New PS3 owner. What do I need to know?

The remote can be handy for much more as well. I use it for the store, Mainichi Issho, and messaging.

Wireless works flawlessly for me. Just be wary of using a WRT54g router without custom firmware.

I'll give that a shot. The scratch is about an inch long and noticeable when the light hits it a certain way. So far, I've tried Scratch X and Quixx Scratch Remover. It's a lot less noticeable now but I still see it. I see why Sony had the PS3 under glass when they unveiled it to the press. ;p
 
When I get mine I'm sticking in a 300gb harddrive, getting a remote, blutooth headset kb/m, setting it up as a media hub, and getting wipefreakin'outhd and granbleedin'turismohd to view on my 1080p tv!!

And I'd recommend you do the same.
 
Why isn't there just a official "PS3/360/Wii Recommendation" thread stickied? There are like 5 of these threads every week.
 
Wireless is fine. You obviously won't get the same dl speeds you would if it were hardwired, but for online play it works perfectly.

Also, get motorstorm pacific rift and gran turismo 5 prologue.

Hey, glad I could help! Not sure about the service plans though.

I was pretty bummed when I missed the Amazon PS3 bundles last weekend, so you can imagine how stoked I was to find this one. I believe this deal is going on for another week or two at least, or until the coupon codes run out.
 
So I just made the plunge yesterday (thanks to the SonyRewards.com $150 off deal) and bought a PS3. There are some good game suggestions here and in the other exclusives thread, but what I really want to know is this:

Does anyone make a controller that is similar to the 360's? Yes, this may sound like heresy to you Playstation stalwarts, but I have an very tough time with the PS3 controllers after having used the 360 controllers for three years now. I like the way the thumbsticks and triggers conform to your fingers on the 360 controller, rather than the opposite on the PS3 controllers I've played on.

I notice Mad Catz made a PS3 controller, but I've no idea how it feels in-hand. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
I've been wondering a few things about the PS3.

- Are there printers that are compatible with the PS3?
- Can the PS3 use pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
- What is the functionality of the card readers? Can you use them to transfer game saves?
- Is it difficult to stream music or video from a PC to the PS3?
- Is there a Bluetooth universal remote that is compatible with the PS3, like a Harmony remote?
- Is it possible to create your own custom theme, or only the background?
- There's a very limited amount of avatars available. Can I make my own? If not, where can I download more?
- Can you use USB hubs with the PS3?
- Is there a size limit on the external USB hard drives/flash drives that I connect to the PS3?
- Can you install web applets like Flash and Adobe Reader to use with the Playstation 3's browser?

- last I looked you can use canon, epson... might be some others now
- yes, bluetooth is universal
- card readers are for memory sticks, sd cards, compact flash... you can use them to back up date or transfer files
-you can create custom themes, there's a compiler lying around somewhere
- avatars, you can't make your own, though sony said they'd be adding more sometime soon
- yes you can use usb hubs
- no size limit on external drives iirc
- flash is built in to the browser
 
Something I've been curious about. I've been wanting to encode my DVDs to DiVX and store my Sarah Connor Season 1 and boatlaods of Galactica and Buffy DVDs on the machine's hard drive.
Can I do that nowdays with the PS3?
Or do I have to stream movies from PC>PS3?
I hate media streaming though.:/

You can do either.

Put them on PC in h264 or divx and stream them, or copy them to PS3. The PS3 will not rip DVDs by itself though.

I am not sure to what extent we can discuss piracy here though...

I would use Tversity, it it fantastic for what you are thinking. You can stream without reencode, or just hit triangle on a file and hit copy to download to PS3.

You can play divx files now, yes.

I've already got DVD Fab Platinum for ripping my collection.
But nah I don't pirate movies. I just like having a huge hard drive full of stuff from my DVD library. You know - I can watch it in a console without having to plow through my closet and have the whole thing come crashing down on me at times.:lol I buy more horror films than anyone on the forum probably.:b This and using the system's web browser are gonna be quite fun. YouTube gets lots of love in my home. Shit if I'm not uploading tons of video I'm watching them. The whole multi media box thing is one of the sexiest things about this machine. Games - I already know what I want for the machine,just need to catch some deals on them first.

They have to be formatted in FAT32. Windows places a limit on the size for this, but there are 3rd party apps you can find to format larger sizes.
 
Help you justify your purchase? Aren't you supposed to justify your purchase before, you know, purchasing the thing?

That's how it works for me at least.

Making a top5 at the moment would be so pointless as with the ammount of new games out everyone's would be completely different.

You can't really say "top games". They're all great that you'll be satisfied with anything that catches your eye.
