTASY fan would say this. The only reason XV was delayed for so long was BECAUSE OF XIV and the "Lightning Saga".

Toriyama and Kitase have burned the FINAL FANTASY name and brand. They aren't saving it they're destroying it one game at a time.

The brightest lights cast the darkest shadows.

The game is finally looking respectable. Noel is probably my favourite character from the whole XIII thing.

As costumes are actually a game mechanic in this game only some extras (about 10% according to Kitase) will be DLC.

Well didnt they say there could be up to 100 costumes? So that would still be 10 consumes as DLC. And if they are priced like the XIII-2 ones (3 bucks per costume I think) that's thirty dollars for every costume.

You are being wildly inaccurate.

Tetsuya san explained in detail why Versus was not released on the PS3 (lots of reasons including technical issues) and Wada san said the infamous "brand damaged" phrase explicitly for FF XIV 1.0. FF XIII & XIII-2 "damaged" the brand with 10 million sales.

XIV did a lot of damage but XIII should be right up there at least in NA/Europe. Toriyama and Kitase need to be fired.

Of course Wada wouldn't say XIII damaged the brand. No respectable CEO would say a game damaged the brand unless they are forced into a situation where they have to apologize to consumers (FFXIV).

You are disregarding the years before they decided to not release Versus on PS3. That decision was made last year. In years previous the XV team had to assist the XIII and XIV teams with their games. (Even though SE PR tried to cover it up)

You can't move on in production until you are green lighted for full production. XV didn't until 2011.

XV isn't at fault here. It's SE management, XIII and XIV's fault for making XV put on the breaks in development for so long.

Edit:

More like the dark ages, amiright.

You are actually right but cut me some slack, this was the very first impressive thing we have seen from this game.

Not sure what you mean to be honest, it's the same damn footage and sort of crap they were showing before. This video was a costume showcase more than anything else, there was no major reveal in terms of story or gameplay or anything like that. It was all quick cuts and montages anyways. What is impressive about this video that you didn't see in past ones?

Yep. A trilogy for XIII and spending 3 years using every available resource to revive an MMO that was DOA. Mismanagement at its finest.

For me sure I went from a FF fan to I don't give a fuck :P. I still look at SE news/threads because they have been such a trainwreck this gen it's hilarious. But Versus is still on my interest list but i'm not really expecting it to be worth of almost 10 years of waiting.

No I am not. We have always been wildly speculating about the state of production of Versus. They didn't decide not release anything, since for all we really know there was nothing to be released. Read Tetsuya san's statements.

@Midou, The brightest lights cast the darkest shadows IS POETIC LICENSE, let it go.

We do know there's a 4 continent (call it region as you wish) to be revealed, and we have that picture from 2012. It's easy to guess that the last continent is now behind the clouds where once stood a mountain. Now it could be that the mountain has been removed and replaced with a castle-like dungeon or whatvever, but I think is easier to think the mountain is still there just behind the clouds. Why covered? Because it's probably a key-event place for the final stage of the story.

No sane FINAL FANTASY fan would say this. The only reason XV was delayed for so long was BECAUSE OF XIV and the "Lightning Saga".

No one knows the truth. But with ARR happening and sucking all the resources, Versus not coming well on current-gen consoles, it's easy to guess that XIII-2 and LR – originally not planned – have been forced on Kitase & Toriyama by higher ups to launch at least some fucking game on consoles other than XIII -.-'

Yep. A trilogy for XIII and spending 3 years using every available resource to revive an MMO that was DOA. Mismanagement at its finest.

First of all, FF XIII got sequels because it sold well, that is not mismanagement.

Secondly, judging by the (beta) results reviving FF XIV might not have been such a bad idea after all. They are indeed turning it around.

Perfo.
The four regions are:
Yusnaan
Luxerion
Dead Dunes
Wildlands

There is no mountain, please stop.

I honestly don't understand any of this. Lol

It's so confusing I can't even explain it in a good way. Kami-sama can mean Yahweh (Judeo-Christianity), but pretty much doesn't without sufficient real world context. It's just the best way to fully localise it. 'God' is even confusing in English being used as a title, noun or a name. It's a Shinto thing that comes across as somewhat deist, like a 'highest-being'/'almighty'.

Kami and God are just deliberately ambiguous as fuck. :(

Been reading Nomura's statements for years. You can get a nice idea about how development was coming along between 2006 - Present. Nomura said that they had to halt development several times in order to assist with XIII. SE PR tried to say the magazine didnt translate Nomura's words right (even though it was a Japanese magazine). When XIV went down, Wada commented that all hands were on deck in the company to fix that game and that certain "HD titles" would be delayed for about 2 years.

So yes we do have an idea what went down. And like I said before its XIII, XIV and SE managements fault XV was delayed.

I wanted to say 5th continent btw, not 4th sorry.

Anyway regarding the mountain there's an artwork showing that, are you blind?
Plus, even without considering (why?) the artwork, there's still a continent in the one you posted it covered by clouds. You don't wanna say there's a mountain behind those? I'm ok with it. Still, there's a region behind because you can clearly see the grounds and beaches there. Plus it's so obvious that the clouds are there to hide something, lol.

Betas are free, plenty of MMOs have huge beta interest, but then when it comes time to pay, things change. Though even after launch, some MMOs do big numbers for a few months and continue to sink until they go f2p or shut down. We'll see how well FFXIV is doing 6-12 months after launch. I'm assuming it will take a lot of people paying per month for a long time to make up for the cost of 3 years of development for the entire team.

I very much hope it's successful, I've played a lot of MMOs, and I think XIV does some things better than others. XI is still around, but if SE actually learned anything from XI in the first place, they would not have launched one of the worst MMOs ever in the first place.

If I were to wager a guess, I could see XIV doing 500k+ users for 2-3 months, then sinking to 200k+ after 6 months then down to 100k or less after a year. I would love to be wrong though.

Well, if you look at long term and what FFXI has provided SE in terms of profits with it's subscription based service, the revival and vehement push of FFXIV is certainly understandable from a management point of view.

Again, hopefully that's true. Though XI did not need the 3 years of re-development time. MMOs are a big risk though, you've got a lot to lose if it doesn't catch on to a fairly big audience and quickly.

The trilogy for XIII, I'm not so sure. But considering they have already went on to say that they intend to stick to the philosophy of making sequels to their mainline games moving forward, I predict it must be doing some good for them if they are already committing to sticking to it.

I've never seen that artwork anywhere until you brought it up. It looks like someone's fanciful photoshop. The truth is those are just clouds and you're reaching for something that isn't there.
