Next Castlevania won't be done by Mercury Steam

This highlights more than anything that we need some new blood in game development.
Our choices seem to be limited to Platinum or Randomjokedeveloper.

Well, Wayforward _could_ produce a very cool classic CV game. But it would probably be a remake of IV in that case, and not a fresh game.

Love the MS (LoS) games... excited for the next one. Recently I realized that I never played the final DLC for LoS and downloaded it. Pretty good so far, only finished one level of it.

They had a fantastic vision of the Castlevania universe. The 3DS game was full of surprises as well. It's great to take something you know and love, and turn it up on its head and give it a different spin.

Funny how people complain about FPS sequels and call em rehashes but when it comes to Castlevania (and many other Japanese IPs) all they want is another generic sequel rehash.
There's a fuckton of Metroidvanias, no more please.

I'd like a return to Classicavania or a whole new take. Not WayForward if it's 2D, not Platinum if it's 3D. Also, this isn't news. MercurySteam announced this at least a year ago.

2D linear levels with branching paths and multiple characters, please. In other words, Castlevania III-2.

I would also accept a Super Castlevania IV-2.

WayForward would be an acceptable developer.

How about a 3D Metroidvania? Like Metroid Prime, except, you know, Castlevania themed. With Dark Souls like combat. Hell, give this to From. xD

Oh REEEEALLLY?!

Lords of Shadows ZERO.

I'm confused as to why anyone thinks Konami would bring on another developer to add chapters to MercurySteam's story when MS would have made them if they thought there were stories left to tell.

They'll either reboot the series again or go back to the classic timeline. There's no reason for them to continue in the Lords of Shadow universe if MercurySteam is being allowed to end it on their own terms.

Treasure members did the original Super CV IV, I believe, so there is further evidence of non-IGA Castlevania games being quite good. And to clarify, I have nothing against IGA, but he's made the same game since 1997, CV Judgment notwithstanding. If he can really evolve the franchise, I think that would be great, but the creativity of an entirely new studio might be the better option.

Okay, a little unfair since LoS was a pretty, entertaining little game; but let's all be honest, that was not Castlevania. The little fragments of familiar story, the gothic architecture... elements were there, but Castlevania is more than a Belmont, Dracula and a Castle.

Let's take this opportunity, while the franchise is still lukewarm, to get back to basics here; gorgeously animated HD 2-D Console Belmont action with branching paths and a gothic/rock soundtrack.
I would settle for more IGAvania, even on a handheld, but the series deserves so much better than that. Just please, no more God of Warvania

This was known, but still dissppointing. Mercury Stream has done more to help this brand than anyone in a really long time. Their influence will be missed. Hopefully Konami continues to do the franchise justice after Los2, and Mercury Steam gets to work on more great projects for us

I'm starting to doubt you've ever actually played an IGAvania.
And I'm sgartong to doubt you've ever played the classics as IGA recycled Rondo of Blood's sprites for 12 years.

and thatt "castlevania 2d only plx" is nauseating, as if so called fans wanted to make cv the only franchise stuck in the 90's. you know whT happened to the last one that did that? ask megaman, oh you can't, it's DEAD

Iga refuses to evolve the Metroidvania formula to the next level (multiple castles, or maybe even traversing the whole of Europe--OoE touched the surface of this, but in the end it felt like a glorified level select for old-school CV), so maybe it's time to find someone else with a grander vision...

While I agree with what you're saying here about the series's future, saying that the LoS era has made the franchise "lukewarm" couldn't be further from the truth: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Lords-of-Shadow-Is-the-Best-Selling-Castlevania-Title-354378.shtml

I understand that some people don't like LoS, but facts are facts. LoS has probably done more to revitalize the franchise in the public circle than any game since SotN.

Everyone saying Platinum can die in a fire, please. I don't want their action shit in Castlevania. It's the reason I don't like LoS in the first place.

Why not Vanillaware?

Vanillaware makes beautiful games, but the gameplay is usually super-repetitive.

If they managed to have Vanillaware do the art design and Igarashi do the game design, that MIGHT be an interesting combination, since it would nullify one of IGA's main weaknesses (visuals and laziness)

If they want, they can let you take part in old events and the rich history of Lords of Shadow.

For example, for a pretty damn good adventure I would suggest Gandolfi as playable character, There is also the Founders of the Brotherhood fight against Satan and hell which can go either ways, and also the Necromantic War which is the hardest to do even though so interesting.

But I don't want another developer adding chapters, Gabriel/Dracul story should end completely, but past stories is welcome to me, yet I am also afraid of an Ascension like title.

I have no idea how Konami intend to go with 3D Castlevania forward, and I am also finding it hard to believe that there is a developer out there who can make a better story than MercurySteam's LoS.

I'm sorry but if theres a developer that can do action, its platinum and they can do a lot more than action games

I don't understand why they had to bring Lords of Shadow to 3DS too, instead of letting Iga keep doing his thing on there. Yeah, he made pretty samey games, but it's not like we are swimming in good Metroidvanias nowadays.

I was hoping for the gameplay to NOT be completely monotonous

Just outsource the visuals to Vanillaware.

Not saying this with any sort of tone, just curious-- what would you like?

For a 3D Castlevania? Any developer that knows how to translate the 2D Castlevania feel into 3D. Castlevania is an action platformer, not a pure action game, like LoS.

Platinum is known for they action games. I find them shallow as fuck, so anyone, but them.

My real preference though is going back to 2D. They have many options out there, including IGA. It doesn't matter, though, who will develop it, I just want a Castlevania game akin to the Classic or Metroidvania ones (or even a new style, like a procedurely generated Castle, like in Rogue Legacy).

Castlevania isn't an action series for me. Platforming has to have just as much emphasys as the combat has. Something like Alice Madness or Castlevania 64, for example.

Because "IGA doing his thing" sold less and less copies every time. People were getting bored of his style, and the sales reflected that reality. Konami's not a charity, they're not going to keep letting IGA make games if he's not going to increase sales or at least keep them stagnant from game to game. The series was bleeding out under his watch.

I'm with you about Platinum. I like them, but you only usually get a good combat system. I said this in another post but I'd need a lot more than that from Castlevania. I guess we disagree about Lords of Shadow being just a pure action game but I would also like to see even more platforming.

IGAvanias were like a good curry. They were reliable, they were meaty, they could be challenging, they were frequently available and, yes, you'd seen a lot of the ingredients before, if not quite arranged in the same way. I found it hard to complain about the various portable Castlevanias released since the GBA launched, and it does kinda suck to see them no longer around.

Do we need them? Nah. But I sure as hell wouldn't mind them if they came back.

Good thanks for this.

Is like complaining about all those Megaman Zero portable releases...

This thread, my god! And they say Zelda fans don't know what they want.

Provided I enjoy LoS2 as much as I did the first, I'd hate to see MS depart so quickly. But ultimately I want a Rayman style 2D HD on the consoles more than anything.

I guess I want it all.

My favorite moments in SotN were the little bits where horror and storytelling came to the fore (and the fantastic soundtrack, natch).

The Sucubus fight and the confessional booth were both standout moments to me. My dream game is a 2D metroidvania with all new HD sprites, Ubi-Art style, and with a heavier narrative/atmospheric emphasis. Oh, and a crazy acid jazz soundtrack.

As much as I like From Soft and Platinum, I don't want every single game I play to have the same style ( artistically or gameplay-wise ), I want some variety in my vidya.

IGA is worn out and out of ideas, and has been for almost a decade. Let's have an actually good Japanese developer make the next mainline CV game.

And let's have it be on a goddamn console this time. No more handheld ghetto, and no more fucking SNES sprite recycling. Enough is enough already.

Technically it's PC Engine CD asset recycling :P
