Hololens is Augmented Reality not Virtual Reality

How is that remotely the same thing?

Hololens is Augmented Reality not Virtual Reality

do you guys even read the articles?

this isn't Morpheus.

why do you think that Camera is there on the front of the HMD?

you are in a room, the camera shows you the room... augmented reality happens all around you.

and if they wanted, you can pull up screens and enlarge them, bend them, etc...... like with these Move demos in the past... just replace the TV screen with your headset screen.

It's pretty much vaporware since they aren't working on it anymore, if I recall correctly.

Vaoprware means a product that is eternally promised but never actually materializes. You can get a Glass if you really want one. Disappointment is a more appropriate label for Glass, although I always figured it wasnt going to be a compelling product.

... Yes. The things you are showing aren't the same thing you are describing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited with what Microsoft is doing.... they are showing more and seem to be all in, compared to Sony.

I was just responding to some in the thread, like tech like this hasn't been done before or even demoed to reporters.

In pieces, the tech has been shown before. Like in pieces, the car was shown before the first automobile. But the combination of old things, with the iterative improvements in quality, give you basically brand new things.

So while yes, a head mounted display has been shown, controlling virtual objects with gestures has been shown, object recognition has been shown... It doesn't mean that something like this is old news.

there are two state of the art 3D cameras filming this I cannot expect same kind of stabilization from a separate, cheaper headset as shown in the demo.

yes I am all over the place (I'm at work).... but I'm just going based off what i've followed these past few years, and putting them together.

I've experienced augmented reality with my Vita....

Looks super cool but I will believe it only if we start getting real world impressions. The milo demo still leaves a sour taste. If it works as advertised then exciting times ahead for us consumers.

Very cool, but there is no way I am ever, ever wearing fucking VR goggles around my home.

I love these presentations

"this is modeled after my apartment! yeah so im just this regular guy, the worst at keeping in touch! honk honk, also I have my calendar here cause like my boss would tell you im late for every meeting am I right hehehehhe IM NORMAL"

I continue to be amazed at how many people continue to believe in these impractical vr projects. Glass is decent, but these full headsets are just ludicrous for multiple reasons. First of all being people look crazy wearing them.

oh no, not saying that is the case... far from it.

but it just seems like when these types of Demos were shown in the past, many brushed it off or bashed it.

it's just interesting that many are excited for it now.... I think that's great for everyone. Including me. As long as the demand is there, the more likely I'll be able to buy one of these suckers for myself.

People looked pretty stupid staring down at their giant iPhones too. Look how that turned out.

So VR doesn't interest you either?

VR is cool, I just don't think it's long term. It's one of those bridges to get us to the next level but with everyone trying to compete in the same space, no one is trying to see beyond that. I get that these things happen gradually over time, but sometimes it really kills me when one competitor comes out and the next decides they are going to do the same thing but better not changing the full dynamics of the product but replicating it to the exact and following suit with different features. It makes it entirely wasteful.

I'm not a scientist or hardware engineer myself but if everyone is coming out with wearables, I don't think it's very hard to see that this might be something that can be improved on to a more higher plane. It would really kill me if Apple decided that they were going to step into VR and completely change the game by doing that ball example I just laid out.

You know this isn't the same thing. Using a phone that has been improved upon for years is completely different than a product that you wear to project things in your house. It wasn't crazy using an iPhone, that's why it was called revolutionary. It was the natural evolution to what the phone was.

Wearing glasses to replace a phone just isn't... In this way yet.

Wow the Community episode nailed it.

Microsoft: "Rather than fumbling through tabs, its right where you place it!"

Um, using two fingers is faster than gesturing wildly through the air to take the file from the filing cabinet and place it in the volcano to delete it.

I don't know anything about hololens aside from the video, but I want to believe something could be done with a beefy PC nearby and wireless streaming.

It was crazy and looked ridiculous for anyone not doing business related stuff on a phone that big. Think about the landscape of phones then, a giant (at the time) touchscreen just looked nuts and this was well before they introduced the app store and the revolution that brought.

This is early still, MS' patent that leaked years ago showed a used wearing normal looking glasses.

Maybe I'm just an old man, but I can't imagine a scenario where I'd rather watch TV through some AR Goggles than on a physical TV.

Everything here looks really cool, but it just seems like another solution without a problem. I don't know - I want to love it, but it's not amazing me because I can't see myself actually wanting to use it.

Dude no, the blackberry existed. Touch screen phones weren't lacking in the area and going on the Internet using a phone wasn't far fetched. You had to go into the Web browser, even on a flip phone, to buy ring tones. Yall are making it seem like cellphones before the iPhone were some ancient fat technology.

Did you forget about the Sidekick? The Razr? Like these were phones that were hot right before the iPhone. It definitely wasn't crazy to have one, and a lot of phones at the time was already implementing touch screens before hand. And the iPhone definitely wasn't giant when it came out. It was only 3.5inches.

The Sidekick was literally bigger.

What if you could take that TV to any room with you by telling it to follow you?

What if you pinned something like an email app in the kitchen, or a calendar with what you have going on for the day pinned to a wall when you walk out of your bedroom?

For the record... you can use a mouse with this.

Would that TV actually look as good as a real TV? I haven't worn any of these goggles, so I don't know. I'd still be wearing goggles, though, so no?

As for your second question, I have that on my phone that goes with me everywhere - would I be taking a shit and walking around during my whole morning with the goggles on? That, for me, is the big weak link in this whole concept.

This is a first gen product. As the technology improves, it will be improved up for years just like the iphone....

Eventually some day in the future this will be no different than just putting on some eyeglasses.

No, they didn't. People have been holding things in their hands and looking at them for a very long time. Not to mention blackberries, cellphones, ipods, etc. leading up to the iPhone. That is in no way at all comparable to standing around wearing ridiculous looking goggles interacting with things that aren't there.
