Nier Automata PC Release Date Confusion By Square Enix

I knew there was a game that was first-party and published on Steam but I just couldn't remember which one it was. Good job.

I don't like Quiet too but I don't think it should really matter when we're talking about commercial decisions lol.

No I was just pointing out Kojima has been known to say a lot of things. I just mean if he believed going exclusive would be better for his game he would do it. But it brings up an interesting question about how many rights he has to the engine he is using. If he truly wanted to be independent he would have gone with UE4 or one of the many other platform agnostic engines.

why is this thread now about Death Stranding

It's another prominent release with some weirdness surrounding the announced PC version.

Well, what's interesting is that Helldivers and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture appear to actually be published by Sony under Playstation Mobile.

http://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=PlayStation Mobile, Inc.

This relationship actually does in fact prove that Sony themselves are open to releasing games on Playstation and PC depending on the arrangement with the publisher. It's an interesting relationship I wasn't even aware of, so it's kinda great to learn something from this discussion!

It does seem so but I don't know. They are good games but not quite of the same prominence as Death Stranding so I could see Sony pushing for full exclusivity just because they are investing so much more heavily in tech support and funding then those.

But Nier: Automata actually exists.

So does Death Stranding. I am not sure why you are upset. We will inevitably talk about other releases in a thread like this. But Nier will release either the same day or be like Dragon Quest Heroes and release shortly after. There is really not much to discuss about Nier itself.

SE treats their PC fanbase like shit, I should be used to it by now but I'm still irritated and tired of their shit.

I'm kinda puzzled at the narrative that S-E treats PC fans like shit. I don't feel this is so at all. I think that with regards to the release of their Japanese games, S-E has shown a lack of understanding for the expectations of fans and some of the standards for a PC release in the modern age, but none of it is out of maliciousness or any ill intent. The opposite seems to be true. Their marketing team AND the developers have shown that they are trying to learn more and adapt to feedback. The FFXIII games got increasingly better ports with each entry, they tried to make Type-0 HD as good as possible on PC, they make a conscious effort in getting as many of their mobile titles on PC as possible, etc. On the western side, obviously there are pretty much zero problems.

I appreciate all these efforts. Do I get annoyed that they still suck at communications sometimes? Sure. Is there more they can do if they actually understood what PC fans want instinctively rather than having to react to feedback? Absolutely. But are they in any way trying to treat PC fans "like shit"? I... just don't see that at all. Not even close.

I don't think they do it maliciously, I just think that a company as large as Square Enix shouldn't be given a pass for incompetence. If they want PC players to acknowledge them, they should go back and fix the FFXIII ports at a bare minimum.

It's true but this is Kojima he has bargaining power from this deal and Sony I bet is willing is doing anything to accommodate and have their brand and publishing to his eventual masterpiece

No need people are still buying the XIII trilogy on PC despite the negative performance reviews going around. Plus LR is actually a good port that they took time to do.
I guess they might update if the XIII PS4/One collection rumor is true

I agree, the only ports I had issues with were XIII, and like you said they got better as they went along.

I think there's a difference between saying "I don't see how they are treating fans like shit, they're just bad at their jobs sometimes" and giving them a pass. I mean it's not a pass. If an upcoming release has a problem, it has a problem and maybe you might not want to buy it immediately without hearing from others first. I think that's reasonable. I just don't see the narrative of "they treat us like shit, fuck em!!!!" to be particularly helpful here.

Isn't this simply a case of them prioritising to get the PS4 version done on time or something. Maybe all their resources at the moment have gone to that. So they don't know if they are able to get a proper PC version on time, hence the reluctance to commit to a release date right now. Dunno...

To longstanding SE costumers like me, who prefer to play on PC when possible, the way they treat their pc customers is honestly respectless.

Everytime they announce a game like FFXIIIZJSHD i'm left to guess when the PCport may or may not release, meaning since i'd like to play the game as fast as possible, but rather not actually double dip wasting money buying the game twice, i'm absolutely left to take my luck and buy their Console version hoping that the PCport doesn't suddenly get announed a week later as that would mean i just wasted 50 bucks.

That they were literally sitting on a finished PCport of FFX for over a year is just adding insult to injury.

I don't think it's because of maliciousness either, but that they absolutely can't be arsed to get a proper "communication pipeline" going is infuirating.

Just tell me what your release plans are so i can make an informed purchase decision.

i refused to buy the FF Tactics mobile remake because i expected that game to be ported to PC within 6 Months, like they ported over all their other FF classics.

Yet here i am still waiting. Still not having played the remake.

And now they've announced Nier: Automata for PC, a sequel to my favorite game of all time, that i'd love to play on PC, and again they completely refuse to give a simple statement as to wether it's gonna release on PC day 1 or not.

Since it's a blessing we get Nier 2 to begin with, and it being developed by platinum games games, and since i would buy the console version for my yoko taro shrine either way i'm personally not very upset about what's happening here, but i can't say at all that i'm approving of what they're doing, especially not as this will very factually harm it's sales.

It's just incredibly frustrating all around.

This would be understandable if the PC version wasn't the lead platform.

It's Square Enix. I wouldn't be surprised if the PC version will suddenly be delayed to late 2017 ... ooops

Dark Souls II had PC as the "lead platform", but the release was 6 weeks late.

I don't think the problem is the delay - if there really will be one.
The problem is how they're communicating. Like, I can' believe anyone would be mad if they just announced that it would release a month later on PC due to some additional work on the PC version or whatever.
It's just that this state of uncertainty and back-and-forth with no clear information is just frustrating.

Ugh. Was trying to find Nier on steam and couldn't. I guess this explains why. I really hope we get a PC version close to launch. I don't wanna wait and I'd rather get this on PC than PS4. :/

It looks like we will have to wait, because there might be some kind of deal between SE and Sony.
Can't believe they are silent like this after basically confirming that it will release on the same day as PS4 version. But it's SE... so i am not really surprised, after what they did with ROTTR.
