New Mad Max Gameplay Trailer Overview

Dat premise.

Well, the game looks great. It has great gameplay ideas (open places, building cars, leveling up/gearing up, facing multiple enemies/factions and looting). It could be bad if it turns out to be limited, or if it has bad gameplay (car controls look good, but combat is suspicious). I wonder how well will it run too, and whether it will give players incentive to play at some advanced point in the game--having a meaningful story or something to do aside from main missions.

Hopefully, the game will be polished and well-executed. I really like post-apocalyptic games with survival/grinding elements; the car mechanics and hand-to-hand combat with gearing up/RPG elements is just icing on the cake.

Well I was always hyped for Mad Max, and I knew it will be good, but I never thought it'd be this good, this trailer got so much coolness oozing from it.

As I always say, Warner Bros. are becoming my favorite publisher.

Avalanche has said that they are prioritizing world density over size, so I imagine there is more going on than the trailer can illustrate. It is an open-world game, so I guess comparisons to Ubisoft games are unavoidable, but if done right the game could be great. Mind you I personally enjoyed Far Cry 4 and Shadow of Mordor quite a bit.
I enjoyed those two as well, but I find that nowadays, when I burn out on just one of those open world games I tend to burn out on all the open world games filled with tons of side missions and collectibles. Its just a weird effect that modern design trends are having on me I guess.

Will keep tabs on the game all the same - maybe we'll see how some of that density you speak of plays out in actual gameplay.

this game has a lot of potential, i love the art style and graphics, i also love how they made the cars feel really powerful, and the fact that this is made by the same developer as the just cause series only strengthens my interest in this game

I see, thanks. And is he mandatory or can you just, you know, tell him to stay at a repair shop or friendly outpost or whatever?

If you drive the Magnum Opus he'll always be there but if you drive another car then he'll bugger off with the Opus to the garage. If you want the Opus back you'd need only fire off a flare and he brings it to you.

Since Max doesn't talk much, Chumbucket will help point out things of interest in the wasteland too.

Wow game looks fantastic, I thought it will look like an up scaled PS3 game but it looks next gen alright, some of the best effects I've seen, really digging the atmosphere, car combat looks very good, why they are releasing it on the same day as MGSV? such a bummer as i really wanted to buy this game at launch.

About damn time we saw this in action...and it looks damn good. Never doubt Avalanche.

Could be 2015's Shadow of Mordor, huge surprise hit.

Holy shit. This looks amazing.

Giving me serious Tomb Raider vibes. And that was my favorite game of 2013.

Can't. Fucking. Wait.

Not sold by this because I just see a lot of things to collect and upgrade along with the standard NPC fetch quest jobs. Maybe its just a symptom of all the big games starting to bleed into each other but this feels like an Ubisoft open world set in the middle of nowhere.

Looks like it will live or die by its car combat, because the melee stuff just looks competent, and the driving environments don't look all that interesting - in terms of the driving I mean - the visuals are actually pretty nice but it all seems vast and empty.

After witcher 3..and it will happen going to something like mad max will feel even more empty. Just Cause 3 at least for me is fuck shit up but in a good way like JC2.

I want less density and more size :/

I hate games that fail to represent their place well by making it so you never can go anywhere without a POI being in view. What the heck kind of desert is that? I can't go for two minutes on a stranded Good, Bad, Ugly fantasy because theres a POI in sight after driving 30 seconds? boo

That was a problem in Red Dead and Skyrim. Everywhere was somehow civilized, never true to a wilderness for even a 1 minute ride in RDR, never got that moment of long desert sprawl like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

You're right, but how fun is it going to be to drive around a wide open desert for long stretches? If all you're doing is holding down the accelerator it'll get old pretty quick. Seems like you'd need something to mix up the driving and keep things engaging - I don't really get a sense of what its like to free roam in this video, but I'm sure they've got something up their sleeves to keep things interesting.

Simo breh this year is looking great for fans of the franchise

Good lord I didn't expect the game to look this good as well. Seems like it will be a really fun open world game. WB is killing it with their licensed property games

Protagonist looks a bit modelled after Mel Gibson

No MP. Single player focused only.

There is some function about being able to see other players' builds but we don't know exactly what that will entail or how its going to work.

Damn, car combat could've been loads of fun.

The car combat will make or break this game, since its the only unique thing about it. I do like the "gameplay overview" trailers much more than cinematic trailers though, so thanks to WB for that.

Now this is how you do a gameplay trailer. I love what I'm seeing and can't wait. Also really glad to hear an Aussie actor instead of an American one.

Avalanche seems aware of that and sounds like they're still trying to find the happy medium between stuff to do and creating that isolated, Wasteland feeling.

Here's an excerpt from GamesMaster's preview they did last month:
Anyone who's seen the Mad Max films, particularly the first one which is less Road Warrior, and more of a slow burning character piece, will be glad to hear that touring the wasteland isn't all about exploding banditry. After all the very name of the wasteland implies theres a whole lot of nothing out there. Half of Avalanche's battle, it seems, was ensuring there was a balance between its bombastic car combat and a sense of isolation in its take on the (not necessarily Australian) outback.

"Our natural instinct was to just jam a bunch of stuff in there" admits game director Frank Rooke. "and we we realized: you drive a little bit, do something, drive a little bit...and that just felt completely wrong because part of being in the wasteland, part of being this lone figure out in this horrible stripped landscape, is to have those moments of downtime, to feel alone and to feel that emptiness."

To be honest, we're not sure if this balance has quite been struck. Even in our two-hour hands on, which was set during an early portion of the game's story, there was tons of stuff kicking off everywhere. From booming electrical storms, which require you to find shelter, to clearing minefields, which need clearing with the clever use of Dinki Di, a canine companion with a knack for sniffing out buried explosives, we never wanted for activities to be getting on with.

Can too much stuff be a bad thing, though? Thats something we'll have to wait and see."

Why would they launch this against Metal Gear Solid?

Yeah, the date seems like a rather foolish choice.

I'm sure it will change though,

Ironically Mad Max claimed the date before MGSV IIRC but ah whatever. If they move the game closer then awesome, if not then I'll be picking up potentially 2 awesome games on September 1st.

Or GAF's crazy head doctor will get MGSV delayed...lol

Love the world of mad max, and none of the games that have taken from it really captured me for too long. Hope this one is different. Hope the world is huge so they can spread out things properly, otherwise we'll get a mordor situation where the world was too small. Too many people will want to compare it to mordor set in a desert with cars so I hope it can shake off that with some more unique things.

Yeah, the dates were announced close together and seemed clearly chosen before they knew each others. I think Mad Max had no choice but to stick with the date at the moment and in the next quarter they can move it even just a couple weeks to save them a bit of breathing room.

hmm The shotgun should be used for intimidation tactics not finishers. But it looks like they are already getting rid of limited ammo with a quest. I hope there are huge restrictions for it. I hate how in combat every thing just seems to snap in place.

One more thing to make my interest get bigger...

Yeesh, I think this is going to be a sleeper hit for me (or rather this wasn't on my radar as anything interesting even really until this week and now I'm super interested to a might be day one or at least close to day one after hearing reviews).

Of course i"m a bit of a sucker for post apocalypse games. Especially if they sound they have a lot of survival element (need to find things to craft, limited supplies of stuff). It is sounding more and more like something I'm going to be investing a lot of time in.

If you use the sawn-off shotgun during combat you can't move while aiming, ala Resident Evil.

There's still a ton of content and gameplay details the video didn't cover so I hope they follow it up with more like the Rockstar ones.

Not sure I get the complaints of vast nothingness.

1.) this is the apocalypse

2.) cars are a major feature

3.) car combat is a major feature.

To me that means there is going to be a lot of ground to allow the car combat and atmosphere to feel natural and work. I actually like the idea of a huge sprawling map that feels like a true wasteland. Where civilization and points of interest are spread out.

What they need to make sure of is that the combat is interesting. Landmarks are dense, rich and varied. And that the game has the right mechanics to keep it interesting. I echo the idea of a nemesis type system. I think it would be a good way to make combat stay fresh and add some intrigue. Like having a nemesis that stalks you or kidnaps your allies to draw you out.

There are a lot of interesting directions they could go. But yeah, if it ends up like a ubisoft fetch game with straight forward missions and forced side quests that feel like a recycled formula it could get stale fast.

Interesting concept, but before getting hyped, I will wait for more info on the actual gameplay. For now it's on my watch list.

Holy cow, I didn't even bother seen footage because I thought it was going to be terrible...boy was I wrong. That looks amazing, I don't know what effects they are using but looks very atmospheric. The got the wasteland down.

You and me both, I feel exactly the same about open world games. I watched it and I was enjoying the trailer, but then I had a voice of reason telling me I probably wouldn't enjoy the game.

That's how I was.

I'm hoping this will turn into this gens Batman. A licensed game that people were skeptical of then turned out to be one of the best new franchises of the gen.

I love apocalyptic settings so this is a welcome treat if it turns out to be good.

This plus Fallout will definitely fill the void of apocalyptic games for me.
