I know plenty of womenfolk who would love this.

you think?

everyone these days is always so quick to say "this offends me"

who gives a fuck what offends you, it doesn't make you entitled to anything.

Haha! What kind of response is that? Do you tell that every time you hear some express an opinion? For all of the people all gung-ho about pointing out how PC culture is now I don't think anyone has really said they've taken offense to the shirt in the first place, but even if people were offended, what exactly would they be feeling entitled to?

Why should being overweight, and in a position to create many more health risks for yourself be appluaded? I don't think i'll ever understand the rationalization that being obease is something that should be celebrated.

In reguards to the shirt I don't think it's that big of an issue, my wife thought it was funny, but she commented that she does think it makes sense because these women are in fact digging for gold, I agree that maybe they should have put an olympic medal on the shirt as it probably would have softened the negative reaction to the t-shirt.

Nike is a company that does infact support a strong female imagine in my opinion though in many more ways then a large portion of other companies. They have their issues as with any company, but creating a bad image for strong women I don't think is one.

Except most plus size models aren't overweight and are pretty damn healthy.

While trying to defend women, you're calling 90% of women stupid.

You think 90% of women will buy this shirt? I know you think it's clever and all but I really don't see it doing that well.

Don't think I'm really trying to defend anyone, but alright.

Whoever thought a Nike t’shirt emblazoned with ‘GOLD DIGGING’ was a fitting tribute to female Olympians shuld be fired,” said another.

Okay.

Nah, I don't think it'll sell all that well either, because the pun mostly makes sense during Olympic time, I just don't think that if 100 random women saw the shirt, only 10% would get the reference.

That is the dumbest fucking shirt I have ever seen in my life.

A Nike logo underneath the phrase doesn't automatically change the more well-known meaning. I'd definitely laugh at anyone who wore it.

90% of the people who buy this shirt (assuming it's sold in stores) won't get the reference. And that'll go up as time passes.

Honestly if I saw someone wearing that shirt without seeing this thread linking it to the Olympics, I wouldn't have gotten the reference. I would have thought it unironically meant "I'm exercising to look hot for a rich man".

It's not subtle enough. Maybe if there was an olympic medal somewhere on the short, it might clue people into the joke. And not making a male version makes the intent obvious.

Except most plus size models aren't overweight and are pretty damn healthy.

I guess it depends on what you consider plus size, typing plus size models into google images brings up alot of different body types. However the poster that I quoted sounded as though he was looking for women who are reaching into, or are in an unhealthy weight situation, more so when he goes onto to say that he's looking for BBWs.

If people wish to be overweight, thats their business, but I don't think it's something to be rewarded.

I see nothing wrong with that shirt. It's clear critics don't have a sense of humor. And you certainly can't pin some anti-female agenda on Nike of all people. Outrage unwarranted.

Isn't the message empowering to women? "Yea, I'm gold digging: by busting my ass off and competing at the highest level to beat the competition through my own abilities!"

It's not like this was the shirt they made the US women football team wear after they won the final. People who buy this can probably read, can't they?

Nike spokesmen responded, "Now we ain't saying somebody wearing this shirt is a gold digger, but they ain't messing with no broke, [broke]."

Yeah, a couple random Twitter users took offense. Long shot from "everyone," no?

Nah, I don't think it'll sell all that well either, because the pun mostly makes sense during Olympic time, I just don't think that if 100 random women saw the shirt, only 10% would get the reference.

I said 90% of people who buy the shirt, not 90% of women.

I think the problem is that it's too subtle, like Mudkips said the tiny Nike logo is the only thing keeping this from something you'd find in a shitty novelty store in your town's touristy area. I agree putting a medal on it would make it better. Make it look nicer too. I think it seems tasteless mostly because of the way it's presented, you could take the slogan and make something good with it.

Haha! Is that a real ad? How exactly does her ass herd other women away from the best clothing deals? Are they intimidated by it? Are they so caught up in thinking thin is beautiful that they're afraid to get near it? Feel like I'm missing something here.

There was a study recently that found out that women dont respond well to ads with athletic women in them. Men on the other hand respond well to ads with athletic men in them.

A "plus size" model doesn't support a healthy body image. Being "plus size" isn't healthy.

Nike is an athletics gear company and they show athletic people in their ads, and they manage to do it with a lot more class and a lot less sex than axe body spray or godaddy.com or herbal essences.

why would a sports company that promotes regular exersize use plus sized models?

Plus size models aren't necessarily fat. They support a healthier image than normal models. Tyra Banks would be considered plus size due to the current average model being size 0 while she was a 4-6.

Isn't the message empowering to women? "Yea, I'm gold digging: by busting my ass off and competing at the highest level to beat the competition through my own abilities!"

No. Taking one stereotype and applying to do a different group of women as a pun isn't really, just no.

Am I missing something? How is it offensive?

Not offensive so much as tacky and dumb.

I doubt any of the other shirts are made by manufacturers trying to pass them of as tributes to world-class athletes. So that's a difference.

Isn't the message empowering to women? "Yea, I'm gold digging: by busting my ass off and competing at the highest level to beat the competition through my own abilities!"

Do you really think anyone is going to take it that way? If you saw this girl a week ago on the street
jpxMy.jpg

your first thought would have been "Wow, she must take her sport very seriously, good for her"?

The shirt reminds me of the kid at my junior high who wore a shirt that said "Player." Fellow geeks thought it was funny, but I don't think anyone else ever complimented his awkward, obese ass on his clever video game shirt. I could see this being the same way, people in the know appreciate the intent but everyone else laughs at it.

I've seen women walking around with "slut" and "bitch" on their shirts, so... yeah this really doesn't get my outrage meter pumping. I totally understand why women would find it repulsive though. It's pretty insulting. But as I said before so are a lot of shirts women choose to wear.

Disappointed there is option for me to buy it.

Hahaha!!! I don't know if you remember, but you PM'd me that GIF after I requested that someone make it in whatever thread it was that someone posted the video. I tried to post it but it was too big to upload to imgur or to post on GAF, I forget which.

Full video.

Oh the huge manatee!

Is it anything the overly PC wont be offended by?

Care to point out who the offended parties are here, beyond the two random Twitterers in the story? Even Devolution, who I think embodies the overly-PC crowd for a lot of GAF, is not offended by the shirt. At this point people who enjoy pointing out that people are offended by everything far outnumber the people who are actually offended.

Exactly : Context. That Nike symbol combined with the popularity of these shirts provides enough context to anyone not totally clueless of the world around them that this shirt isnt meant to be serious. Its a play on words, big deal.

Personally I find it clever. The bigger picture I find Nike to be a pretty cool company, and them standing by their decisions and not just backing down* is also pretty cool.

*I know, free publicity as well.
