New Ps4, DNS errors, extremely slow download speeds, wireless.

Even wired is garbage on ps4. To get optimal speeds youll have to constantly start/stop the download. Don't know what sony did but it's beyond stupid.

You could be seeing traffic issues on the PSN side for your region

Out of your control unless Sony beefs infrastructure to better handle high traffic

You can rule this out by running a speedtest in the browser

Sony wireless is garbage. It's always been rubbish on every single Sony product that I've owned.
I gave up on PS4 wireless and ran a wire in the end. It's the only device I've had to run a wire for in the house.

So I ran into this problem about a week and a half ago. The DNS suggestions don't help, that's not how the internet works. What did work for me was super simple; all I did was reboot my modem and router. It had been several months since I did this and I wasn't having any issues on any other devices. I didn't even need to reboot my PS4. PSN speed test jumped from 850 Kb/s to 25 Mb/s
Yeah, this was the very first thing we did :/ I truly wish that would've been the end of it ha :)

While I appreciate this sentiment, wired is not an option at my house. I guess I could try those electricity converter things.

how is wired not an option? run a wire. Lol I understand some people may be in a situation where they aren't allowed say in apartment building or something but you can pretty easily get your cable or some dude to professionally add outlets.... you just tell them your going to buy something and they come right out!

As others have said the PS4 wifi is utter shit. I get speeds on wifi up to 24mbps which is fine but then other times for seemingly no reason I get speeds of like 400kbs. All other wireless things in my home working perfectly. It's garbage. Just today I picked up a powerline kit as running a long ass cat5 cable from my room to my living room is not happening. Use a wired or a powerline connection unless your ps4 is literally feet from your router.

So much good information from so many of you, thank you for sharing, I've got a lot more to try now than the haphazard google results I was trying most of the evening.

Overall though, I'm certainly going to get this thing wired.

I heard the wifi issues also have something to do with a bug on the OS level where the chip dedicated to background downloads and constant connection in lower power state takes over and doesnt reset

For me running a connection test always cleared it up

Thats the best :)

What games did u get with ur ps4 man

Sadly my router is right next to my ps4

Sweet that makes it even easier to go hard wired.I'm using a TP Link Archer c9 router and its seriously one of if not the best router I've ever used with PS4 and wireless devices.

However for connection based errors there's two options either port forwarding or put your PS4 on DMZ its relatively safe unlike PC.

Detailed instructions for both port forwarding and dmz for PS4 can be found here

Ps4 wifi drove me to get a powerline adapter and I'm very happy with the results. Any chance Sony will fix the crap wifi in future ps4 models?

Awesome, thanks for sharing this :)

Specifically was talking about that phrasing. Sorry for trying to get more information about why you did or did not like doing a specific fix. PS4 wifi does suck, but if you are really having a DNS issue, wifi may not even be the problem.

Pretty sure you just misread what he said. He said "that kinda worked and kind of didn't". Maybe if he added a comma after that, it would have been more clear, though, like:
Online I found some things that kinda worked but also kind of didn't, like changing the DNS numbers to 8.8.8.8 and changing the MTS numbers from 1500 to 14-something or other.
Sounds like he tried those things.

Guys I have something to share. I've had the PS4 since launch and the download speeds have ALWAYS been crappy. I've got a 50/25Mbps internet but my downloads are usually around 500KB-1MB. I tried everything, using public DNS, changing ports, port forwarding, DMZ, a software on PC to set a proxy server, none of those worked. Until I stumbled upon a page explaining how to get the correct MTU settings for your PS4. Finding the right number + using a public DNS absolutely did it for me. Downloads blazing @ 6MB/s, even reaching 7MB sometimes. In 3 years with the PS4 I've never had downloads like this.

The only thing is, the page is in portuguese, there's obviously a tutorial in english somewhere, but I'm lazy :P

Here it is for those who wanna give it a try (use google translator, it should work just fine) http://www.nerdspot.com.br/2015/gam...na-psn-em-10-minutos-tutorial-para-ps3-e-ps4/

Edit: well since this is really useful information, I'll make a new thread.

a few weeks ago my PS4's online became wonky - it could access the store and the browser, but could not load the friends list, what's new took forever to load, Bloodborne and DSII always gave me that 'you are offline' message whatnot

DMZ didn't work, port forwarding didn't work, rebuilding the database, restoring licenses didn't work.

Then I stumbled upon that MTU fix everyone was trying back in Dec 2014 when PSN came back up from being ddosed

MTU to 1473 worked for me. There is actually a more scientific way of finding your sweet spot MTU, but I settled on that and everything is working perfectly now.

Don't think that just because you already tried setting it to anywhere in the 14xx range that you have exhausted your options - my console is working now 1473 but I've read that once I set it to, say 1474 my connection will be back to nowheresville.

I was only having some semi slow download speeds on my PS4 over WiFi...So I installed Powerline Adapters so I could use a network cable instead and my PS4 is blazing fast now compared to what it was..

Those Power line Adapters are awesome if your electrical wiring will allow you to use them...

It's the one component they seem to consistently cheap out on. Performance has been terrible on every WiFi-enabled gaming product they've released.

So no, no chance

I went out and bought a cable, hooked it up and all my problems are solved.

Now how do I get Google to have "just get a wired connection and all your problems will vanish" as the simple top answer when searching these issues?

Thank you for everyone who contributed thier helpful answers, now I can start to discover this new machine :)

Speaking of which, I've turned down the controllers light bar brightness....what else should I do that I may easily overlook?
