Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive (Gosling, Mulligan, Hendricks)

I just realized that
the scorpion and the frog reference means that Drive dies at the end. Just like the scorpion dies in the fable.

Maybe, maybe not. The author of the book is writing a sequel that stars the same driver. This of course does not mean there will be another film, or that the book and film even have to end the same way. I think its just left open ended on purpose.

this is so fucking cool.
this for real?

The elevator scene proves that the Driver is
really a sociopath. He's no longer the cool guy with some social anxiety problems and a bit of a temper. He's fucking nuts. He bashes a guy's brains in to defend the woman he loves, only he doesn't realize how much it hurts her. I just went back and rewatched the scene, and it seems that when he kisses and then stares at her, he is accepting and acknowledging his fate, that he can never lead a normal life.

this is exactly, 100% what i felt when watching the scene,
the way it's acted and shot convey this message over pretty much everything else. Even her reaction after

It was confronting, but it was a great scene IMO

I took it more as his last chance to let her know how he feels about her, considering what he is about to do is going to radically change her perception of him.

Yeah. When he's talking to Bernie on the phone, Drive mentions the story of the scorpion and the frog. And Drive wears a jacket with a massive scorpion on the back. And the camera zooms in on this scorpion all the time. The point is that doing all that crazy stuff is in Drive's nature and he couldn't change if he wanted to.

or it could be that he is the frog and the scorpion (the mafia/ his longing for a relationship) is on his back drowning him. Either way, his outlook is grim. But he could easily have sidestepped the fable too

Well,
that's not how Refn sees it, as he states in the link below "And in ‘Drive’ he lives on for more and new adventures" in an interview.

SPOILERS IN THIS LINK

I think the
scorpion and frog story is mainly in relation to his tendencies as an individual as you mentioned earlier, rather than the actual end of the story.

Is this old? GQ interview with the costume designer, Erin Benach.

"I read the script and I knew we needed something iconic - something that people would never tire of watching throughout the film. Driver wasn't going to be changing his clothing very much - it's not one of those movies. The character is really more of a superhero than he is a person - although we wanted people to think he's a real person so that they would feel attached to him."

JACKET: "We got to this idea of a white quilted satin jacket with a scorpion on the back. The scorpion came a little later - that was inspired by this Kenneth Anger video "Scorpio". We built the jacket from scratch."

GLOVES: "A specialty glove-maker in LA made the gloves for us. We made only a couple of styles, because I always knew what we wanted. I was very inspired by Steve McQueen."

SUNGLASSES: "I almost cried my eyes out the day he put those on. I absolutely hate them. [laughs] I think he showed up on the day wearing them - I wanted him to wear these other sunglasses and I nearly cried."

Yeah, I don't think it was supposed to be that deep. Simply him knowing that it may well be his last opportunity to show her how he feels. But I don't think he planned on beating the guy like that, but he lost control and that was clear when he looked back at her he knew he fucked up.

I don't think he's a sociopath... Aren't sociopath's extremely selfish and basically only in it for themselves? He obviously cares about Irene a lot and the whole mess he's in is from him trying to help her.

Him caring about her and trying to help her shows he has empathy which sociopath's lack.

Plus a sociopath usually acts normal and well driver kind of didn't lol.

Interesting thoughts. I would love to hear if the Scorpion/Frog parable was definitely the inspiration for the jacket.

I don't think he is the scorpion. At least he doesn't see himself as one. Note that the scorpion is on his back. He is the one transporting dangerous people around. And when they try to kill him (as is their nature) they go down with him.

This is true. Anyone who thinks he's a sociopath doesn't know what a sociopath is. In fact, in some ways he's the opposite -- he put the welfare of others ahead of his own personal well-being.

However, he did have some serious anger management issues.

its been a while since i watched the movie, but what was the whole deal with his time limit to clients? like they have a certain amount of minutes from when they get in the car before he just abandons them. whats the point of that? he's basically saying he can't guarantee their getaway.
I didn't get that either. He reiterates numerous times that they cannot be "a minute under or a minute over" 5 minutes. I get a minute over, but why not a minute under? Why only dot on 5 mins?

Because he needs an exact timeframe in mind when he plans his getaways. Coming in under or over 5 minutes would throw off his timing all the same.

I'm disappointed Drive didn't get the oscar for sound editing. I thought the sound work was impressive, especially during the
chase from the pawn shop

I thought it had something to do with the silent alarm and the police response time? Under 5 minutes is fine, over 5 is not.

He is saying he will wait for 5 min outside with the car. Obviously if they get done sooner he leave sooner.

He is not going to bail on them if the cops get there early, and he is not going to stick around if they take too long.

I just listened the the quote again.

A minute either side of that is before or after the 5min window.

First shot (though it's nothing) of Gosling and Refn's next film, Only God Forgives:

It is supposedly more violent than Drive.

...and involves lots of swordplay with "slicing and dicing." Can't wait.

The big news is that Weinstein's Radius label picked it up which means it will be landing on VOD the same time as theaters.

I wish people would stop trying to interpret the Driver's psychology. Winding Refn wasn't interested in psychological discourse, here, and it's pretty evident. This is not Taxi Driver. It's a stylistic exercise, and a well done one. He wanted to create an iconic character who actually thinks he's an icon, a kind of self-conscious superhero. There's not much sense being made on a character point of view here.

Aren't you interpreting the Driver's psychology here? He acts like a badass hero from a movie, and it shapes his actions. You could argue that that's his psychology

Neat.

Also, I didn't find Drive to be that violent. However the violence was rather shocking most of the time. I think because the victims were usually unaware or powerless to stop it.

That and the huge contrast in tone from the rest of the first 30-40 min of the movie.

Do you know if it's supposed to be a 2013 release? I didn't realize they had only just started shooting.

Last I heard it was aiming for around when Drive was released last year (Sept.), but I could totally see The Weinsteins fucking with the release. They have a full slate this year of 2nd half releases (Cogan's, Django, The Master, Silver Lining, Wettest County)

Just saw Drive. Enjoyed it very much but I have one question about the first scene:
did the thieves get arrested after the driver ditched the car?

Edit: Nevermind just went a few pages back in this thread and saw some discussion on it.

Just got done watching this and immediately ordered the soundtrack. As someone who grew up on 80's movies this film was a big ole' wet sloppy kiss to the decade of decadence. Loved it.
