New PS4 system update v2.03 arrives later tonight

Nice to see "your" ps4 is even worse than the ps3.

Mines and most others downloaded fine, maybe your internet connection is the problem.
PSN speeds have been terrible for quite a few members since the 2.0 update. Sony has implemented some sort of throttle that has the connection jumping all over the place. It has affected people in the exact same way across multiple ISP's.

are you guys sure its sony and not the CDN (akamai, etc.)? although its possible that if the CDN is throttling its because sony has only ponied up enough dough for a specific amount of bandwidth

Downloaded the update, seems to be working fine..downloading Injustice God's among Us Ultimate edition right now since its a free game..downloaded 4.76gb then I see in the background the game is 21.99gb so I have to wait for the game to finish downloading before I can turn off the PS4

I downloaded an update file for PES at the same time that did 1.1GB in 4 minutes on the same PS4, yet it took over 2 hours to download that 200MB update. Sony's servers have just always been shit for things like this

this is still not fixed u_u, cmon sony fix this

This has been happening to me as well while playing Dragon Age Inquisition with the paper sculpture theme. If you return to the OS while playing the game you get the glitch.

It's hard to say for sure. The speed fluctuations didn't happen prior to 2.0 but it could be a coincidence and the CDN started throttling at that time. I can start multiple downloads and get them downloading at the same speed but I can't get a single download to run beyond a certain speed. I went from hitting 12 megabytes per second to running 300-500k per sec. on average. Nothing has changed on my end and everything else downloads as it always has. I know it isn't my isp since they have no monthly bandwidth cap and offer 1gb/1gb connections with unlimited bandwidth for $70 a month.

i know changing dns often results in you getting routed to different download servers. does doing that affect your download speeds? if so...i'd say its probably like a specific set of servers that are slow. don't want to accuse anyone of throttling without concrete proof though :)

i remember for the longest time i had issues with ps3 downloads. then when i got the ps4 i started getting better speeds. it seems to vary though. sometimes i've getting good speeds and sometimes it feels like i might be being throttled.

rest/standby downloading has made me pay less attention tbh...kind of slipping under the rug for me. i know it sucks really bad for those going digital. :\

The PS4 web browser memory management needs a lot of work. I get frequent 'Out of System Memory' messages when attempting to access a stream on Twitch.

In fact, the only way I can get Twitch to work in the PS4 web browser is to type in the stream URL manually, press 'Go', then immediately open the 'Search' bar using triangle (which causes the keyboard pop up on the screen). The page will load and the stream will then begin playing in the background. I now must wait for a full minute to allow the browser become stable before it is safe to close the search menu and watch the stream.

This method has been somewhat consistent with me. But jeez, why did I have to figure that out in the first place? Hope this update addresses these issues.

Hilariously enough, the PS4 browser runs on the same core as the drastically better Wii U browser (Netfront NX v3). It's just that Sony literally didn't care about it's functionality and slap-dashed something together to support digital manuals and for some reason let people attempt to use it for things it just seriously can't handle. I mean, we'll completely discount that the Wii U has a much better human interface for a browser and simply focus on the fact that the drastically less powerful machine has a browser that preforms way better. It's pretty hilarious how half-baked just about everything besides the actual in-game experience is on the PS4. My Wii U boots into a disk-based game faster than my PS4, and people make fun of the Wii U's boot time all the time. Well, the Wii U was seriously that bad when the system launched, but it's vastly better now. I haven't seen nearly the same amount of incremental improvement in the PS4 that the Wii U had in it's first year of software updates.

Anyone having issues with your friends avatars showing up under What's New or under games that you have that they play? I was just on my girlfriend's PS4 and they all show up as a default avatar. It wasn't like this before the firmware update. The trophy tracker for some of her recently played game tiles are missing too.

I'll ask her if she wants to rebuild the database later if it bothers her.

I used to get that glitch on the theme as well, until I switched to the 20th anniversary theme. Thought the GPU was overheating or something

Nope, changing the DNS does absolutely nothing for this issue. I have tried just about everything possible on my end to fix the issue, and nothing has worked. I really have a hard time believing it isn't related to something Sony did with the 2.0 firmware. It's not like this issue started around the time of 2.0 or anything, as downloading was fine right before installing 2.0, and went to shit as soon as 2.0 was installed. It also happens every single time I download something, it's not some kind of random thing. Downloads start at around 400KBps and stay there for about one to two minutes, and then jump up to the 6-7MBps that I normally got for a few seconds, and then right back down to 400KBps. It rides that roller coaster of alternating download speeds every few seconds for the entire download. A 100MB update file has gone from taking about 10-15 seconds to taking about 1.5 to 2 minutes. It's truly incredible the impact that it has.

About the only thing I haven't tried is installing the original HDD to see if there is something funky going on with HDD seek times while downloading since I have a 7200RPM drive installed. I highly doubt it, but you never know what could get screwed up with a firmware.

most of my downloads are down in rest mode while im at work. donna need to try redownloading one of the ps+ or f2p games i've delayed and see how download speed are.

real bummer that psn has so many issues. let's pray it doesn't meltdown on x-mas morning...

If you get a chance try to download something and let us know how it goes. I'm curious how widespread the issue is. It seems to be hit-or-miss since some people say they've never had good download speeds on PSN.

as more people report having this its starting to look like a common problem, i would be very happy if other people would try to reproduce this and share the results.

Why not rest mode?

I have Verizon FIOS (85/85). Ever since 2.0, my download speeds haven't been the same. I use to average 5 to 10 megaybytes per second on all downloads, regardless of their size and for the entire duration of the download. It would only take about 5 or so minutes to download 4 gigs. Today, that same 4 gig file took about 15 to 20 minutes.

I assume that this is how Sony is handling the huge influx of new users before adding more servers to their arsenal.

Anyone else seeing a bug where the "Friends who play this" list on a game's live screen is filled with blank avatars? The actual friends list is fine, but if I scroll down on an individual game to see who plays this all the avatars are blank.

Every one of my friend's avatars on a per game basis is blank, except for one for some reason - though that one is definitely based in Europe.

Thanks for the input. I hope this is temporary since I can't see myself ever buying digital with these speeds. Having a good connection running at half bandwidth or less is frustrating. Neither Steam nor Live have this problem so they need to pony up the cash for more servers/bandwidth.

I get maybe 300-400KB/s where as I can get close to 10x that speed on other devices. Good to know I'm not crazy. last night i was ready to throw the ps4 in the trash after waiting almost two hours to update a 200MB file. This console has provided more disappointment than anything else. I really hope Sony announces a big update at this
December event.

100/10 time warner cable.

Downloaded contrast which is about 2.5gb including patches. Took approx. 8m45s. Obviously not maxing out my connection but it's ok. ~ 28Mbps

when I run test Internet connection on the ps4 I get 46.5Mbps and 6.2 Mbps

Database Rebuild didn't do much for me, except screw up the order of apps/games I had on my main menu - but I vaguely remember this was working in 2.02.

Running out of ideas outside of deleting everything and restart, but not fond of re-downloading 500GB of app data on my PS4.

I think the internet test is not accurate. Always had 35/8 on using their test. Before and after 2.0. My actual speed was way higher before, as previously mentioned, but now is not even what the internet test says. It's been so bad downloading files that at times I would do the internet test just to see if there was something wrong with my connection.

Sony is doing something purposefully to limit bandwidth usage. I think something similar to what Verizon was doing to Netflix before Netflix paid the bribe fee Verizon demanded

Hmm, no idea. It's probably something that'll work itself out. At least you know you're not the only with the issue. Are you missing the trophy tracker for some of your recently played games too?

If Rebuilding the Database didn't do anything, I'd probably just wait and see. Has to be something network related.

It only took sony 11 months to add rudimentary usb mp3 support. Give them a few more years for the rest.

The cynic inside of me has said since launch that the only reason that feature wasn't available from launch is because Sony wanted to encourage people interested in playing music on their PS4 during gameplay or in general to pay for Music Unlimited

I think it's a safe best to say the rest won't even happen

AFAIK akamai is “you get what you pay for“ and they deliver downloads for many, many more companies.
For example they handled the downloads for Apple, too, and people praised Apple many years for delivering ios updates instantly and fast over recent years.
I guess some parts for this are hard coded in the ps4 os and they changed this with 2.0 so to save some money.
