What makes a device a PC to you?

My arguments were clearly stated from the very beginning but you failed at basic comprehension.
Plus just leaving this bonus "here":

"Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 requires over 110 GB of storage, typically taking 1 to 5+ hours to install depending on internet speed and disc usage. Crucial tip: For physical discs, disconnect from the internet to install from the disc (~45–60 mins) rather than downloading the whole game"

Did you double post only to tell me this lol ?

What do you don't understand when I am telling you that I consider modern consoles PCs exactly ? I don't like these "consoles" because of all of this PC shit. They are not consoles anymore.

Have you ever put a cartridge in a MegaDrive and turned on the console ? That's a console experience.

Better create a new thread for you not cry??

So excluding all consoles that waste our time, consoles don't waste our time. Got it. Noted.

I can install full fat x86 Linux and/or Windows = PC

Good point.
THIS. plain and simple. oh...and lots of expnability. A PC is more than a gaming device. A gaming device cant be a PC. sure it can play PC games but, who is doing productivitry tasks on a console with a couple USB slots, no PCI slots, no thunderbolt ports etc.?

You reek of desperation. My point was clear. You didn't read the initial post correctly and answered in haste, now you are trying to save face. It's okay to be wrong, you will survive.

Maybe you have some past trauma about console vs PC, but not everybody needs to classify things as consoles and PCs the way you do.

Whatever makes your FOMO better.

I have both so who has a trauma??

Expandability is not a "requirement" as different PCs have different levels of this. Motherboards can have different numbers of PCI, RAM slots, etc. Or none like Steam Deck and some laptops where "everything" is soldered on the MOBO.

The "personal" part matters the most, where I have control to customize the device.

Not necessarily expand-ability, because there can be size or power limitations based on form factor, but I'm free to install what I want outside of games rather than a gated storefront, I can implement hacky solutions because I can access core files of the OS, and I'm free to install whole other OSs that exist because the device doesn't block their support.

If the Helix lets me install Linux, and the Gabecube lets me install Windows, then they're PCs. Otherwise, I'd say they're more of a hybrid.

Different numbers means that there are *numbers* and thus - expendability. Yes, it is a requirement but it can be different depending on a form factor (see laptops).

Or none like Steam Deck
Nope. Not a "PC", precisely cause you're locked in on it h/w wise.

Yes a PC, just like laptops where the only upgrade "possible" is the HDD/SSD.
No, it's not the only upgrade possible on a laptop. RAM can be upgraded there, you can have an external GPU via TB, and you can connect an external monitor essentially turning the laptop into a computer case.
But yes, laptops are limited, and are thus also frowned upon by people who like PCs.

Like I said before, there are laptops with RAM soldered on the motherboard. And you can connect external monitor on Deck in the USB-C.

Might see if I can Jailbreak my pro in the future and install Linux. Cant believe its running Steam etc on a PS5.

We got the Playstation PC before the Xbox one, jokes of course.

The only real difference between a pc and everything else, is that you can watch porn on a pc.

In that sense, the old vhs tapes you found under your parents bed at 12 yo were indeed a PC.

Wait, why not? I've used the Deck via USB-C just fine. Per google:

"Yes, the Steam Deck fully supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP 1.4) via its USB-C port"

Also, saying laptops are not PCs is a crazy take.

PC is about freedom for me.

This means some hardware can be more or less of a PC. A laptop is less of a PC than a desktop. A Mac is less of a PC than a Pentium. And a Windows 12 computer is less of a PC than a Windows 95 computer.

The more freedom you get the more of a PC it is. Since the PC name is not owned by a single company, what makes a PC is not that defined.

What i know for sure is that Microsoft is becoming more and more anti-PC over the decades.

Damn, shouldnt have sold my day one PS5. That would have been fun to tinker with.

PS5 is officially a PC. haha

It's just an AMD system ..the only thing preventing it form being a PC is software, which this Linux port fixes.

The PS5 can run Windows 11 if someone is willing to write a few custom drivers for it

I knew my Steam Deck was a PC when that random performance tracker appeared in the top corner of a game for no reason, and then I couldn't find how to turn it off and had to Google where in the settings it was.

-Not what? I said the same thing.

-I said the oposite.

Less how?? It runs all Win 95 programs and much more.

You can't watch porn on phones, consoles that have browser/homebrews, Macs, tablets??

The question is backwards. What makes a console not a PC?

Once upon a time there were no blurred lines, but now consoles blur the line by offering features traditionally associated with PCs.

I don't care for the label. It's like asking "what is an electronic device to you' it's so broad and could be so much you could even say a PS5 Is a pc.

What is a mobile phone to you? similar question.

But on a personal level I think anything with a mouse and keyboard as the main interface.

I consider mac as a PC too, laptops as well. But most are barely upgradable. Many windows laptop too you can only upgrade SSD and only few allow for Ram, wifi card. So ideally PC Desktop where you can upgrade components and obviously run different application and do non gaming task. The reason next Xbox is considered a PC is because it will apparently run steam, epic, ea and other game store just like games running on Windows 11 PC. I think even the Xbox version will actually be a PC game with default profile settings.

Then those are pc.
It is actually quite easy you should be able to understand.
Here is a ancient roman computer from the 1st century

The wording just sticked. You can do pretty much everything (send emails, write essays, read news) on your smartphone. Even my workspace I can probably stream on my phone and work on there.

But is a smartphone a PC?
Do you buy your Playstation for personal computing?

Are the arcade machines from the 90s that different? They were just PCs running Windows with quarter slots and joysticks, but I don't think most people thought of them as PCs.

Arcade cabinets were powered by PCB that ran game data directly off the ROM. Without any overhead like Windows until the mid 2000's when hardware kind of started to be based off consoles and consumer PC parts. They were as far removed from PC as could be.

So, here we are. More and more news is ramping up for next gen and the biggest point of contention right now is " Is the next Xbox a PC?"

What makes a PC a PC to you?

For me, its really simple.

If it is PC hardware and I can format the hard drive and install which ever OS I want, its a PC. If it is a closed environment in any way. It is not a PC.

What do you think, Gaf. What makes a PC a PC to you?
Simple, i have a false sense of superiority while playing and think all other gaming forms are below me.

Bam, PC right there.

It's a deep question, and it can also be framed as: what defines a PC versus a console?
A console is primarily designed for gaming, although it also supports other forms of entertainment such as Netflix, Spotify, and similar services. Its main focus is entertainment.
A PC can do all of that as well, but it goes much further. It's a versatile machine used for tasks like working with spreadsheets, creating applications, and many other forms of productivity and creativity. Gaming is just one of its many functions.
So, while a console is mainly built for gaming and entertainment, a PC is a multipurpose tool where gaming is not the primary focus, but rather one of many capabilities.
