new nintendo 2ds xl comes out july 28 $149

I'm excited that this seems to be returning to a concave design top portion of the system. The lower screen seems to be recessed as well. Should mean no more scratched upper screen. I can't put my New 3DS in my pocket without a cloth inside as protection or the pressure from when I'm sitting causes the lower bezel to scratch the top screen.

I might grab a pair for my kids. They're still using the OG 3DS systems. Nothing wrong with that, but a refresh at the end of the generation will keep them playing for a long time.

Looks pretty and I love the colors but I just don't see the point. Granted I hate my 3DS and hardly play it but love the Switch.

You hate the 3DS...that's probably why you don't see the point.

Kill this bloody device and focus completely on the Switch!

Why? Some customers aren't ready to drop $300 to play the half-dozen Switch games that are currently available. A 2DS at $80 or a 2DSXL at $150 gives them the opportunity to get their Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon on for a quarter or half of the price now and they can "upgrade" to a Switch when it gets cheaper and builds up a larger library in the future.

This sbould have come out a year ago. Releasing this after the Switch is like....wat.

Releasing this after the Switch is all like...Nintendo likes money and wants to sell games to as many people as possible.

I have to say all the "Bubububu Switch exists why does this exist?" posts in this thread are some prime comedy. Keep it up.

If the screens being used for this new model are IPS and consistently used throughout production...so you're not playing a screen lottery, I'd pick one up. If the Dragon Quest one wasn't a Japan exclusive, I'd definitely jump on it no matter the screen being used.

I thought the whole argument for the hybrid device was so the mobile + console teams would all develop for the same system. If they are still working on DS games, what's the point?

It's the Gameboy Advance SP for the 3ds. I think it is a good move.

I'll get one, maybe sell my Majora's 3DS XL.

I see people treating this like the SP and Micro in the future when they are not that available.

Does this play New 3DS exclusive games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS?

Also if it does would they need to change the box art? It currently says "ONLY FOR NEW Nintendo 3DS" which wouldnt be true anymore.

Yes it does play the new 3ds exclusive games. As for xenoblade I am not sure they are even printing it anymore, they will need to change it on the digital storeas in add 2ds xl to the list).

Most, if not all, of Nintendo's internal teams have already moved on from the 3DS, but the 3DS is still selling, and Nintendo still has a few games in the pipeline for it. This device lets Nintendo deliver the features people care about (large screens) without paying/charging for the ones people don't (3D). Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all do this.

If it caused less hand pain than the 3DS XL I'd go for it.

There are more than 1,000 games for the 3DS and people still want to play them, so one more budget-friendly device at the end of its lifespan makes sense to me.

Well, games still say "Nintendo 3DS" on the boxart and in some titles like Mario Maker and Smash Bros., as weird as it is, the Nintendo 3DS brand encompasses the 3DS and the 2DS.

It says "New", of course it can play New 3DS exclusive games. If you need affirmation it is written on the official site

Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS was launched back when only the XL model is available in the US. Come on.

People buying a 3ds variant this late into the systems life aren't the same people buying a console in the early days.

It also serves as an upgrade for those who are still holding on to the older model.

I kinda regret buying a 2DS a month ago now, although at that price point I'd go all in and get the 3DS instead. Still a bit annoying as I never expected a enhanced/refreshed 2DS model.

What? I don't understand the comparison to the SP. The SP added a variety of features not available on the GBA.

This is just a 3ds xl without the 3d...

In time, that will be the case. As it is now the Switch is too expensive and there's still too many 3DS owners buying software for Nintendo to just abrupt all sale of the system immediately after the Switch launched.

Hell, if they shitcanned the 3DS line right now there would practically be no Nintendo hardware to buy with the NES Classic being discontinued and the Switch being practically impossible to buy.

this confuses and concerns me a bit, but i guess they are just trying to eek out every drop of the 3ds line. sales are declining. software is slowing. but that doesnt mean they can't turn a profit still of it.

and thsi is in noway equal to the GBA SP for those stating that comparision

The price and branding strategy rubs against Nintendo moving forward and what their competition has been doing for the last year.

The smaller New 3DS went for $99 during the holidays. This system has the same features, minus the 3D, for $50 more. The screen size, particularly something of that resolution, hardly deserves the markup. TN and IPS don't matter either in the cost equation though I hope for the latter. If it isn't eplicitly stated in the specs, it's probably going to be a lottery.

It's apparent that the age of the actual hardware contends with the more modern design.

This thing was made to produce some incredible profit margins and keep investors happy. By any measure and regardless of the game library, it's still based on 7 year old mobile hardware with a new chassis.

I wish this thing was region-free and they made the extra effort to make higher resolution panels since 3D doesn't matter. There is probably a way of making beefier hardware at this point and upping the internal resolution of the software without performance or compatibility cost.

Ive never had a 3DS, or 2DS or New 3DS. This can be pretty confusing for newcomers.

I would love to get one as my final 3DS. Kinda wish the hinge wasn't so large, but I guess they had to put the dumb camera features in for full compatibility. Ugh.

Hope the build quality is up to snuff. I swapped out my OG 3ds for one of the $99 new 3ds' s and the build quality feels like shit. Screens are less bright, circle pad clicks in circular movements, back faceplate feels loose, plastic on the hinge is a little warped. My OG 3ds had paint peeling on the dpad and ran like shit, but the thing was a tank.

Why are we using Black Friday/Holiday sales prices for items that sold out asap as the base price or expectation for this new device ? Even the 200 n3DS XL consoles sold out last Holiday season - most people dont give a damn about 3D anymore, being able to get best 3DS version without the 3D for 50 bucks less sounds good to me.

And yeah there will be Black Friday deals where the 2DS XL will be cheaper than the 150$ standard price as well.

I have a launch 3DS and this is the first revision that I am seriously considering picking up.
Hell, I may get one for my wife as well so she can play Majora's Mask with the right nub.

Looooool Nintendo. Here is our overpriced new handheld system we desperately need to sell, let's undercut that product with a new even cheaper 2DS.

You pretty much summed up my feelings perfectly. This really should have been 99 dollars.

Sweet! I'll probably pick one of these up! They dropped the stupid 3D and it has the clam shell, finally. $150.00 is a good price. There are a ton of games on the systems I have never played that can be found super cheap.

I just hope it is of solid build quality with a nice screen.

I'm excited for this! All I have is the Nintend DS Lite that I still play to this day. The 2DS XL is a nice upgrade!

Hopefully, the price will be $100 near black friday or the holidays. :)

? there are currently 41 titles available for switch. but your point remains.

I mean, I have absolutely no intention of buying this in the slightest, but I do think it looks excellent! Great form, colors. C-stick, better processing power. No 3D to up the cost and drain the battery. Well done, Nintendo.

I don't blame Nintendo for hedging their bets but it's kind of another slap in the face after ditching the WiiU.

You're supposed to go all in on the switch to make sure it succeeds, now I feel like they'll try to keep the games and 3DS sales going.

I've been waiting on either a price drop for 3DS or something like this as a slim unit for a while now. Not all that interested in 3DS games but I do have a good collection of DS games I need to finish so hopefully this retains the DS compatibility.

I think that's a safe bet since the N3DS was $99.99 for this past Black Friday.
