Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Does anybody play their DS games on their DS instead of the 3DS? I just recently got Dragon Quest IX, and for some reason I prefer playing it on my DSi instead of my 3DS.

Sometimes. I've been playing them more on my 3DS as I got tired of putting my DSi in my bag. I wish they could have addressed this problem.

I'm trading in some games and going to get two 3DS games. I'm definitely going to get Kid Icarus, so that's one in the bag, but I'm not sure about the other. I've floated around getting RE: Revelations, Tales of the Abyss, Star Fox, or Mario Tennis Open. I think the general concensus is that RE:R is the best of the bunch, correct?

HALP

Is there anywhere I can see what games I have that support Spotpass? Like there is for your 12 Streetpass games. Is there a limit? I just got DoA in the post and booted it up to activate Spotpass, in case they send out those costumes again. I'm right in thinking I don't need the cartridge in the system to receive Spotpass data, right?

@Tim-E - Resident Evil is probably the "best" game there, but I would grab a copy of Tales of the Abyss whilst you can. Particularly if you haven't played it before.

Yeah, get Revelations. That and Kid Icarus will give you dozens upon dozens upon dozens upon dozens of amazing gaming time.

Resident Evil if you enjoy the Raid Mode / Mercs style play. I found the single player game to be terribly boring, and all the 'they restored the survival horror!' aspect is overblown. It's linear and none too exciting. Raid Mode however, along with all the weapon customization is a lot of fun.

Personally, I'd take Star Fox out of the bunch. Star Fox 64 is far and away a 'better game' than RE:R for me, and even looks better for the most part if you wanted to show the system off. But if you've already had your fill of the game on the Nintendo 64 and Virtual Console, you might want something new.

One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP2 - July 27 (Europe)

Namco Bandai has announced One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP2 for Europe today. The 3DS title hits European store shelves on July 27.

One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP2 features action gameplay, over 12 playable characters, 15 bosses, and more.

The first One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP was released in European territories earlier this year. Whereas Japan received one full, complete product, Namco Bandai decided to split the European release into two episodes.

My vote goes to Tales.

And are you trading into GameStop? If so, you could probably get a lot more money by using the friendly Buy/Sell/Trade thread ;-)

I'm trading to Amazon, which should be fine for me.

I'm kind of leaning toward Tales because I've seen how difficult it is to find some JRPGs not long after they release. I'll probably always be able to find a copy of RE.

Mudds, 3D Classics Kid Icarus.

And remove questionable games like Mario & Sonic.

Maybe add a DSiWare section.

.....Huh? 3D Kid Icarus isn't very good. At all.
The only essential 3D Classic is Kirby's Adventure. The rest are all middling to poor.
In my opinion of course :)

Star Fox is the best game but I'd go for Tales.
Definitely pick up Star Fox on the cheap though!

I just got a 3DS. Any tips for a new user.

I would also like to know how the 3DS' screen fair. I heard that there are issues with the screen getting scratched when its closed. Do I need a screen protector for both screens?

Just slip a single-layer microfiber cloth in between the two screens when you close it. It won't interfere with sleep mode and the screens will be safe. The bottom screen does do minor damage to the top screen over time.

Oh, and buy Pushmo right now. You can thank me later.

Depending on your tastes, I would get RE:R and replace Kid Icarus with Tales or Star Fox. Kid Icarus is interesting but hasn't really captivated me. If you're anything like me you'll get more time out of RE:R and Tales. Star Fox is great if you can squeeze it in.

Mario Tennis is a bummer for me, there isn't enough single player substance to warrant a purchase. I think I might have to replay Tennis on the GBC or Golf on the GBA to get some sweet RPG action from a Mario Sports title.

I just got Pushmo and I love it! Thank you! It makes me want a Kirby game with the same graphics now.

Went to Gamestop a few moments ago and picked up Devil Survivor 2.

I've been playing Mario Tennis Open for a few days now. A few things I don't like:

-Earning coins ONLY through the mini games.
Would have been nice to earn coins with every mode. I believe you can earn coins during streetpass matches but it won't be much and it's a one time thing unless you constantly meet people and play them.

-Online leaderboards.
You see who's #1 as well as where your friends are but you can't see the FULL leaderboards. I like to see who's above me so I know what my goal will be.

-Online is VERY basic.
Either quick, first to 7 matches or extended, 2 game 1 set matches. That doesn't bother me. That's fine. What kinda bothers me is the fact you can't choose anything else. Not even doubles online?

-Rating system.
There are times where you win a match against someone who's rating is lower than you, but you end up still losing points.....what? lol. You should never lose points for winning. Also, there's at least 1 guy online (Brady I believe his name is) who likes to DC if he's losing. The good thing is, you still get some points because he DC'ed but it wouldn't be as much as if you were to win the match.

-Super Mario Tennis 2-x levels
There is a costume you unlock by getting a certain number of coins on level 2-4. The thing is, those 2-x levels are ONLY available during local multiplayer. Many people, like myself, don't have friends with a 3DS. I guess this is their way of saying, "go out and meet people."

There are 2 leaderboards: Monthly and Rating. You get monthly points whether you win or lose. You'll get more if the person has a higher rating than you. As for your Rating..that goes up and down. You start with 2000. I'm up to 2504 and my highest has been around 2600 but I can't get higher than that. I recall losing a match and my rating going down by about 49 points lol. Getting it back up takes some work. Apparently, they match you with people who have similar ratings.

You unlock items randomly after a single player match. Even though you unlocked it, you still have to spend coins to buy it.

You would think after those negatives I wouldn't be enjoying the game but it's quite the opposite. Mario Tennis online is a dream come true. 90% of the time, I play lag free games. It's addictive! I wouldn't say it's a must have game but it's a game you should pick up eventually. Toys R Us has a buy 1 get 1 40% off on all 3DS/DS/Wii games so if you thought about getting a game, might as well get MTO as the 2nd game.

If you DO have friends nearby to play against, you'll really enjoy this game. That would make this a must have. If you don't, you won't be missing out if you waited a few.

Should I do this? I sort of want to play this, but I'm not sure. I had a DS, but I skipped out late in it's life time. So I never played DS1 or DS1:OC either. I saw GS has DS2 for $20 right now, but I'm not sure.

Should I get DS2? Get DS1:OC instead? Just pass? I'm not THAT picky about DS games on the 3ds, but at the same time I feel like I should be getting a 3ds game not a DS game for my 3ds (Lame feeling I know).

I just wish we'd get some quality dang rpgs no matter the variant soon that are 3ds made as we still seem to be getting everything on the DS (for obvious reasons I know).

Yes, yes you should.

You don't need to play Overclocked first. As a matter of fact, I'd advise playing DS2 first. Honestly, because Overclocked implements more or less all of the changes found in DS2, DS2 will probably feel like the "older" game at this point. Don't bother with the NDS version of DS1.

You should play both games, though. Pick up DS2 for $20 at GS and then order Overclocked from Amazon for $30. Win-win. They feel very different from one another. While I prefer the presentation of Overclocked, I much prefer the cast of DS2. Also, blue > red.

I have Pullbox downloading :)

You're a good person. People like you and you're probably attractive.

Are the additions to Overclocked enough to make it worth grabbing if I played through the DS version (didn't do multiple endings or anything, just one)?

I don't think there's a way to see all the games that you have SpotPass activated for, outside of checking the settings of the individual games that is. But I doubt there's a limit like there is with StreetPass. The 12 title limit for StreetPass is likely because there might be too much data to transfer wirelessly via StreetPass if you have more than 12 StreetPass games. Since SpotPass data downloads on its own time, there doesn't need to be a limit. And no, you don't need to have the game card in your system for SpotPass to work.

For $30, I'd say yes. The presentation is a huge improvement over the original. The voice-acting is pretty good, with Spike Spencer's Atsuro being the standout among the cast. The art is all high-res and there are various new skills. There is virtually no 3D in-game, but I don't think you'll miss it. Don't need 3D draining the battery during long battles :p

Pretty sure there's no limit on SpotPass. All those downloadable trailers had SpotPass notices attached to them, and there were like ten of them.

I have 9 games that use StreetPass. When I reach a 13th game, Freakyforms will probably be the first to go since nobody where I live seems to have that one.

Decisions decisions...

I have a $25 gift card to Gamestop so that's why I was debating on all of this.

It's also worth noting I was also thinking maybe I should just wait till E3 and just play the shit I have right now. Hmmmmmmmm

Shinobi on Game Gear eShop or Shinobi 3DS card?

If its the GG one, its incredible. Used to play it years back but never beat Neo City.
If its the 3DS one, what makes it good?

The 3DS one.
My only other experience with the franchise is with Shinobi 3 and I love it.
This retains Shinobi style movement but has 2 main differences that completely change the flow of the game but somehow style retains the spirit. Sword strikes are the main combat moves instead of kunais, and flow fast and efficient, allowing to string good combos but not being a time waster, unlike something like Henry Hatsworth that just has terrible combat mechanics. Secondly the game has a parry mechanic in which if you press R just as an attack or projectile is gonna hit you'll parry it, neutralizing the attack and keeping the combo counter intact. It somehow reminds me of God Hands in place dodge and that's awesome.

Levels are long, but with well thought out check points. Enemy placement and levels are well thought out and enemy attacks are varied enough and keep you on your toes. Levels are also pretty ridiculous in a good way with Giant Sharks trying to kill you and stuff. Game's pretty hard on Normal but it's not impossible by any means. I dread Hell mode though.

Haven't beaten the game yet, but the horse stage has only come out once at the beginning and it's no more fun than Shinobi 3 vehicle stages.

Presentation wise it's a mixed bag, graphically it'll look at it's best decent and at it's worst hideous. More than being a DS game theory I blame it on Gryptonite not having good 3d modelers. While the lack of sprites is sad, at least the camara isn't static. Music is pretty good and there's also unvoiced short animations mid level and between levels to carry out the nonsenical story, but they're pretty well drawn and have a good style. Game also has a museum type thing were there's short info on other Shinobi games and amazing ilustrations from Gryptonite.

If you like action games and can find it ~$15 I can't recommend it enough. It's great.

If its the 3DS one, what makes it good?

Well, I wouldn't say it's incredible, but here's my thoughts on it:

The good:
-It's difficult. Not as difficult as the old games but still more challenging them most games in the 3DS's library.
-The scoring system. As you ninja everything, a multiplier in the corner builds up. With each level, your speed and strength increases, making for badass speed runs if you make good use of the Parry. If you get hit even once though, then your multiplier vanishes.
-"Achievements" that unlock stuff. Like new costumes, weapons, art, cheats, and music. Unlockable cheats, how I've missed you!
-Some of the music is pretty nice. Nothing mindblowing, but it's not generic.
-Play as Joe Musashi in Streetpass Challenges. One-hit-kills make a welcome return.
-Savable replays. Speaks for itself.
-Ever wanted to jump a gigantic robot shark?

The bad:
-Cheap level design in some areas.
-Pattern-based boss fights are fun but rather simple. Bosses have few attacks.

The ugly:
-DS-quality visuals do not impress.
-Art style is rather uninspired.
-Story makes almost no sense. Just ignore it and kill things.

Overall, I liked it. If you're looking for a difficult platformer with replay value, this might be it if you can overlook the story and visuals.

Well I was thinking maybe Fire Emblem would get a Summer release date since that game isn't new, but rather just not localized yet. I'm not really into KH so that's a no go.

IDK... I'll think it over...

It would be amazing if we saw Fire Emblem this summer, but I don't see it happening. I'm thinking a Fall release at best. If the Gods deign to smile upon us, maybe we'll get it before Europe. Just to spite them.

Cool, thanks for sharing. I'm not gonna bother because I'm hopeless at art and all that, but good luck to others!

What are folks looking forward to for the 3DS for the next couple of months?

I tend to stick to a 1 game per-system-per-month thing at the moment (as best I can anyway, hah), and I'm really loving the 3DS at the moment. Just bought Mario Tennis Open which I have high first impressions of and got Theatrythm on order for July. Not sure about June though, and not sure what's coming in August and beyond, although suspect E3 may shed light there.

How is Heroes of Ruin shaping up? Looks quite neat to me but is there any hype for the game? I've also never played a Kingdom Hearts game and know nothing about the franchise, but am intrigued by DDD even though it doesn't have a firm UK release yet as far as I'm aware.

I say skip June (or pretend Theatrhythm is a June release) and get Kingdom Hearts in late July. August has NSMB2!

edit: DDD is releasing in July in Europe afaik
edit2: July 30th!

Getting Mario Tennis Open in the next few days, and Theatrhythm/Kingdom Hearts 3D are definitely my next two big purchases. After that, it's NSMB2.

Pretty much, my plan of action for the next few months seems to be:
May: Mario Tennis Open (got and enjoying).
June: 3DS version of Lego Batman 2
July: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy
August (well, technically July, but it comes out the last day and I won't be getting it until August anyway, so...): Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Some time later (titles that should be coming out this year, but don't actually have firm release dates yet):
-Pokemon White 2 (technically a DS game, but I'll be playing it on my 3DS, so whatever)
-Epic Mickey: The Power of Illusion
-Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Also considering stuff like Latyon 5 and New Super Mario Bros. 2, but have to think about those some more first and see what else ends up being revealed at E3.

Mario Tennis Open

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure - July 10

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - July 3

Pretty lean unless we get a bunch of stuff from e3

Must admit I totally forgot about NSMB2. Not got much hype for that although I will 100% buy it when it's out.

May use June to pick up a couple of older games if Heroes of Ruin isn't looking too hot. I figure I could get Bit Trip and Mercenaries 3D for the same price as I'd normally spend on a new release. They're probably the two older/cheaper games I'm the most interested in adding to my collection at the minute.

Kingdom Hearts. The only two 3ds games that are announced that I care about(Power of Illusion and Adventure time) don't seem to be coming out until later this year.

Lego Batman 2
NSMB2
KH
FFTR
Epic Mickey
Zero Escape
BW2

What does one do when he's purchased too much software and doesn't commit enough time to play them? lol.

I try but I always get confused which game to start with.

Heroes of Ruin
Rhythm Thief
Kingdom Hearts

and maybe a triple dip on Rayman Origins when it comes out.
