new Super Mario Galaxy video (GDC)

So it's not ok for me to dislike the look of Mario Galaxy, or to not enjoy a lot of the recent Mario games, but it's perfectly acceptable for you to convince me that your disdain for Jak 2 is reasonable?
Hypocricy.

No, because Anihawk thinks the game is shit, whereas you don't like Mario just for the character. Different things.

There is nothing charming about taking a perfectly good platforming series and adding guns, grittiness, and a gruff voice to a previously mute main character.

Jak II removed whatever charm the first game had. Naughty Dog thought they could deliver the best sci-fi story ever told and failed to make a video game.

There's a video of one of the guys talking about Jak 3, and how they wanted to put a story into a platformer, how in Mario 64 there wasn't a goal except getting a cake from Peach at the end. These guys completely and 100% miss the point of platformers specifically, and video games in general.

Uncharted looks good, but only because it looks like Indianna Jones of Persia.

But what's charming about taking a perfectly good platforming series and adding dinosaurs, campiness, and a somewhat effeminate 60 year old male voice to a previously mute main character?

....

Super Mario World or Secret Rings?

Anihawk doesn't like Jak 2 because he doesn't like the story/setting. Apparently he doesn't care that the gameplay was a huge step up from the original J&D.

The gameplay wasn't a huge step up from the original or even a step up at all because of the story/setting. Their focus on the story was what ruined a good platforming series. The platforming IN the game was nice, but it was too ****ing sparse.

Not sure where your getting that from -- Jak 2's missions were split around 50/ 50 between platforming and other crap, about the same ratio as the original.

Point made.

The only memorable platforming segments from Jak II were:

The mountain/green area with the boxes that you had to hit to create platforms
Storming the fortress
Some other third thing that must've come late in the game, just so this post seems more complete.

And that's it. Jak and Daxter was essentially a platforming game the whole way through. And it had warp points for ****'s sake. Jak II had you running back and forth in a shitty-ass city where there was only ONE way back and forth for most of the game. I can't believe this game didn't get taken to task for that. Unbelievably poor design.

Oh, and while your tag under your name does do pretty well to sum you up, to be honest I'd rather just not read your trashy posts anymore at all. I'm pretty much done with replying to your asstacular attempts at wit and humor, while adding absolutely nothing constructive to the debate I started at all.

I think Ani's got a pretty good wit...

Did we ever hear anything about the coop? Thought it was going to bring back the bros. or something like that. We need Super Mario Bros. Galaxy.

I remember Miyamoto mentioning something like they hoping to have one player controlling mario and the other controlling the star pointer.

Personally I don't think it will make it into the game, just doesn't seem to suit 3D Mario, but you never know.

You can challenge Jak 2 as much as you want, but it's not going to change the fact it was very well recieved and is enjoyed by a lot of gamers and critics alike. So what if it wasn't so much as a platformer as the prequel? It's called an evolution of a series. It's a game that changed with the times. It was a natural progression of the series and marked an important time in last gens history.

So is Halo, but the hate/dislike/disdain for it is equally big as it's popularity. If you're arguing sales or media reception to bolster a game quality in regards to playability and mechanics you really have no argument to begin with which is sad. Just accept that not everyone sees things the same way as you.

That sounds pretty lame. They really should try a coop with both Mario and Luigi helping each other through the stage. Perhaps in the future.

How many times in this thread have people asked for Luigi to be playable as well? Add another to the tally if so. :)

I hear he may be playable in Super Paper Mario, if that's any consolation.:)

Wait, what? Strikers is an awesome multiplayer game.

QFT

I wanted to say the same thing, but thought I will read through first. My friends who all couldn't give a shit about anything Nintendo related, except maybe 90's classics, all really wanted to play the game, when they saw it in my pile. Actually i kept refusing, because they always start taking the piss out of what I spend my money on. But after I let them, they freakin' loved it. And to add to the irony, they are all football fanatics, who play PES all the time. So that was a big surprise.

And if it matters, Anihawk is the one of the most interesting poster's on GAF. And who's sarcasm and wit, always bring a smile on my face.

I used to think your dislike of Metroid Prime, was you being sarcastic. But you actually hate the game. That is really strange, and I guess, unlike you or your taste, in my restricted perception.

The Wispy Scoundrel said:
Eh? Shouldn't you be saying this to Anihawk? He was the one who clearly stated earlier that it is an actual 'fact' that Jak II sucks.

People are allowed their own opinions on everything except Jak 2 sucking. It's a fact. It was so obvious, Moses didn't even bother reading it off the tablet.

I think that if Haven City had been removed, that alone would have made Jak II twice as good. I just couldn't finish the game. Having to drive those stupid hovercars around that giant city dodging Krimzon Guards was fun maybe once, then became ridiculously repetitive. I haven't even tried Jak III yet, Jak II just thoroughly disappointed me.

Anyway, insert some random gushing praise of Super Mario Galaxy here. Now that game looks incredible.

What the hell has this thread come to?!

This game looks awesome, am I the only one who sees the huge replay value with this game? It seems as if you can take multiple paths through space. I wonder if it will be level-based, or literally just a long treck across space.

It would be wild if you just kept going and going and going with just occasional save points..

Actually that would be sort of revolutionary i think.

Actually, that idea sounds rather fun. It would almost recapture the style of the older Mario games; you just keep going forward ever further until you reach the end. To work properly, though, it would have to be really freaking long.

The sense of distance would be unmatched, though.

One thing that's really awesome in the trailer is how Mario's body has this cartoony elasticity, it reminds me of Mickey Mouse style animation. There was a little of it in SM64, like when you punch your hand grows, but it looks tons better in SMG so far.

The video rules, Anihawk rules, Jak II sucked, let's move on people.

Dude, they released Mario Party every year since Mario Party 4 was out (well, except last year, I think).

My point, good sir, was that each Mario Party game released was an very different experience, unlike the slew of minor Street Fighter II upgrades and most of the Madden series. That was the only point I was trying to make -- yes, a new Mario Party is released nearly yearly, but each is an entirely new game.

You're not the only one, but your part of a very small minority.

Doesn't seem like a mini game at all to me. Looks vast and varied. The uniqueness of the design just adds to my interest. It's not mario 64, and it's not going to mimic that games structure, but i think it could have that kind of scope.

It would be most welcome.

I'm not even after any extra playable skills or anything, I just like the colour green. And the voice.

Geeze it seems you forget people on this message board are fans of the art, not the business.

Nothing wrong in admiring the art. But never forget that this art in games is, for most of the time, a means to an end, not the other way around. And that end is profit, the true reason behind any healthy company.

My point is: Nintendo would have a hard time moving as many copies of the same game if it was called Super Roberto Galaxy and featured a Spanish electrician as main the character instead of an Italian plumber. The branding wouldn't be as strong.

To this day, nobody has found a sure formula for creating instantly recognizable characters - it's hit and miss (with lots, lots of misses), so when companies find a working brand on their hands it's the jackpot: they will cling to the brands and whore them out in every conceivable way as long as they remain profitable.

Mickey Mouse? Dragon Ball Z? Spiderman? Gundam? Aren't they whored too much? Shouldn't DC Comics simply kill all of their characters and start anew already? I'd love to see that, but my reasoning tells me it'll never happen while the things are still selling.

Holy jumping ****ing shit balls. I have a feeling by the time this generation ends everyone will have forgotten what a mini game actually is since people like you keep widening the definition. By 2010 a mini game will just be a condensed term for "game I don't like".

To try and keep this on topic I will say the textures for this game in particular are excellent. They remind me of construction paper.

how in any possible, reasonable, logical and realistic way does SMG resemble a minigame?

do you guys think there will be a world big enough to resemble the 1st painting you go in on mario 64 ?

something large with grass and the such, maybe a hill or two even with other things to explore within?

or will they all be small like we have seen so far on all the vids?
