New to PC gaming - what to expect?

Enjoy spending a week figuring out why your game is giving you an error.

Seriously, you'll spend a lot of time making some games "work."

The button you're looking for looks like this.

The latter half of the 90s wasn't that bad either.

The last time I remember having to actually invest work to get a game to run was in DOS 6.22.

It's an issue that some of the console only gamers like to play up, as if the PC is just one giant clusterfuck in terms of getting games running properly. It's really not, and it smacks of petty jealousy to suggest that you'll be spending weeks trying to get games working.

Yep.

The sad irony to this argument is that the PS3 is easily the most frustrating, clunky and intrusive piece of hardware I've ever owned. In terms of cutting into my availale game time, at least. I like the PS3, it does a lot of things well and it's my favourite current gen console, but the idea that it's a more convenient system to game on than a PC honestly feels kind of silly to me.

He said SOME games, and he is correct, SOME games you will spend lots and lots of time to get to run properly. People are still 1 year later trying to get TERA running without the fps drop issues that showed up in open beta.

Like I said earlier I'm still trying to fix TERA also, tried a lot of stuff, no result, also trying to fix Tomb Raider Anniversary (shadows + AA = no shadows 90% of the time), haven't solved that one yet either.

What I found is this, in future when you upgrade buy what you WANT and not what you NEED, believe it or not it will save you money in the long run. I'll explain, you buy a 660ti now in future are you going to be jealous of someone with a 670 or 680? Answer is normally yes. So spend that little bit more and get what you want. Obviously there is a limit don't go over budget for the sake of it but its important to keep in mind.

I know it sounds stupid and frivolous but it has worked for me.

That depends on basic google and problem solving skills. If those exceed a 4th grade level people manage fine.

I have been PC gaming since mid 2012 (not long admittedly) and the two or three at most issues I've had have been solved within ten seconds.

These only related to older games and editing an ini file to set up 1920x1080 resolution.

People seem to think PC gaming isn't very robust and is fraught with issues; I haven't experienced this yet.

So last week I downloaded this from Steam on a whim while I was home sick, and damn, that's the best gaming money I've spent in a long time. I probably should have taken all the praise it got on the Bombcast more seriously at a sooner date.

As for more recent comments: did someone really say multiplayer is better on a console? Really? LOL, ok.
To be fair consoles have far less hacking/glitching.

At least it was that way when i was big into PC gaming many many years ago.

It has certainly lessened, but there are more ways than hacking to ruin multiplayer games that apply to all platforms.

Dedicated servers are absolutely worth the "tradeoff" as well.

As others have said, you'll probably end up amassing a vast collection of games you'll either never play or won't play for a very long time. That's the snare of the Steam sale.

Mods are nice, high res, high FPS gaming even more so.

Interface is a matter of preference, I suppose, but once you get used to keyboard and mouse for games like shooters you will likely never want to go back. For those that work better with the controller, there are many games that have native 360 controller support. For older games with no support, there are keybinding solutions like Xpadder and Joy2key.

Like some have said, sometimes it is a bit of work to get games performing and controlling optimally. Its not always plug and play like the consoles, but a solution is usually a google search away.

I recommend rebuying some of your favorite old console games for it if they are available. It often gives new life to the console games you loved as long as the original port wasn't a complete hackjob. Playing a game like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in 1920x1080 at 60 fps is a thing of beauty.

Prepare for better looking, cheaper games and a massive, uncontrollable backlog :)

This too.

Welcome. You are safe now.

expect to...uhm, playing games?
don't let the "oh it's cheap lemme buy it", you'll end with tons of games and you'll never touch them.
think and then buy. it's not difficult

To those who've said they haven't found issues they couldn't fix...please let me know how I can run realMyst at 60fps on Windows 8. Or run Beyond Good & Evil period.

I'm glad this thread is here, I have a lot of questions about PC gaming. With pretty much everything I like on 360 being on PC I don't know if Microsoft is getting my money next Gen. But I'm pretty in the dark about PC gaming.

How much will I have to spend to get a good gaming PC? People keep telling me to use newegg, but I have no idea what to get. I'd like to start with an already built PC because I don't know anything about building a computer.

How often do I have to update the guts of it/how hard is it going to be to update the PC
if I'm not particularly knowledgeable about how a PC works?

Can you use the 360 controller on most games? A big reason I never jumped into PC gaming is because I don't really like gaming with a keyboard and mouse.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to read this and taking the time to help a clueless GAFer out.

Steam BG&E works fine for me, without doing anything. Occasional water flicker but not a significant amount. Weird.

Do you know what I love about PC gaming? The hardware. You know what I hate about PC gaming? The hardware. I am constantly tweaking, changing, tuning, and upgrading everything. My wallet weeps every month from PC gaming. Sure, the games are cheap but I'm always on a quest to upgrade something on my PC.

Building your own PC might be very frustrating if you don't know anything about it.

Newer games tend to support the 360 controller - Steam even has a category for it I believe. For everything else, you can use something like Pinnacle or Xpadder to map keys and mouse movement to the controller. Probably a pain in the arse if you play a new game every day, but worthwhile if you're sticking with one game for a while.

Build your own PC, happy to help in this thread. Lots of guides and advice. Much better performance per dollar and it's not as difficult as you think.

Depends on what parts you have now, and how powerful you want your pc to be. Can be anywhere from ~600 to thousands of dollars.

With this long console generation, upgrading hasn't been a big deal until recently. A midrange quadcore from ~2009 and a modern GPU is still a very capable computer. Hard to say until we see what the new hardware coming out this summer from Intel/amd/nvidia will be like. I upgraded last summer, but my PC before that was bought in 2008; lasted me quite a while.

Yes you can, and you can use third party software to map keyboard keys to a gamepad if the game doesn't have native support. If you play FPS you'd be annihilated with a gamepad, though. FWIW.

i don't think you need to upgrade every month. a good pc will be fine for 3-4 years

I have to seriously wonder where are all the people who have to constantly troubleshoot PC games?

They fall under one or more of these:

A) Non-PC gamers who have very outdated misconceptions,

B) Console fanboys,

C) Have very poor Google skills and do not belong in front of a computer,

D) Are genuinely unlucky.

I've found that most, if not all, fall under categories A-C.

Expect buying games you'll never play, buying games you didn't know existed five minutes ago, attempting to buy games you already own, and when you do buy games all you play is TF2.

I remember there was a thread that acted as a general how-to guide for buying or making a gaming PC. I'm having trouble finding it though. Can someone post a link?

Ignore that. I'm still rolling with a AMD 5870 just fine. I only just upgraded my CPU to a 3570k from a Q6600 just recently after having it for 4-5 years. Thing was a beast but slow now.

Yeah, I have a 2500k and a ati 6850. I know my CPU should be fine.. worst case I might need to buy a better video card 3 years down the line.

Doesn't mean I can play everything with the best graphics settings, but it will still be more than acceptable and should be better than consoles.

Ah yes my PC brethren. It feels like home in these threads. Welcome to the club/show OP. As most have pointed out, there's a lot of great things about PC gaming. It becomes an artful ritual after a bit.

I just built a PC with the same cpu/gpu as you. I've been in heaven the past two weeks. Welcome aboard. This thread delivers some good recommendations too.

I would highly recommend Sleeping Dogs. It will run essentially maxed out with "high" AA and it will blow your mind. Most visually impressive PC experience I've had in my short time here.

Just as an aside, why are numerous people recommending Sleeping Dogs? Isn't it just a console port? I get that it probably runs a whole lot better but I'm guessing there's more to it if it's gotten over 5 recommendations in this thread in two pages.

There's a massive high res texture pack, but other than that I don't know. It just runs really well and looks really good. edit: love the game itself too :lol

It is an exceptionally well handled port using PC specific features and an HD texture pack but, ultimately, it is the same game but much better looking and performing.

It really is amazing, couple it with some injectors and SweetFX and it looks even better.

Bah, now I've just been reminded that SweetFX and SMAA injector don't work with Windows 8. Why did I install this terrible OS?

Im on Windows 8 and mine work just fine.

When I looked up the issue, I found out that you can only use 1 inject at a time in Windows 8. Fraps breaks it. Even with Fraps not running, I have been unable to get it to work. I'm not sure what the culprit is, exactly. Steam overlay, maybe? Tried for nearly an hour to get it to work with DmC last week. No luck. Dark Souls performance is also notably worse on Windows 8...it locks at 15fps a lot more than it did on Windows 7. So far this OS has been a pain.

Hmm odd, sounds like it might be hit and miss. Mine always works without a hitch (unless of course I go overboard) I have 2 7870's, are you on Nvidia? Overall I quite like Windows 8, I might just be lucky because everything has pretty much gone without a hitch.

Single GTX 680

(and just so no one complains that I'm going off-topic, this discussion has a point. This is an example of optional troubleshooting/tweaking to get the most out of games, even though it's not necessary)
