New Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection images

A lot of stinkers, but enough gems to make this a worthy purchase.

There's no more than half a dozen "average" games there, the rest are either good, great, or some of the greatest masterpieces of all time. I have to ask though, who in their right mind thinks those filters re a good idea? Honestly how are those shots an improvement? They destroy all the charm of the original pixel art.

I own most of these games several times, but hey I can't turn down a chance to own another version of Sonic the Hedgehog, no one can ever have enough copies of that game.

Honest question: couldn't they release this as a single title on XBLA and PSN?
MS has been cutting down on retro ports. They'd have to be reimagined like R-Type Dimensions or Bionic Commando Rearmed and released all separately.

Terminator, Batman, Godzilla and The Incredible Hulk too I think
Batman and Godzilla were both sufficiently edited out of the later two versions of the game. The Terminator/Hulk thing is still in the last version of the ROM and could be problematic. Spider-Man is definitely in there, complete with Marvel trademark at the beginning of the game.

This wouldn't be a problem if SEGA had kept the source code, but they didn't.

SEGA keeping 1990 era source code? :lol :lol Yer, that'll be the day, I'd be surprised if they have anything left from that period, they're by far and away my favourite gaming company but by God is their history littered with fuckups of monumental proportions.

Heh, that's a damn shame. I'd rather have these games on the HDD ready to be fired up anytime.

It would be like having Genesis channel already full of awesome games.

They definitely don't, but they're hardly alone among Japanese developers in losing/ not keeping the source code for games from that era. Few devs have their shit together the way Nintendo does, a fact that was just as true then as it is today.

I hate the filter, but it's hard to deny the quality of some of those games. I have the Megadrive collection on PS2 though and that contains most of these games sans filter, so I'm sticking to that.

/edit: just read that the filter can be turned off, thank God.

Those filters truly show off the power of the HD consoles.

Yes. It takes 2 processors just to add the pudding effect to the graphics. Another core and a half to match the 68000 heart of fire.

Ewww! What did they do to the classic Sega games?

Give me the original sprites please, not this blurry mess.

This is why I hang on to my old 32" SDTV.

Mickey Mania & Jungle Strike are 3rd-party.
Quackshot(and MM as well) are licensed.

Holy shit, Beyond Oasis? I'm in.

This is the truth.

BTW: Rambo was also in Revenge of Shinobi. Course at the time RoS came out Sega actually had the license to that one(since they did Rambo III for the Genesis around the same time)

Needless to say along with Manbat and Spiderdude, Rambone became bald and lost his trademark bandanna.

What surprises me is that still nobody has gotten in Sega's face for all of the sound effects they're ripped from various movies to put in their games.

Dear GOD MY EEEYES!!

How can there be such horrible filters programmed in this world? It looks incredibly bad. Beyond terrible. I have chills in the spine just thinking THERE WILL BE people playing with those on and actually ENJOYING it. Heretics.

Who in the hell OKed releasing this screenshot? Seriously, do BackBone's/SEGA's PR department even look at the shots they release. What in the hell is even going on in this shot?

I love the game list but I hope I can bare the pain of playing it with those filters on :(

I guess I can always turn them off ;p

Why would you? They can be turned off. Still doesn't stop me from hating BackBone for pissing all over my childhood by releasing these shots.

Sega, I'm so glad that you keep going to Backbone fucking Entertainment as a cost-cutting measure, but perhaps you were unaware that there's a company in Japan called M2 who just so happens to be really fucking good at porting and recoding old games. They may cost a little bit more, but they don't put out abortions like this.

Well the filters can be turned off so its not a big deal.

That being said, I think i'm getting Sega Genesis Collection PSP version for Christmas anyway...which seems a better buy for portable genesis classics.

Now an HD system Sega Saturn + Dreamcast collection. THAT would be awesome. I mean Nights, Christmas Nights, Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter 1-3, Shining Force 3 (all sections translated to english), Dynamite Cop, Daytona USA 1 & 2001 dreamcast ver, plus lots of stuff im sure im forgetting...that would be great.

Not sure if its even technically possible at this point, but still great.

I need Castlevania Bloodlines!!!

It doesn't want to appear on VC and there's only freaking Sega games collection. How about a collection Konami?

It's feasible from a technical standpoint, but it will never happen.
Saturn and DC games don't have the familiarity and public consciousness of Gen/MD so Sega probably doesn't find it financially feasible bring out.

That would be great. Too bad Sega likes to burn anything associated with its past. So they disband their old teams and throw away the source code.

But I'm sure Backbone will be there in 2012 to grab the rom dumps and add their amazing filters. Can't wait to see what Virtua Fighter 2 looks like with pudding smeared all over the screen.

The lack of Crying/Bio-Hazard Battle is a rather bizarre omission.
Should be interesting what the mystery arcade games are(though if turns out to be some crap from the late 70s + Altered Beast they might as well not even bother.

I can't believe a publisher like Sega would even let those game look like that with the filters...wth,it looks awful, anyone can see that, thank god it can be turned off...and is the first Phantasy Star confirmed or not to be on there...I'm buying if it is,otherwise I might pass.

PS was a Master System game so I doubt it

Phantasy Star was actually released on Mega Drive. As far as I know it's the Master System ROM image though, just in a Mega Drive cart. Since the Mega Drive hardware has most of the Master System hardware, you'd think a Mega Drive emulator wouldn't be very hard to tweak for Master System games, but who knows.

I find the compilation to be too small, surely they could of fit more games onto DVD-9 or BluRay

many of these games are the same that have appeared on the many Sega compliations prior such as Dreamcast's, PSPs, etc and the all the Genesis games that propped up on XBLA and VC are on this disk (Sega published that is)

needs MORE of the OTHER games

loving how the fact that you can turn off the filter somehow justifies how awful it is

Yeah, I don't get why Sega of America act like they've never heard of M2, while they're the go-to team for emulation and retro ports for Sega of Japan.

Oh well. These games are likely all on VC, and that emulation was done by M2. You get what you pay for.

Why do they almost always leave out Sonic CD.....argh.
Because they can't be bothered with Sega CD emulation and don't want to port the PC version again and again for every compilation.

The Sonic CD port on Sonic Gems Collection wasn't very good, either (it was sloppy as hell). I'd rather they don't try and port that version, thanks.

What was wrong with it (aside from the lack of JP/EU music)?

Sega should give the fans what they really want....... an arcade compilation

Daytona USA 1 + 2
Golden Axe: Return Of Death Adder (4P Online co-op)
Spider-Man (4p)
After Burner II (my 32x is missing a cable, I need this game badly)
Super Hang On
Outrun
Virtua Fighter 1, 2, 3

it time to make use of their Dreamcast library onto DLC
