Owen said:The Lonely Island guys had an event at the Soho Apple Store on Monday night (anyone else go?) and they dropped some backstory on this track I thought you guys might be interested to hear...
The track started with the beat; it actually had the cinematic-sounding chorus and they couldn't figure out what to do with the song because the chorus felt so out-of-place. When they realized it sounded similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, and that's where the idea to have someone interrupting and singing about PotC came in. At some point during the process, they decided it had to be Michael Bolton and became set on getting him.
The guys said Bolton wasn't too hard to convince. When they want to get a guest artist for one of their tracks, they record the song and send it over to them with a lyrics sheet; Andy does the stand-in vocals for the guest artist's parts. ("Yes, this means there is a version of the song with Andy singing Bolton's parts that nobody will ever get to hear.")
Bolton was a little more tepid about doing the video. He agreed to do it pretty much immediately, but had a lot of questions and seemed a little apprehensive. That was, until he got to the set and saw how much effort and money they were putting into it, at which point he was completely on board.

Rappers trying to make a hip-hop club song. Michael Bolton comes in and fucks it up with PotC + other film hooks. THE END.
If the "club" lyrics were also making a joke, the entire thing would have no point. No need to over-think it beyond that. I especially like the posters who are like "Bolton's parts are the best" ha. It's like... no shit.
