Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

NSMB2 and all future retail digital releases will be sold in retail as gift cards in NA, right?

It's pretty much the deciding factor if I get NSMB2 digital or not. I need to have something physical about the game :p

That'd make sense. I'd like if they did that as well. I'm not really a fan of using my credit card all that much.

I bought Tales of the Abyss today. Am I going to regret this? Game seems pretty divisive but I wanted a beautiful JPRG with a good story and open exploration, which few of them have.

I got it in that Best Buy sale a little while back and I've been playing with the idea of exchanging it ever since. The only thing stopping me is that I can't find Theaterhythm anywhere.

That's what they're doing in Japan: you can buy right off the eShop or buy a gift card with the game code in a store that can be discounted as the retailer pleases (expires after 150 days tho)

If that's being done in America then I will be going digital for titles that I can play in quick bursts (NSMB2 for coin rush, Art Academy, Animal Crossing, Onitore, Scribblenauts, Layton, etc.) and leaving physical purchases to the more meaty games (LM2, Paper Mario, Castlevania, Epic Mickey, Kingdom Hearts, etc.)
It's why I want the cards... that way, even for digital titles I have physical pieces of the game for the collection :)

Random question. I'm heading off on vacation in 2 weeks. Debating whether or not to take my 3DS or my Vita. I don't plan on playing a ton, but I like having something for the 18+ hours in the air / in airports and I like having something for train trips or ferry rides when I get there. My Vita is chock full of great games. That's why I'm leaning towards it. However, I've been having a lot of fun with Pokemon Conquest lately as well as some Gameboy games. So here's what I'm wondering. What game am I missing that are "must haves"? Something that might tip things in favor of the 3DS. Here's what I have currently.

Kirby Mass Attack - DS
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - DS
Theatrythm
Pushmo
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: March of the Minis
Cave Story
Dark Void Zero
vvvvvv
Mutant Mudds
Metroid II
Super Mario Land 2
Super Mario Land 3

I've played a ton of other DS games in the past so what I'm looking for here are other gems of the eShop, other indie games or 3DS games I'm overlooking. A big reason I'm asking is that I never really bought anything on the DSi. And the eShop buries content as good as any online store already.

I finally got around to opening my copy of Cave Story 3D. Holy shit it looks pretty good. Some of the 3D is a bit jarring but overall it looks nice. A good upgrade to one of my favorite games. <3

Why not take both? They're both pretty small machines

As far as must haves that you are missing...

Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
LoZ Ocarina of Time 3D
Star Fox 64 3D
Kid Icarus Uprising
Kingdom Hearts 3D (comes out Jul. 31)
Mario Tennis Open
Resident Evil Revelations
Donkey Kong (GB VC - eShop)
LoZ Links Awakening DX (GBC VC - eShop)
Mighty Switch Force (eShop)
Colors 3D (eShop - fantastic if you love to draw)
Aura Aura Climber (DSiWare)
PiCTOBiTS (DSiWare)
Spotto! (DSiWare)

Just off the top of my head, these are all great

The reason not to take both is that I'm going to Europe. So there are other things to do there. Also I'm already taking a Kindle and a Kindle Fire.

I know I'm being a bit lazy, but actually I've had a bit of trouble finding anything concrete while on my phone. What does Nintendo have scheduled for the rest of the year in NA besides NSMB2?

Of the top of my head:
Paper Mario
Luigi's Mansion
Professor Layton

DSiWare:
Portable Shrine Wars
AuraAura Climber
Mr Driller
Bomberman Blitz
Star Ship Defense

eShop
Order Up! (I found it to be addictive)
Dillon's Rolling Western (Unless you're a lefty)
Zen Pinball
Mighty Switch Force
Mole Mania (VC)

Retail
Heroes of Ruin (I and the 9-10 other gaffers that have this, love it)
Rhythm Thief (Wash yourself clean of the sin of buying Theaterhythm over it) :P
Tales of the Abyss (If you like Tales games?)
Resident Evil Revelations (Still my favorite game on the system)
Kid Icarus Uprising (Unless you're a lefty)

So, that should take care of you plane-ride...and a good chunk of time when you return home.

Whenever I take a DS/3DS on my hols, I take a Fire Emblem, an Advance Wars game (dual strike, because I prefer the war room battles), a Castlevania and an Etrian Odyssey. Sorted. ;-)

All Nintendo-published games will be released on the eShop as well, starting with NSMB2. Third party games, maybe.
I know that they'll be on the eShop too, but will they be like Japan where you can get a gift card with a dl code for the game?

I want to have some type of physical piece of a game and a card is enough for me

I picked up Mario & Sonic at the London Olympics real cheap the other day, and I have to say that I'm enjoying it alot more than I thought I would. The games themselves are pretty fun, at least. And seeing London landmarks in Nintendo-style 3D is a novelty in itself. Definitely a worthy Olympics souvenir!

Having said that, Story Mode is a chore. The "fog" that is integral to the story is a fucking eyesore, and everything moves along far too slowly.

Still, I'll stick with it. At least until my Olympics Fever has worn off. Gotta get them medals!

As far as we know, yes. :)

Is Cave Story good or should I just get it for $10 on Steam?
You could also wait for Cave Story+ to show up on the eShop as Nicalis said it would happen soon.

Of course, in Nicalis language, "Soon" can mean "Tomorrow", "In Ten Years", or anywhere in between.

Oh yeah, it could also mean "Never".

So I emailed Nintendo regarding the digital release of New Super Mario Bros. 2. I wanted to know what happens if your 3DS breaks. Is it tied to your account? Or not? Or what? This is the response I got.

Nintendo Of America said:
Hello Haziq,

Thanks for writing in. It's great to hear you are interested in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS. We here at Nintendo are also excited for it! In regard to your concerns about if your system had broke after downloading the game, let me reassure you that we can preserve your Nintendo eShop account as long as you have us repair your Nintendo 3DS--no matter how long you've owned it.

Conversely, if you decide to purchase a replacement Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo eShop data would not transfer over. That is unless you perform a system transfer. More details about the system transfer can found in the link below:

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/sy...ansfer games&submenu=ctr-ht-software-transfer

To answer your other question, when you download a game on the Nintendo 3DS, it gives the system the license to play that game. The game license is attached to your system, which is attached to the Nintendo eShop. Additionally, it is not tied to any account such as your Club Nintendo account.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reply to this message.

Sincerely,

Dudebro
Nintendo of America Inc.

So, I'll be picking it up at retail then. God damn Nintendo, why is this stuff not tied to an account yet!?

Expected

I expect accounts by the end of the year at least, which will hopefully just be added to your current eShop account. I'll still be going digital (probably)

Hopefully the account system allows usage for more than 1 3DS or WiiU/3DS VC crossplay or something, but HA that'll never happen :(

I heard they were gonna add an unified account system to the 3DS and Wii U. But I'm not entirely sure if I'm remembering it right. It was kind of vague anyways.

Also, Dudebro?

I'm a junior so i can't make a thread and i figured this was the best place to ask. Does anyone else have overheating problems with their 3ds?

End of the year seems way too early for 3DS accounts, but I think it will happen sometime in the first half of 2013. I just hope they are unified with Wii U's accounts, but that may be overly optimistic.

I would assume the log-in and account would be the same for both, one NiN account. Whether they share anything else is unlikely sadly :/

And 3DS accounts should be here by the end of the year. They need to be... buying full $40 games with no account protection is way too big of a gamble. They need accounts just for those, really. System Transfer isn't a good alternative IMO

They should be, but even the rumour suggested 3DS accounts would arrive after Wii U. I think it's too big a project for Nintendo to roll out all at once, they probably have their hands full just getting the infrastructure ready for Wii U.

Struck gold today! Tales of The Abyss for a reasonable price. First time I've actually seen the game in a shop too.

I also got it this week. So far, it's impressive. Like playing a PS2 RPG in the palm of your hands.

By "like" I mean "literally".

This is interesting. I can understand that there might not be a system in place to allow Club Nintendo to validate permissions between hardware without doing a direct transfer, but any hardware registered to Club Nintendo that you make an eshop purchase on will automatically register that purchase for you. So in a way there is already a unified record of what you own, just presumably they don't have any checks and balances ready to prevent someone finding a loophole and putting purchased eshop games on all their friend's systems. That's why Club Nintendo alone isn't enough for them to allow you to activate the games on your own, I'm guessing. In their minds, given the freedom to activate on your own, what's to stop you from putting the same account across every 3DS owned by someone you know?

They would need the account to be unified with one existing on the hardware, but the fact that it already exists server side and seems to work well enough is maybe a good sign that it won't take forever to implement. Would be amazing if it appeared on the 3DS not too long after the launch of the Wii-U.

i think i may be regretting buying my 3dsXL already after 2 days!

i bought it based on resident evil revelations (after playing my brothers copy) and mario kart which is great

but besides mario land 2, maybe street fighter 4 i dont think theres many games out/coming out that can get me excited i think my brother oversold it too me!

maybe i should've done more research or maybe im too boring
but im not that into zelda, icarus, pilot wings or rpgs

so whats left maybe metal gear solid and a bunch of virtual games

now if i had gone for the vita like i did plan too, i already know id love mortal kombat, street fighter vs tekken (tekken tag 2 if it comes out), LBP, assassins creed 3 when it comes out, resident evil vita if that ever gets made, modnation racer, little deviants, the gravity game (classic psp games compatible like GTA series)

help me gaff i there anything on the horizon worth shouting about for the 3ds? any classic DS games worth my time besides mario kart/mario land

TLDR! HELP convince me not to sell my first ever nintendo handheld, my 3DSXL or trade it in for a vita!

Just wait. Generally speaking, trading in your newly bought system is not a smart move and you'll regret it, or end up buying it back later. There's a lot of good eShop content to tide you over until better retail software is out; Pushmo (puzzle), Mighty Switch Force (quick paced action platformer), Mutant Mudds (early 90s style platformer), VVVVVV (platformer) the 3D Classics line, DSiWare and Virtual Console games.

There's also a number of fighting games already out on the system you might want to check out, since that seems to appeal to you. And be able to get for a good value now. Dead or Alive: Dimensions, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II, Tekken 3D: Prime Edition.

There's a slew of Mario games coming this fall too in NSMB 2, Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion along with third party games like Castlevania: Lord of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion and a load of games with 'TBD' dates.

So like I said, I'd just hold tight. And give games you may have no interest in (like Kid Icarus) a chance if you can ever test it out for a while. You may be surprised with the results.

I'm gonna pick up a magazine or two and see what this things got that i like, i shouldve researched first but after playing resi evil ' mario kart i bought it without a second thought
Im now gonna hold on to it

Don't ignore the original DS lineup either. Probably the most diverse lineup of any console ever released.

Not really related to software but -- does anyone have that Mario/Luigi 3DS case from Club Nintendo?

Any good? I only have the Club Nintendo pouch for the DS Lite/DSi/3DS.

Yeah, I don't know what it is. Maybe I'm just holding it wrong?

I can't use the Vita for more than like 30 minutes without getting cramps, especially when the sticks are required, which I find very awkwardly placed. I do get cramps from the 3DS as well, but far less often.
