New to anime, what should I watch?

I would probably avoid Cowboy Bebop, its style of storytelling and unappealing characters and characters that make you not really care for them makes it a pretty ungood story.

Anyway, Id suggest these three, I guess.
Guilty Crown - Good action, visuals, and music, really one of the lead anime of the decade and is pretty good. Definitely look into it for its special powers, visuals, and storytelling.

K - Possibly one of the most explosive and action intense new anime of the year and bound to be even bigger, excellent music, character designs, story, and world.

Angel Beats - Hilarious and emotional, and really memorable for its short run, check it out.

Also suggest Death Note like everyone else, and Naruto or Hunter x Hunter if you really want some long anime.
This user may or may not be a work of fiction. Be advised.

I can get behind Angel Beats. It's about kids in the afterlife coping with the fact that they're dead and have regrets. The dub is kind of awful though.

First post nailed it

Last great anime was Cowboy Beebop, after that....I don't know.... Death Note?

90% of anime today are chibis, harem and fanservice, etc.

Kind of...flabbergasted no one's posted it yet...

Nothing that stand out of the rest Cowboy Beebop, Evangelion are landmarks

Echoing the sentiments about Cowboy Bebop. Incredible show, easily my favorite anime ever and I highly recommend you to watch it.

Something for everyone - good listenin' for the whole family!
More -utterly sincere- recommendations from off the beaten path:

Chirin no Suzu/Ringing Bell (cute little anthropomorphic lambs!)
Belladonna of Sadness (groovy 70s psychedelia!)
The Rose of Versailles (fabulous 70s melodrama & gender bending!)

Gauche the Cellist (because the 70s were the best!)

This show sounded intriguing so I tried watching it, but all the quick cuts and camera movements made me nauseous so I turned it off before the end of the first episode even though I was curious to see where the show went. Does the show get better with the cuts and/or is it good enough that I should suck it up and try watching it again?

Suck it up and just watch the movie.

You're better off watching the Movie as while the quick cuts are still there at the beginning, it flow's much better without all the episode breaks. Plus it add's a couple of scenes including one very important one after the credits. It's definitely worth giving it another chance.

Come join us in the community anime thead :D

I've tried posting there before but it just moves too quick for me, I think. I have a hard time keeping up with any one discussion. :/

Cool, I'll see if I can find the movie. I had been watching the show on Crunchyroll before.

Oh god, how could I forget to recommend

If you talk about animation as an artform with the potential to express something profound, this is it.

Don't worry about trying to keep up! Just post what you want and read what you can :)

The only anime series I've watched are .hack//SIGN when it came out long ago, really loved the slow-burning story, unique atmosphere and music.

I watched the first half of Steins;gate recently and loved the story, though some of the typical cliché characters really got on my nerves (especially the classic annoying high-pitched little girl -.-).

What do you think would be great series to begin with? And why? I've heard great things about Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the shell, Noir, Madlax, etc. I just don't know where to begin!! =D

EDIT: Please disregard my thread title fail.

DEADMAN WONDERLAND

Ignore everything anyone said in here and just listen to me. I got you.

Watch these anime:

Berserk
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Akira

If you don't like any of these than you should just pack up your shit and walk out the Anime door. There is no fucking reason to bother.

You should listen to The Pillows.

And then you should watch FLCL.

Well, listen to the pillows up until 2002 or so, before they started their quick descent into suckdom. And watch FLCL.

I'm going to have to dig through this thread. I've always loved anime, but since the mid-whateverthelastdecadewascalled-s it's been really hard for me to find anything I like. Only thing I've watched recently was Kids on the Slope, which was great until it petered out in the end (which seems to be incredibly common in anime).

Can't believe people are suggesting FLCL to someone brand new to anime. It takes a very specific kind of person to get that shit from the get-go; 99% of people need to warm up to that.

For someone brand new to anime, I'd recommend:

1. Fullmetal Alchemist
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
4. Samurai Champloo
5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Needs more Cowboy Bebop.

Evangelion is pretty cool too.

I use to not like Evangelion (saw it during high school), but after watching the first two Rebuild movies recently. I've changed my mind.
