Next Nintendo platform - Volume 1: Haptic technology

I still really wish that the Motionplus tech was integrated into the Wiimote right from the start. Maybe we would've had less mindless waggling.

It probably happened because the tech wasn't as advanced back when Wii launched, or it was too costly for industry scale production.

Or it's just been another case of features being not used from the start on purpose for having a brand new catch later in a device's lifespan. :

Pssst, the rumble that's been in controllers since the dual shock, the little bump your phone does when you type... Those are all haptic feedback. We're a long way from making consumer touch surfaces that mimic surface textures and are more usable than controllers keyboards and mice.

I think Nintendo has to be verrrry careful about being viewed as using a gimmick with the next console. They can't risk having developers say to themseleves, "Well, that's neat, but nobody's going to buy it, and I don't want to spend the time/money developing for it." At the same time, they probably don't have the resources/people to go head to head with Sony and MS on hardware. This all means they're going to need a great idea with a shitload of internal testing to gauge people's interest. This can't just be thrown together at the last second and let's cross our fingers.

Bad idea. Why ? Because it's likely to be underused. It's a technology that is hard to market. You'd have to show people that you're supposed to feel what you touch, but for what ? What purpose ? Even if 3D was disliked by some people, it had that special wow effect. Double screen ? It helped with gaming. Touch screen ? It led to new gameplays. But haptic is basically an evolution of touch screen and not something new.

Also, it's likely something like this would be expensive to produce.

Also, gameplay-wise, haptic buttons are a terrible, terrible, terrible idea. Really.

Doesnt that steamcontroller do haptic feedbak?

Yes, true. But, as already said, I was more referring to haptic tech + touch screen combination, which still has to be used meaningfully in gaming.
