New trailer for Gary Whitta's AFTER EARTH

I do too, since this is pretty much the only place on Earth where they'd be referred to like that. God bless GAF :)

I'm off to NYC for the world premiere tomorrow night. Public advance screenings are tomorrow night also, so the floodgates will open soon enough. For any who may be wondering later, this will most likely be my last AE-related post; I did my best to avoid obnoxiously promoting the movie here, but more than that I always get super stressed at times like this, and reading internet stuff just feeds that. So I'm gonna do my best to go dark and just enjoy this weekend. So I most likely won't be lurking or posting in the Rottenwatch or box office threads; I did that with Eli and some people seemed to enjoy the opportunity to try to troll me, which is kinda lame. So this time I'm happy to let any discussion happen without my presence skewing things.

I had a great time working on the movie, and I'm really proud of the result. I hope people will come out and give it a shot as I think it's a really good old-fashioned family adventure with a strong father-son emotional story at its core. I think (hope) people will be surprised by it.

Thanks to everyone who has been supportive; see you on the other side! :)

I get anxious just reading about other people's work getting reviewed, so you have my sympathies. Best of luck and enjoy the premiere!

I refuse to be optimistic about this so I'm not disappointed.

It's a pretty cool setting, even if if the story is being done 3 times this summer.

It looks like world building is being done out the ass.

Almost ridiculously so.

Still, Shyamalan has 3rd degree burned me when it comes to movies.

If Oblivion was ok, and Elyisum looks great, maybe this one just had to be terrible to balance everything out.
I think the backstory is kind of cool. However, I like it remaining something we can find out for ourselves rather than seeing it in the sequels.

So Will Smith came up with the story as a vehicle for working with his son and making him more of a brand name. Gary Whitta was chosen to pen the script. Shyamalan edited it as he liked.

True?

Cast the right Will Smith in your movie next time.

Our paths vaguely crossed on this one... I very much doubt Will Smith comes up with stories any more than Tom Cruise does, fortunately Hollywood still actually looks for stories from writers. That said, a 'star vehicle' is still the leading factor in getting a blockbuster greenlit, so the stars' managers search for scripts that might be suitable. I could be completely wrong, but in this case I assume Smith's Overbrook Entertainment came across Gary's script which 'went out' to the studios as a spec or maybe just a pitch. He's proven to have a knack for getting specs picked up, a rare thing these days so much respect indeed. It no doubt needed some changes to make it more tailored to what Overbrook were looking for, (probably a similar process to Oblivion, where 'Tom always won every argument') then when the director was attached Sony would have maybe asked for at least one re-write before Shitemalan finally took over. I would also assume that Gary probably had a ton of backstory material he'd developed and maybe other previous ideas that had evolved into this script which they could draw from - and add to.
Ever since Men In Black 2 Will Smith seems to have gained a reputation for tinkering a LOT with scripts all the way through production so this may be no exception. I remember Gary saying how smoothly Eli went and would be very curious to know how this process compared..

Ok guess I am wrong. Despite numerous examples in the press saying 1000 A.E. was based on an original screenplay by Gary Whitta, this is the Wikipedia version:

<Will Smith conceived this story when he was watching the television show I Shouldn't Be Alive with his brother-in-law Caleeb Pinkett.[3] It was originally not a science fiction story but about a father and son crashing their car in the mountains or some remote region, with the son having to go out and get rescue for his father. Will Smith then decided to change the setting to 1000 years in the future, which imposed a higher budget. Smith had his production company Overbrook contact Gary Whitta (who was then known for his script for The Book of Eli) with a simple log line for a movie: a father and son crash landed on Earth 1000 years after it had been abandoned by humankind. Impressed with his idea and excited about the opportunity to work with him, Whitta fleshed out Smith's idea and pitched it to him, subsequently becoming the first employee on the project.>

Because the main characters of both movies are scientologists?

More proof this movie is about scientology: http://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1f8gef/after_earth_is_in_my_opinion_a_movie_strongly/

Some choice quotes:
Okay, so he's(Will Smith) a Scientologist. What does After Earth have to do with Scientology?

In my opinion, everything.
The promotional material and trailers make it very clear that "survival" is not only a theme in the movie, but also a marketing buzzword. In the book Dianetics, as well as innumerable other works of Scientology literature, LRH emphasizes repeatedly and strongly that "survive" is the highest command of existence and that everything in life is subservient to this command.
In fact, the core of Scientology, the Eight Dynamics, revolve around the concept of survival, as seen in this information and video from the official Scientology website: http://www.scientology.org/what-is-scientology/basic-principles-of-scientology/eight-dynamics.html

...

But why would he do this? Why make a "Scientology movie"?
Because LRH himself tried and failed.

And because Scientologists literally believe that science fiction stories, what they call "space opera", are repressed memories of events that occurred millions of years ago.

The Master is the best scientology movie. You can't top it Whitta!

I know you guys are joking but m night is a pretty well known religious Christian. I doubt he makes a movie to serve scientology.

Gotta admit, this is the first Will Smith movie I've been looking forward to in a long time. M. Night as well. Not a fan of either of them or Jaden Smith, obviously.

And it's not Gary either. I just really really loved the trailers for this. I do wish we had a bit more interesting "creatures" that they're fighting, but the relationship between father and son is going to be a huge push for me to see this.

I doubt it's a Scientology inspired movie, but with the way Shyamalan's career trajectory has gone I'm positive he wouldn't be choosy about what he works on at this point.

If Will Smith wanted to put some Scientology stuff into the script, he'd be going, "Sure, Will. Sure. No problem at all. You'll still be in my movie, right!? Please don't leave!"

Last airbender was garbage but it made 320 Million dollars.
M Night doesn't have to beg for anyone.

6% on RT: well, this made my day. Maybe they'll think twice before making absolute shite.

Sadly, the fools that wander the earth will watch this and it will probably make some absolutely undeserved money.
