Zombie, you guys have massive, glaring holes in your roster more than anything. Bottom 6, PK, depth at D, goaltending... and yet a large payroll.

Being a Leafs fan is like being the kid that touches the hot stove over and over again to see if it's actually still hot.

Better that than avoiding the stove forever after getting burned once.

BJ, this is the easiest week you'll ever do. Pat Quinn as a Canucks coach? Buuuurrrrn (?).

I'm not saying the Leafs don't have holes in the lineup, but the problems they've been having have nothing to do with talent. If players are taking stupidly long shifts that start costing you goals, it's the coach's job to straighten them out. If players have no idea where to be and what to do in the defensive zone, it's the coach's job to straighten that out. If the team can't get a bit excited and show up against shitty teams like Montreal and Winnipeg when they're barely - barely - hanging on to 8th place, the coach should be there to pump them up.

Rick Nash won't and can't fix any of these issues. "Let's go!" won't fix any of these problems. These are structural and management problems from behind the bench.

JUST LIKE THE LEAFS FORGOT TO SHOW UP

I can't talk, I didn't watch the game. I let my BC buddies borrow my Gamecenter login and I went to the beach instead.

Luongo looks like he's on some serious MDMA.

I know I'm lttp but the CBC Nucks Leafs intro was awesome and cutting those would be a dream job of mine.

Can I have a link to this? CBC do absolutely amazing game intros.

Whenever I see your avatar it reminds me of an old buddy who's dad did the art for some of the books.
CBC always fucking nails their intros. That's one of my favourite things about playoff games on CBC.
Amen, CBC is really in another league in that department.

If we win today, we'll be 2nd in the East.

For about an hour, before Boston and NJ win. The East is so tight it's crazy.

What is the point of trading a bunch of draft picks for rental defensemen when your goalies are trash?

Building a wall in front of the goalies.

Defensemen may not have been the best choice, over say--construction workers (or Chinese peasants, if you want a wall that'll last) but draft picks are less able to put the bricks in place. Draft picks would give us weak rookies who will maybe one day be able to build some kind of wall, but we need it up soon.

So you want to sell out the team's future for some temporary band-aids?

I dont agree with bringing in 2 depth defenseman like they did, but giving up a 2nd and a 4th is not selling out the teams future. I would have rather they kept those picks to be part of a package for a top pairing defenseman, but I guess they felt they couldnt get one of those.

Obviously, as long as it doesn't happen every year. He was making it sound as if picks were useless.

Pens extended Neal for 6 years/$30 million

Happy Hockey Day in America! The greatest, most-anticipated Sunday in all of sports, yay!

The Real Deal!

Neal signed a 6 year contract extension, 5m cap hit. He's tough, physical, already has 30 goals for the year and fits into our system perfectly. I love his hustle and work ethic and I'm thrilled we locked him down at a fair price. Welcome to our core unit Nealer.

5 million? For a guy who's on pace for 40 goals, and provided that he can maintain that level of production over the contract period, that's a good signing in my books. Who else do the Pens have to re-sign in the offseason?

EDIT: I checked thehockeygm.com, and the Pens have the following guys to worry about in the offseason:

Steve Sullivan
Aaron Asham
Matt Niskanen
Brent Johnson

Niskanen is the only RFA of the bunch. I'd be comfortable with Shero dealing any of these guys at the trade deadline to lock up another reliable scoring winger, especially if Crosby is going to be shut down for the rest of the season.
:(

Niskanen I think and that's it. We're set for next year, after that it's going to get interesting with Letang and Staal needing to resign.

Is he really only making 2.9 mil this year? How is Neal getting so little?

Eh, Staal is making 4 mil and unless he returns to like rookie form he hasn't been scoring 4 mil worth I don't think. Not that he's not a good player and doesn't bring other things but 4 mil seems pretty ok for him if that can stay there. Letang if he keeps getting better and better like he has is going to become seriously underpaid which will become a problem unless he's willing to take a discount to stay in pittsburgh.

Looks like Letang is locked in at 3.5 million through this season, next season, and the one after that.

"You're welcome, Pittsburgh."

Ya, but if he does well enough he may go to arbitration or something. I hope he likes being a pen enough that he'll take a discount when the time finally comes. I think the biggest thing in the next year or two is what eventually happens to crosby and if we'll still have a contract that big on the books or if that clears a lot of cap space.

Yeah. It's just incredibly sad that Pens fans even have to talk like this about Crosby's future.

I think you're reading that wrong, he goes UFA in 2014. We have locked down for two more seasons. Staal goes UFA after this next season, and Letang the one after that. I don't know what Staal will do, I hope he stays but if he keeps improving offensively he could become pretty expensive.

Sullivan, Asham, and Johnson aren't going to get bigger contracts in the off-season, if they're even resigned at all (Asham probably will be). If Sullivan comes back he's probably going to have to take a big pay cut. Niskanen is the only signing we have to worry about this year, it'll be interesting to see what Shero does with him.

My mind is messed. I thought it was still 2011. And that still makes my math wrong. Damn.

I'd like to keep Johnson. He's a serviceable backup, despite his troubles early on this season.

Big game between the Wings and Sharks today. Detroit's the better team but SJ's had our number the last couple of years.. should be a good one.

Also I feel a little dirty but I'm hoping for a Chicago regulation win against the Blues.

I've always heard that Staal is being "held back" in Pittsburgh. I remember hearing some people feel he is a lot better than he's been showing offensively but for the team he plays a more shutdown role when needed and if one of the big guys go down he'll turn it up offensively.

Don't know how true that is, but if so if he's not an RFA I can see a lot of teams throwing money at him.

He's a player that can cross check someone head first into the boards and only get a 2 minute penalty and a pathetic $2500 fine, so that makes him even more appealing.

I've heard that too but I don't know if that's true. He's become more defense oriented but I don't know who's decision that was. But if pens are willing to offer 4 mil, I can't see many people throwing money over that to get him. If he is like that it's been a couple seasons since scoring like that. His highest is still like 28 and two seasons he had like 10 or 11 and 2 he had 20-21ish. I can't see anyone taking a huge gamble and paying over 4 mil for that.

What are you babbling about?

Staal is doing exactly what he needs to do to succeed in Pittsburgh. Him and Cooke on the PK are money, and he's been chipping in his fair share of points since coming back too.

I agree completely but I can't see someone beating down the door to pay over 4 mil that we currently are for that. Unless something weird happens, I'm not too worried about him.

I think he's a a player that does whatever is needed to get done. Not a lot of need for scoring with 87 & 71 on the same team.

That's due to injuries. If he could stay healthy he'd hit 40 goals easily.

Staal is in a shutdown role because he's great at it. He's not the best playmaker but he can score and his defensive game is excellent. He's also superb on the PK.

Who? Staal? He's been playing full seasons except for last year and this year. There's nothing shown that "he'd hit 40 goals easily", I don't believe that assessment at all. That's delusional.
