Next Castlevania won't be done by Mercury Steam

Time for a younger producer, eh?

Konami gets it. Their franchises excel when they bring on fresh people with new ideas who haven't built up the cynicism of a franchise studio.

Konami was pleased with Metal Gear Rising, commercially, IIRC. PlatinumGames might be a good studio to give a shot with this, especially given Nintendo's likely to cut them out once Bayo2/W101 inevitably underperform.

I'm not ok with Platinum tbh, but I know GAF would slap it even in a chess game.

Aside from Metal Gear, does Konami make ANYTHING internally anymore? I'm starting to think the non-Kojipro part of Konami is just one guy who licenses their franchises out, while Tak Fujii gets him coffee and Iga just sits in the corner.

Even KojiPro license their games out to Platinum when they can't do it...

I'm a new fan of MercurySteam after LoS.

Hope they can do something awesome after LoSII.

And I hope they keep Oscar Araujo tagging along to do their OSTs, that man is simply amazing.

God it's me Arc. We haven't talked in awhile, and I'm pretty sure after this favor It'll probably be a long ass time before I call you again.... But.

Please make the next Castlevania be an Igavania!!!!

Even more specific, let it be a Castlevania developed by P* with some astounding open level design.

EDIT: My prayers haven been beaten so many times ago.

This is bad news for me actually. LOS is the best Castlevania game in ages, if they're just going to make another 3d character action game then why bother switching when Mercury Steam are already nailing it?

As much as i'd like to see an amazing original 2D Castlevania on consoles, that isnt going to happen any time soon...unless its a Hard Corps uprising style project.

I'm up for whatever new path they choose...as long as they can get some music going that is as high quality as Castlevania III onward.

I'd also rather it be more of an action platformer than straight up action with a few puzzles. Only thing I didnt really like about Lords of Shadow was the soundtrack. It was nice, but only had maybe two or three memorable themes:

Hunting Path

The Ogre

Tinfoil: What if Mercury Steam is making the next DMC?

I'm sorry, but LoS just wasn't a Castlevania game in my opinion.
They should have called it something else like "Prince of Darkness" or "God of Hatred" or something like that.

I'm sorry that affirmation isn't worth the pixels it took to display on, it has Castlevania on its name, it's a Castlevania, period. There's no other way around it, if Judgment is a Castlevania, LoS is, and it is, sorry, keep living in your bubble and I hope you like to think the series ended 5 years ago.

If they were smart, they'd let him make new 2D games for 3DS. or a nice hefty expansion/sequel to Harmony of Despair.

What's smart about them giving the series back to the guy who almost killed it once already, then putting it on a handheld that doesn't sell third party software? Konami wants the Castlevania games to sell more, not less.

Sometimes, I think IGA fans are completely blind to the reality of the situation.

Just because you can slap the Castlevania name on it, doesn't necessarily mean that it will feel like a Castlevania game to everyone. I'd agree that it felt like generic action game that could have had just about any other name attached to it. Now with that being said, it did play well, and was generally a good game.

Beyond that, I'm excited to see where they can take the series. If they go back to a more traditional style Castlevania (metroidvania or classic 2D) then I'd be happy with that. If they follow the path of MS that would be fine too. I just hope whatever company takes it over, that they capture more of the Castlevania feel.

???

The 3DS isn't exactly a huge driver of third party games. It's obviously not doing as bad as the Vita, but non-Nintendo 3DS games generally don't sell all that well, particularly in the West.

And given the fact that Castlevania as a series is more popular in the West than it is in Japan...

If anything OoE proves to me that Iga was beginning to break his own mold. As far as sales, put the next one on Vita/3DS/XBLA/PSN/Steam. Share the love.

Oh I wouldn't be so sure, it would not be hard to sell more third party units on vita than 3ds here. The overall success of the 3ds is vastly blown out of proportion here in terms of success outside of Nintendo published titles. Its no DS yet, that's for sure

Is Judgment a Castlevania for you?

It's in the same universe, so yes, in terms of name. In terms of actually feeling like a Castlevania themed game, I think it succeeds to some degree. Same with LoS, somewhat succeeds, but I think you could swap out Gabe with another character model, change the name, and no one would mistake it for a Castlevania themed game. For me it was missing something.

I can't blame Konami for moving it in the direction they did to attempt to make it more palatable to a mass market. In doing so they may have rescued the series, but I think they lost some character in the process.

I feel I'm taking crazy pills, a shovelware fighting game with terrible anime characters and boob jokes is more deserving of being a Castlevania than Lords. I'm definitively in planet fuck.

If they had a more melodic soundtrack instead of the ambience they went for, I think people's "not Castlevania" complaints might not have been as prevalent.

Add some bishonen art, pot roast in walls and collectible chairs and we're done.

Honestly, I think the music is what led people to really feel like it wasn't a CV game. Because holy shit, those castle stages are amazing.

Hahaha. Never did I say one was more deserving than the other. They both don't entirely capture the feel of CV for me. Heaven forbid someone not feel the same about the game as you.

It sounded a little more agressive than I expected sorry, it was kinda my intention for it to sound outrageus eh. i have some Castlevania confessions to make, and if I said which game I don't "feel" as a Castlevania I would be cruicified (hint: is not Symhony)

I have the feeling that they will pick a western developer again. I like LoS, so I don't have any complain if they pick well. My main concern is what's going to happen if this new Castlevania game sells worst than the LoS saga?.

Totally invalidated your entire statement right there.

Face it, Igavania has plenty of fans and these games sell. Tons of people love the Metroidvania formula and continue to want to see new installments with new characters, or cameos from other ones.

After finishing Lords of Shadow two weeks ago... thank God. I really don't like their take on the brand (though their design looks nice).

Lords of Shadow doesn't really feel like Castlevania, but it brought some improvements to the God Of War formula, and the art design and amount of unique content was quite impressive.

I'm ready for an IGAvania or a Classicvania though.

Yeah, I liked LoS too, but it just didn't feel like Castlevania. Loved the Patrick Stewart naration the most.

Would love to Soma brought back in something new.
