Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

So playing Super Mario Bros. on 3DS confirmed that I hate the circle pad and d-pad for 2D platformers. I am dying. A lot. I run into enemies because the d-pad feels snappy and imprecise. I fall in pits because I can't turn left quickly enough to avoid death. Compare that to SMB or the SMA games on a GBA/DS d-pad and I'm fine.

I didn't have a problem with Mario Land 1 and 2, though SMB's controls are arguably tighter. I just can't play as confidently as I normally do.

Anyone else having this issue?

I played SMB when I got it as an ambassador and I had problems with it.

I started it up and literally died to the first goomba. I played SMB when I was 4 years old and I had to question myself whether it was because I'm older or if it was because of the controls. Definitely the controls.

So is anyone getting, or at least considering this?

It certainly looks fun based on trailers. It's kinda like a cross between Prof. Layton and Elite beat Agents.

Which should I get:

Mighty Switch Force, VVVVVVV, or Mutantt Mudd?

And anyone mind recommending some DSi titles? I haven't played any besides flipnote studios....

Hell yes, day one! Love rhythm games, and this one looks great! Hope we get a demo on the eShop in the U.S.

People need to start checking out Crush

The PSP version was absolutely epic and the 3D effect will do wonders to enhance the experience.

I cannot stress how amazing the game is. It's genius.

I'm gonna have to say Resident Evil Revelaitons is the best 3DS game available right now. The game looks, sounds, and plays great without a second stick (thank you gyro-aiming). Yes I enjoy it more than the Mario games.

I bought the PSP game about a year ago for 5 bucks. I don't know how people would feel about buying the 3DS version at 30-40 dollars for the same game with a different style. It is a fantastic puzzle game though and if you don't mind the price, it's a great purchase.

#1 thing I'd like for the system to get now is some form of online RPG. I'd LOVE for it to be a PSO game, but that's not on the horizon. Heroes of Ruin could be promising. I'd personally rather see a FF:CC game on the level of goodness that the cube version was from Square instead though.

Monster Hunter 3G is supposedly coming outside of Japan. So there is that to look forward to. Though I've never been a huge fan of the series. Much more into the dungeon crawl type thing verses the hunting the rare monster.

And anyone mind recommending some DSi titles?

Not recommended for those who are easily frustrated, but Art Style PiCTOBiTS is damn awesome. Really unique action/puzzler with great retro Nintendo music. Just $5 too.

I was pretty hyped for it, especially because of the AMAZING FMV animation, and just the general idea of more rhythm games, but after hearing about the preponderance of Laytonesque elements (and sub-par ones at that), I'm having second thoughts. Still hopeful though.

Both VVVVVV and Mutant Mudds are excellent games. I'd give Mutant Mudds a slight edge, but do eventually get VVVVVV.

VVVVVV's platforming is more like one big open-world environmental puzzle. Kind of like a pacifist Metroid.
Mutant Mudds is more along the lines of Kirby.

As for DSiWare, you must get Go! Go! Kokopolo. It's hard to describe concisely, but it's something of a reverse pacman. You lure woodland creatures from around the maze into a carnivorous plant. One of my favorite games of last year. It's really hard, though.

lol, screw other people ! i'm buying it again at 30-40$ ! probably more if it's the Japanese version :D

I intend on renting it, but it doesn't necessarily look like something I'd spend a lot of time with. I've been surprised in the past, though, and ended up paying Gamefly to keep various games. Either way, I look forward to fooling with it.

Well it might still not be for you. We do all have different tastes afterall. I liked the concept of it but the videos put me off because I didn't like the visual design of the characters. It was only the glowing praise from here that encouraged me to give it a go and I'm very glad I did. The characters are actually inoffensive and before too long it's just puzzles anyway. I guess it's a salient reminder that videos are very different from actually playing the game. It's such a shame that there is not a demo up for people on the fence like you to try. Nintendo still have work to do in fully embracing online, sadly. However, the eShop is gradually improving and this game is featured prominently in there at the moment [in the UK eShop anyway] so it shouldn't be a hassle to find.

If you are really not keen on the game why not wait? You won't lose anything. By then there might be a demo or you might have been able to try it on another 3DS. Unless you have nothing else to play that might be your best option. Please do try it at some point though and then tell us all how fantastic it is :P.
Yes good advice, I think I will wait awhile until I have not many games to play. I think I'll pick it up with Angry Birds Space

Anyone else holding out on Rayman Origins until the 3DS version? I was initially going to get the console version, but I decided to wait for the 3DS version. There's a demo coming soon too apparently, I hope the translation is on par with consoles!

Gonna try the demo and decide.
I know I know. OMG HD GRAPHICS!
But I think it looks like it could be a great handheld game.

Absolutely, I preordered it a while ago. I played the demo on my Japanese 3DS, it plays just like Rhythm Heaven which I enjoy a lot.

I know I need to edit the op some more but I'm going out of town for the weekend and I don't have a laptop or internet, just my iPhone and I'm not gonna attempt it on that tiny screen lol.

I feel the same way, I mean it's going to look gorgeous regardless of the platform, but I feel like it'd make a good handheld title.

Plus, I'm interested in seeing how they handled 3D.

I already have the Wii version... plus I want to pick up the PC version to support DRM-free PC gaming and to have the best looking version possible (though the Wii version running in Dolphin compares pretty well to the HD versions)... plus I want to pick up the Vita version since it should look damn amazing on that OLED screen... plus if the 3DS version looks great and runs at 60 fps in 3D I'd go for that version as well. Gah!

Thanks, yeah I am leaning towards Mutant Mudds right now.

Go! Go! Kokopolo actually looks really awesome! Love the animation and quick (looking) gameplay. Right now I'm looking at 10 Second Run, Might Milky Way, Shantae: Risky Revenge, and Go! Go! Kokopolo. I probably won't make a decision until next Thursday (in case Rolling Western comes out) but I'm looking at buying Mutant Mudd and a DSi Ware Game (two if I decide against Shantae, because I can pick up 10 Second Run along with the other purchases).

Any other recommendations are welcome. :)

I am! I really want to play the game on a handheld, so I'm waiting to get some hands-on with the Vita/3DS version to make sure they are up to par with the console versions. If not, I'll pick up one of the HD console versions.

The only thing I'm worried about is that we haven't seen footage/screen shots of Rayman Origins for the 3DS. I'm eagerly awaiting the demo though ... it's going to convince me or put me off lol.

Though, I figure it'll largely be the same as the console versions. Hoping for 60fps in 3D too.

Hmm I wasn't intending to get the 3DS Rayman Origins, but if the 3D is done right, that could be a seller for me. I generally like how 2D games project in 3D so it could very well be just the thing. Otherwise... I'll probably get it on Vita. Assuming I get a Vita at some point within the next few months. Come on, price drop. >_>

Get Rabi Laby. It's the best game based on Alice & Wonderland that came out last year. On the surface it looks like a pretty standard platform/puzzle game, but many of the puzzles you have to solve, by having the two characters interact with each other and other things in the environment, are quite ingenius.

Best game on the system is still Find Mii 2.

Yes, I've 100% Super Mario and have about 100 hours in Mario Kart 7, why do you ask?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

;)

Do it! Do it NAO!!! :x

I know where you live! *evil grin*

40 hours in and I am tending towards agreeing with you! Actually, after 100 hours of SM3DL I would probably say that that is the superior game, but right now, Revelaitons is my favourite 3DS game. I adore it and would have been happy if the price of admission had just brought me the Raid mode. A standalone Raid mode game a la Mercenaries please Capcom! At least include a Raid mode in all future releases e.g. RE4 3DS edition with added Raid mode, plskthxbai.

Best game on the system is still Find Mii 2.

This is also true.

N.B. There is no conflict here. I don't 'do' favourites. Why limit oneself? As my sister would say to many different meals "Oh, that's my favourite!" I apply that logic to my preferences :).

Some here might dismiss it out of hand [and without even playing it] as such a limited RPG that it is not worth bothering with but I don't care! It's fun, somewhat charming and HATS! Besides, StreetPass is wonderful so anything that demonstrates the worth of that functionality is alright by me :).

The actual rhythm games look pretty weak, so I'm wary about it.

I do wanna love it though.

Find Mii is just really well-designed in general, in my opinion. It's super simple, completely inoffensive, but has a surprising amount of depth and potential for strategy. Despite getting it at launch, the first 3DS game I "bought" was OoT 3D. Still got plenty of use out of thing thanks to the built-in software.

I'd say out-of-the-box the 3DS provides the most impressive amount of content of any system to date. Granted, I haven't had a chance to play with the Vita yet, but from what I've heard, its built-in software doesn't seem nearly as substantial or compelling.

I'm holding out. In fact, this is becoming a trend for me with more and more games. I'd rather have most of them in stereoscopic 3D and on a handheld whenever possible, as long as it's handled with care by the developer. Bottom line: once I play a game in 3D, I can't go back to 2D cuz it feels inferior, so I just prefer all my games in 3D when possible.

I held out on the console versions and bought the Vita version , but will likely get the 3DS version when it comes out in Japan as it's part of the Ubi 25th anniversary promotion where a selection of games will be 2,500 yen rather than the usual 5800 yen RRP - which is insanely cheap for Japan.

Throw in Amazon discount and that's down to about 2000 yen - a third regular price basically. So i'll be able to do some comparisons. As people have mentioned - will be interesting to see how the 3D version and the vita version stack up. Game has an amazing art style and there's lots of opportunity for 3D to make a difference to the game.

was like that for a short period of time with PS3 versions > X360 versions if they supported 3D, or if i could get my dumb ATI card to actually frigging work with my 3D monitor. But i'm passed it to be honest. A good game is a good game and whilst i like 3D, it's not a clincher anymore. If two games are identical and one is in 3D - of course it's going to be a factor though :)

Wut... Is that on the eShop.

e : oi nevermind, I've seen it. And Madness Returns was better lol.

Well, there's at least 4 on that list that I'm likely to get.
And we definitely haven't seen every game announced yet that's coming in the next few months.

I'll probably bite on Rayman Origins, Rhythm Thief and Spirit Camera if reviews are positive.

Saying that, I still have to go back and check out Starfox and Ghost Recon.

Just started Tales of Abyss. Played it a few years back. Put in about 12-14 hours. Got sick of the load times on PS2, but man, this is so much better. It looks and feels exactly the same, albeit in 3D -- which is pretty good in my opinion -- but I think I prefer the feel of the 3DS circle pad over the PS2 controller, believe it or not. Definitely a game worth sinking $40 into if you haven't already played it. I'm just renting it myself, as I still own the PS2 copy. But this was worthy of a port, I think, and Namco did a good job so far as I can tell.

It's funny how so many review scores conflict with my own personal opinion. I also have the PS3 version of SSFIV and love it, but pound for pound I'd say ToA offers a lot more value on 3DS than SSFIV does. It took me all of five minutes to realize I had no interest in playing that on 3DS, yet reviewers lapped that shit up.

SSF4 is awful on 3DS, the controls make it unplayable. The online seems broken too.
