New Tony Hawk AW screens (X360)

Tony Hawk has never had very good graphics....THUG 2 looks awful. Not surprising that they're putting no effort into a launch game port of a graphically underwhelming series. I remember when the first screens of THUG 2 came out, everyone on the forum made fun of those too. It's a reality check: lazy developers aren't going to suddenly produce amazing graphics on 360. Dreamcast had marginally improved PS1 ports of TH 1 and 2, and I imagine that's like what 360 will get until it's developed for PS3. Playstation is always the base platform for Tony Hawk.

THPS2 on DC is actually drastically improved graphically*, and the port was done by Treyarch (who also did THPS2X). They should obviously get to take over the series, if they're even around anymore.

* Perhaps the improvement is only drastic to a nut that has gotten all gaps on both versions.

If Activision thinks I'm going to pay $60 for a fucking xbox port they've got a surprise coming
... what's the surprise?

This game looks assy. Count me out. -1

Xbox.

One. Point. Five. :lol

Seriously though it's not fair to put up a picture of a fantasy setting (Shadow..) and try to compare it to a real life modern environment.

So what do developers think that adding bloom filtering automatically makes a game look more "next-gen"? I'm starting to get really tired of the bloom affect as it is making some developers extremely lazy.

Bring on RE5 please and it had better look like the renders.

Okay, I'm sorry, but that's not even possible to do.

There's a ton of things in these games that are not possible :P It's not really a simulation!

Also, adding 1000 of anything.

see problem is x360 generally has higher ram latency than ps2, and unless game is threaded and optomized for it, cpu only marginally faster. I don't expect much more from x360, maybe this, or less but massive clone charactors.

so, uh, i know tony hawk games are good sellers... but wont a game this shitty damage the 360 more then help it? serious question.

shouldnt MS block this shit from coming out, or would that piss off activision, a valued (hahaha) 3rd party?

And given their track record you will be stuck with these visuals for the life span of Xbox 360 and PS3 in Tony Hawk games! yippeee!

Seriously this has less to do with the lackluster next gen 360 games and more with just blatantly showing how lazy and milking the Tony Hawk team has been.

They really should but it's a catch 22. They want a variety of games available at launch but have to sacrifice dev time in order to do so. It's clearly showing as most of the games we've seen are Xbox projects moved to the X360.

Its HDR Lighting, or an example of how NOT to do HDR lighting :lol
Won't really be able to see if there's any HDR from a screen

That's just bloom lighting (seriously...who the fuck thought that name up?)

I want to repeat someone else's question: why the hell is there a BMX bike in a tony hawk game?

Jeez, it doesn't seem so bad to me. Sure it's not up to snuff with other 360 games, but atrocious? I don't think so. It's just current gen TH cleaned up a bit with the rough edges smoothed out. It's not like I hated this gen's graphics. You all act like it's unplayable because it looks only slightly better than last gen's. Just chill the fuck out, it's not like this will "Damge" the 360. Tony Hawk fans who get a 360 will get this game, if they don't get a 360 they'll get it for this gen, and everybody else will play their games. You guys act as if this is PD0 or something, Microsoft's showcase game, when in reality it'll be thrown in the bottom of the pile with all of the other sports titles that aren't madden. Sure, it could be better, but complete crap? Unless you're expecting the same out of this gen's version, your expectations for every game on the 360 are a bit too high IMO.

This isn't the worst thing I've ever seen.

I really, really want this game; it sounds like its exactly what the series needs. If the X360 port has no slowdown (and I'm sure the Xbox and PS2 releases will), and I own an X360, that's all there is to it.

But yeah, it's largely a useless release.

Think about this. They have a new machine with 8 times as much RAM, a GPU chip with the capability to output more than 4 times the number of polys, and the game still looks the same with the "free AA" the GPU allows and perhaps some awful HDR implementation. They're not even trying and no developer/publisher should be rewarded for this kind of effort. At least throw much better textures (they could easily do this,) improve the models and spend a little time creating some clothing/surface shaders. I can't believe anyone would defend this. It's not about being a showcasing title, it's about being a next generation title that looks more than marginally better than the same game on a current generation platform.

Holy shit, the character models are atrocious. Obvious quick cash-in by Activision. Like someone else said, let's hope COD2 doesn't get infected by this.

Everything you mentioned costs money.
This game will sell boatloads anyway so why should they upgrade anything?

Take a Xbox 1 game, up the resolution, anti-alias it and you're set.

0$ spent.

Obviously. They should spend some money to upgrade the game in order to improve sales of the game because as it is, if you're not a huge fan of the game, you will be far from compelled to buy it on the Xbox 360.

the funny thing is, stinkles hinted the other day (yesterday?) that 360's BC may do all that on its own... so basically, you may be able to run the xbox version of the game on the 360 and have it look 95% the same :(

fuck activision

Sure, if you want to continue to stop new buyers from spending money on it and further piss off the fanbase you have to point where even if you do finally improve it they will never buy from you again.

And again, it's not like the original source of this game was looking that hot for current gen it started on anyways. So if you just up the resolution and anti-alias shit you still end up with just high quality shit. Figuratively speaking of course, I know firsthand how hardcore Tony Hawk fans can be.

Never played a Hawk game, did you?

Actually, I own many versions of the games.

THPS 1 - DC
THPS 2 - PC, DC
THPS 2x - Xbox
THPS 3 - GC, Xbox
THPS 4 - GC, Xbox
THUG 1 - GC, Xbox
THUG 2 - Xbox

I was just pointing out how ridiculous it is. I don't remember anything from the previous games that is as incredulous as grinding on a velvet rope held up by metal stands.

i was gonna say "that can't be a next gen game" but it seems that it actually is...

neversoft isn't even trying anymore, huh?

man i wish acclaim hadn't gone south, i'd like to see a next gen mirra or aggressive inline

The thing is that it isn't a next gen game, it's simply on a next gen system. Things would be a lot easier if people thought about things before they reacted.

But yeah it looks bad then again it's Tony Hawk.

Hey a Hawk fan!

Anyway how about grinding on electric-wires 6m over the ground?

Heh, ehh... THPS games are fun. I even liked THUG 2 and I'll probably like AW too. Minus the BMX crap od course.

THPS 2 > All

3-4 were not very fun, and the underground series is lame. I was a fan of the games too, but there's no excuse for this. As others said, the DC version which was a port looked much better than it's PS1 counterpart.

A dev buddy of mine is lead programmer at Neversoft and while they are currently working on Gun they have another studio doing this game. Be warned it is a DIRECT PORT from the Xbox version with little to NO upgrades/improvements whatsoever. Dont except next-gen from TH just yet.

is gun going to be the same sort of thing?

I really, really do not understand this kind of shit. This is next gen. Microsoft wants to make a HUGE splash, in hopes of taking a larger piece of the pie, and to start actually making money off of thier games division.

So you'd think that they would make sure, that all of thier launch games, and certainly the high profile ones(Tony Hawk, PD0) Would look SPECTACULAR but this is not the case.

This game looks so bad(Now I understand that it's all about the gameplay, and how much fun you have) how do they expect anyone, even the panty-wetting x-bots, to get excited about this?

You know what they say about first impressions, and between this and PD0, what the fuck is the point of upgrading laterally ?

I didn't hate this gen's graphics either, but it's all about context. As IJoel alluded to, this does look atrocious when considering the specs of the 360, just like a game that was based on the PSOne THPS games would look atrocious if it came out for the PS2.
