Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

Since I have nothing better to do, I thought I'd post what games I own and briefly say what I think of them.

Ridge Racer 3D. It has some frame rate dips and the visuals aren't going to wow anyone, but overall this is a very solid racer. The 3D is actually pretty nice and the gameplay is rock solid as well. Probably spent more time on this than any other 3DS game. Pretty cheap these days too.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D. The upgrade on the visuals is worth a purchase alone, but it's also a must buy because this is classic Zelda. And it holds up very well. Frankly I could take the 3d or leave it on this one, but mostly found it distracting. But your mileage may vary. Excellent.

Kid Icarus. This may be the system's best game so far. Even though the controls take some getting used to, overall this is a fantastic title. It's challenging, it sports some incredibly trippy visuals (at times), and it'll keep you engaged for quite awhile. Plus, online play. Honestly I wish I could say more but I haven't put enough time into it to give any knowledgeable insight. But it's one fantastic game.

Nano Assault. Budget title, but this game does some interesting things visually with the 3D. When I show off the 3DS, this is the game I use because it's pretty interesting some of the things this 3 dimensional take on schmups does. It'll start as an almost Super Stardust clone as you move about planets eliminating enemies, but then you'll find yourself zooming through caverns (on rails) in a 1st person perspective. I really like this game, though I have to say I absolutely suck at it. I found it pretty challenging.

Resident Evil - The Mercenaries 3D. Odd that I have this game and not the superior Revelations title. (I just haven't gotten around to it yet.) I don't know if I'd recommend this one, even though playing Mercenaries mode is always fun. But that's all this game is, and it's odd a game that's usually relegated to "bonus mode" status actually is it's own game. If you can find it cheap, there's fun to be had, but I wouldn't pay more than 20 bucks for it. Oh, and remember - if you buy this used, there's no way to reset it back to the factory defaults. Which means someone else's game save will be there - and until you beat their scores all of those will still be there as well. Overall, not your best choice of 3DS titles.

Super Mario 3D Land. In a word - awesome. Actually, this gives Kid Icarus a run for it's money when talking about best 3DS title. This was (I think) one of the top 5 games in 2011 across all platforms. It may not be apparent at first, but the mastery of design that went into this game is pretty fucking amazing. There are so many hidden things in this version of Mario, I'm convinced people will still be discovering them in the years to come. The 3D is masterful, and arguably the first 3DS game where it's actually necessary. This should be at the top of any new 3DS owner's list when considering what games to buy. Amazing.

Mario Kart 7. I think this may be the best Mario Kart ever made. Overall, yes - this is still the same Mario Kart you've played before, but Nintendo threw a few new wrinkles into the design of the courses, and those that feature (initially) hidden underwater areas, I'd put up against any other MK game. Online, there are some glitches that cheaters love to exploit, though a patch is supposedly coming soon. But if you love Mario Kart as a series, this is a fantastic addition to the franchise.

Devil Survivor Overclocked. Haven't played this much, but this is essentially Devil Survivor (1) for the DS with additional content and a 3D cg opening. The rest of the game, as far as I know doesn't even sport 3D visuals. Though I'm kinda fine with that. This includes a new scenario which the original did not, and for people unfamiliar with the game play, this is basically a strategy rpg with an interesting world and an interesting story fans of Shin Megami Tensei have come to expect. Not a lot of rpg's on this system yet, but this is a good one to start with. Though honestly, I've only played a bit of the original on DS.

Tales of the Abyss. Another 3DS rpg in my backlog. But it's a good port of the PS2 version with 3d visuals. The shortened load times from the original is reason enough to upgrade to this version, though I found some of the text to be fairly small and hard to make out. But it should be noted I do have less than adequate eyesight, so your mileage (again) may vary. Great action rpg.

Spirit Camera. I have not actually even opened this one up yet. But it's a spinoff of the Fatal Frame games, but it's not a traditional FF game at all. Hard to say one way or the other whether you should buy, but as a Fatal Frame fan I felt the need to pick it up. (I want a sequel or the remake of #2!) So the jury's still out on this. For me, anyway.

Thanks, bud. Hm, I'm unaware of two snap backs, I dont want to force it atm, so it's fine.

Glad to hear everything sounds "normal".

Now, I have a 1 year warranty... is that Nintendo standard? If anything goes wrong, I'm covered for the whole year?

My pleasure :).

Don't worry, you wouldn't be forcing it. The 3DS top screen is designed to click into place into two default positions. Trust me :). Of course you may also tweak the angle of the top screen so that it is not in either of those positions but because it won't be clicked into place it may more easily be knocked out of position. Have a play around with varying the angle of the top screen once it is open and you will see what I mean and that there is nothing to worry about. Remember, Nintendo makes their hardware to survive the rough and tumble of children so your careful usage won't cause you a problem :).

It is for the UK but I cannot speak for other territories but I would imagine it would be the same. If you are not in Yurop though I would recommend that you double check this for your own peace of mind. I just had my launch unit returned to me by Nintendo because I sent it in for the top screen scratching issue and after repair I got a new 1 year warranty. So theoretically one could keep doing this, if necessary, and get a rolling warranty.

what's the general consensus on Ketzal's Corridors around here? It's barely been mentioned, and not for awhile now. It looks interesting/different, but I don't really wanna waste money on something I will pick up and play for a few hours & then never look at again.

It seems to be positive but I haven't played it so I can't give you my thoughts. However, there is a demo of its predecessor 'Thruspace', which shares the same essential gameplay mechanic, in the WiiWare section of the Wii Shop. If you have a Wii you could try that to see if you like the gameplay enough to give Ketzai's Corridors a try. The 3DS game seems to be more fleshed out and interesting than the Wiiware title though.

I ordered the Nyko Power Pack from eBay. It arrived today. It works perfectly with UK consoles.

One of the small things that you might not have mentioned or noticed is they also scaled the game so everything looks right for the 3ds which has a resolution increase over the ds. So it's not just the OG DS game blown up on the 3ds screens. I'm not sure if they increased the assets or just did a proper scaling job though.

I felt like reviews glossed over this fact as well because playing the OG version on the DS in full screen definitely has the blown up picture problem.

So I recently got Bit.Trip Saga & Kid Icarus Uprising. And both are really really good. Never played a Bit.Trip game before so I was really impressed. And Kid Icarus is surprisingly funny and just generally charming and awesome.

I've got a problem now though. My 3DS circle pad is busted. It's in, as far as I can tell, physically good condition but it keeps drifting up and when I tried to calibrate it, it took ages to respond and the reticle wouldn't centre. It was way higher than it should have been. I've got enough 3DS coming later in the week that I won so if I can't find a fix, I'll transfer my stuff over and then send it off for repair but still... Anyone know anything I can do?

Death at you wasting time with such games and not having a copy of Revelations.

That game is FIYAH.

If anyone was interested in Tetris Axis, it's down to $15.92 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002I0EPBA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I think I have all the 3DS games I want at the moment (until Summer, of course) so I'll be picking up a few DS games. I have my eyes set on The Dark Spire and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Can't get enough of these dungeon crawlers. A few GameStops have used copies of these games so I'll try my luck later today.

How good, or bad, do DS games look on the 3DS? Considering getting DQIX and Spirit Tracks since they are both so cheap.
You can run them native but the viewable area will be small. Interpolated is OK ever since they fixed the washed out colors. Mileage may vary from game to game though.

Mileage does vary. I am fine with most games. Played the majority of Solatorobo full screen on 3DS, and parts of Radiant Historia both native and full depending on my mood.

I just...I dunno. It's not a big deal to me!

I am assuming native will crop the screen to the size of the DS? If so, I watch 1:33.1 movies all the time on my widescreen tv and have no problems.

I just played the Rhythm Thief demo, expecting nothing. Thoroughly enjoyed what I played. Does anyone here own it? Is the game as solid as the demo suggests?

Edit: Holy crap, it's expensive!

i don't have revelations either, i was gonna get it but i couldn't get it at launch, so now i feel i must wait for a price drop

I wouldn't expect one if they follow suit like they did with Mercenaries. That game dropped price once, and it was only a $10 US drop. Revelations still hasn't seen a drop (I could be wrong, going by what I see every week).

At most a third of the game is like the demo. The rest is a boring adventure game that doesn't just hold your hand but drags you along the whole way through.

It's going to be a while before I pick up another retail 3DS game. Interested in Heroes of Ruin and maybe Mario Tennis Open but they are a ways off. Still not sure about Mario Tennis. I wish there was more to it then just playing matches. Is there at least some tournament mode in the game? Do the Mario sports games in general have the cheapness that can be found in Mario Kart games or are they more fair in how the AI behaves? No equivalents to the damn blue shells?

Fuzzy looking is the best way I can describe it. When going back and forth between my 3DS and DSi with Dragon Quest 9 and Radiant Historia that is the key difference. The smaller screen is another thing but that isn't that big of a deal. How the picture looks is the biggest problem. If one has a DS, DSLite, DSi, or DSiXL I suggest they keep it if they have DS games or still plan on picking up DS games. The games just look better on it. At least until they perhaps start offering DS games on the eShop. I would assume at that point they might be tweaked to look better on the 3DS screen.

Ghost Trick looked fine on the 3DS, but then again I never tried it on my DSi so ignorance is bliss in this case.

Meh... the story is nice. it's like a layton game with rhythm games instead of puzzles.
and you fight Napoleon... I mean... Napoleon.

Ugh, 3DS owners are the pits, lol.

Revelations is a full $40 game just like Mario Land and Mario Kart, and I'm sure you have both.

I bet you bought Ocarina as well, DIDNT YOU?

I enjoyed Revelations plenty, but it's not in the same category as Mario Land and Mario Kart for me. You'd really have to be into Raid Mode (the best part of the game) to reach maximum enjoyment, because the single player campaign was pretty boring through my eyes (no exploration, although they dangled the hope of it there early on). So I don't see why not blowing full price on the game would be a crime, if you'd rather spend it on a Nintendo first party title. And I've still put more hours into Mario Land, even given how 'short' it is, and many many more hours into Mario Kart than Revelations, so for my buck, they are both far and away worth the full price.

Haven't had any issues playing DS games on the 3DS. Sound quality is apparently better and it's preferable to use the circle pad for some games.

Mario Kart 7 has led me to the unfortunate realization that I'm simply over Mario Kart. I recognize its quality, but I have no motivation to play it at all. Wish I could get the same kind of enjoyment out of it as I did MK DS and Double Dash, but it just ain't happening... sigh. :(

Yeah, I'm trying to enjoy Wipeout on Vita right now, and while it looks amazing and I love the PS3 version, it's not doing much for me. Feels overwhelming on a handheld and not much different than the PS3 version.

Oh man, Mario Kart memories...I beat the game on NDS and my sister erased all of the data ._.

Best Buy next week:

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars and Rayman 3D, $11.99 each.

GR:SW is definitely worth checking out at that price. Can the same be said for Rayman 3D?

Funny. I'm pretty sure I listed MK7 in my top 10 games of last year, but I haven't put much dedication to it lately. Back in my college days my friends and I used to have MKDS races all the damn time and I miss that a lot. I only know two other people personally with a 3DS.

I really want to hook up with GAF for some MK7 and KI:U multiplayer some time. I just hope I don't show up too late. :lol

So, after asking for opinions on a redesign in this topic, I decided to get a 2nd hand 3DS and just sell that once the redesign hits. Turns out I got real lucky and found one close to my hometown for just 160 EUR. It even came with Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and a game I wasn't interested in but got for free anyway (Cradle of Rome 2), a carrying pouch, extra stylus and 2 eShop games. All for the same price as the barebones 3DS costs over here, so I'm very happy with the deal I got! It's only 4 months old too (2 years warranty) and doesn't even have a single scratch on it. :D

Still waiting for a new game by Yoshifumi Hashimoto - Dragon Marked for Death.

It’s not Muramasa, but I’m working on a 3DS title that has really incredible 2D visuals while taking full advantage of the 3DS’ capabilities
March 15, 2011

"Grand Knights History has been in development for a long time, but Dragon Marked for Death has been in development for even longer," I said while speaking to Grand Knights History producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto.

"Dragon Marked for Death is still in development. Right now we are working on the network features. It’s coming along quite well, it’s just that we’re not at a point where we can announce anything."

The game changed platforms, but Hashimoto confirmed exclusively to Siliconera that Dragon Marked for Death will be a Nintendo 3DS game. "The online is going to be amazing, but we can’t announce anything else right now, though."

Dragon Marked for Death is being developed by Mega Man 9 developer Inti Creates.

Finally got around to using the eShop for the first time-- I cannot find the NES Zelda games to buy...still only part of the ambassador program, or am I missing something?

If you're using it for the first time, then that probably means you don't have Pushmo. You need Pushmo.

It's out in the eShop in Europe. Not in America don't think. In either case, the superior Link's Awakening is on there.
