Nikkei: Nintendo to offer more low-cost software - 3DS remasters (?), more free demos

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Nintendo's comeback strategy includes expanding customer choice by adding more affordable software titles, President Satoru Iwata revealed in a recent interview with The Nikkei.

The Japanese company plans to re-create games for the Nintendo 3DS portable system based on past titles and smartphone offerings. Keeping development costs low will enable it to provide the content at prices as low as several hundred yen.

Free trial versions will also be increased. The idea is to boost the name recognition of new titles and drive purchases of the full versions by letting people play the first stages gratis.

Iwata also mentions to expect no price-cut in the near future, and expects Nintendo-like profits in the year ending March 2017.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Whenever a corporation uses the term "customer choice", 99% of the time it means they are trying to screw the customer as much as legally possible.

Let's hope Nintendo is the rare 1%.

So basically we're getting more P&DZ / P&D Mario Bros style offerings and more remakes / remasters here and there.

As long as they port F-Zero GX to something, I'm okay with this.

I'm hoping this means lower-budget but more ambitious games find their way more into the industry, it's been needed for the whole with the inflated development cost and number of closed studios, staff cuts, and studios it's affected. I think more companies will need to balance lower-cost and higher-cost budgeted games, and I'm all for it and happy if this is what Nintendo is meaningas. I hope other companies consider this, and I hope gamers embrace this.

Well, we see already that they are doing so. Can't say that i like it, but i can understand that they do this.

At least we're getting more Demos, thats always good.

I'm all for mid-budget games. Past generations have that and those were the games I really miss nowadays. Captain Toad is really great, and really excited for Rainbow Curse as well. Now if they can just make some mid-budget JRPGs...

F2P is the worst.

I don't think they're talking about mid-budget, seems more low-budget. I also miss the mid-budget titles of PS2 era and before.

With games like Captain Toad and New Super Luigi U I'm okay with this. I just hope they don't cheapen the brands and we end up with Temple Run: Zelda.

Despite calls to stimulate sales by cutting game system prices, he stressed that Nintendo has no plans to do so.

"We aim to return to profit levels more typical of the company in the year ending March 2017," Iwata said, suggesting that the market and shareholders anticipate 100 billion yen ($845 million).

I said this couple of months ago. Nintendo won't even bother with dropping Wii U price. Thing is just getting profitable and they have profit targets to hit.

Isn't Puzzle & Dragons Z a part of this initiative?

They licensed their IP to Gungho Online for a Puzzle & Dragons Mario Bros skin. Although similar as PD is a mobile game, that's part of the initiative that was suggested last year: licensing ventures (we've already seen the fruits of this with Hyrule Warriors).

vague as fuck but here come the conclusion jumpers

it's ok, just get preemptively defensive, cover your ears and assume the best

Can we ease up on the schadenfreude/defense force back and forth for a change?

We don't know what any of this means, but here's hoping it works out.

So it has come to this, poor little nintendo :(

They're still profitable. And there's nothing wrong with doing smaller games. Fill as many niches as you can afford to do.

Super Smash Dota

lol I don't think so but we've already seen the beginnings of where Nintendo is trying to go with the likes of Rusty's Baseball, Steel Diver & Pokemon Shuffle.

Low-cost software = digital software so one should expect as such. I'm hoping Iwata-san expands his idea a bit more at their Investors Meeting on the 17th.

more toad, more p&z, more steel diver? I am ok with this. for remasters, it depends. so far, with oot, ww, starfox and majora I was satisfied.

oh, btw, I assume Starfox xU will be at least episodic as revelation2 from capcom

I enjoy Nintendo's bitesize stuff that couldn't justify a full price release. The more the better tbh.

Isn't Rusty's pretty good?

Nintendo's foray into DLC has been reasonably good from my perspective, certainly in upper echelon of offerings. I'd hope they'd do similar for F2P.

I think the thread title is a bit misleading. I don't really see anything about F2P in that article. Either way, if it means stuff like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, then I'm okay with that.

That's what I am expecting as well. StarFox no longer has weight to command a 39.99$ price point and be supported at retail. Inviting people with small increments of 4.99$-9.99$ is the best way to go. Greater exposure, and improving margins.

the dude expected a 100 billion yen profit at the end of the last fiscal year, i think (and then missed it by a tad). that's what led to rumors/callings for his stepping down from the company all throughout 2013. those were fun times.

making such a bold prediction for march 2017 has me thinking new platforms are on the way next fall.

I think we're already seeing this with games like Captain Toad and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, full games labeled as "Budget Titles" and selling for 40$ instead of 60. They've been pretty good with their F2P ventures so far, Steel Diver Sub Wars and Rustys Real Deal have been pretty good in their offerings without going over the edge like most mobile F2P titles.

I could see something like the first episode being free, as per the initiative described in this article, and each episode including traditional on-rails gameplay as well as one of those gamepad focused games.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
and here's the title change.

There's no f2p mentioned in the article at all.
