Nintendo 3DS Games: what does this thing have?

Someone asked me to take screenshots of Metal Gear Solid 3d. It doesn't look good, and the shots look even worse hah. All of them are from the first few minutes, since I just got the game. (They are out of order too hah)

.

Thanks! Now we can finally compare the Vita and 3DS versions head-to-head. Wahahaha!

Super Late Edit: I guess I should add my thoughts here too.

The home console version of MGS HD is easily the best. It's gorgeous and it runs at a beautiful 60 fps. Plus it has Peace Walker. Controls are unchanged from the original games.

The Vita version of MGS HD is a great port. Runs at 30 fps and the graphics are close to the console versions. Controls are a bit different, most notably L2/R2 item/weapon swapping got mapped to the touch screen. There's some other touch screen and rear touch pad gimmicks I never bothered with.

The 3DS version of MGS3 is kind of interesting. Runs at 15 fps, textures are muddled, the grass is much thinner, and the grass pops out. Controls are quite different; the biggest new features are crouch walking, third person shooting, the ability to move and shoot simultaneously, and the removal of the stalking button.

If you want the best experience, get the home console version. If you want to play on a handheld, I'd recommend the Vita version. Its smooth framerate is sooo good; I just wish it had crouch walking. The 3DS's new shooter controls I don't really care about, 'cause that's not how I play the game anyways.

I read here on GAF (can't remember the thread though) that it was not particularly good and saw people complaining about it as well (for different reasons than MGS3D though).

It may be good, but still people sometimes complain about everything, so maybe I read the wrong opinions. :p

Which one of MGS HD collection? Is it for the Vita for the Xbox360?

I have one for the Xbox360 which is why the thought of buying MGS3D seem so pointless for me... It's not like they add any content to the MGS3D right?

Well, to summarize:

Pros: Portable, looks great on the OLED display, dual-analog control

Cons: Touch controls aren't great, unstable framerate in MGS2 (i.e., jumping from 30 to 60 fps depending on the environment), Peace Walker not included

Here's the OT if you would like additional information.

I heard the Vita port was really shitty though, does anyone here know which would be the less shitty version to get? I don't own a Vita yet but I would gladly wait if needed.
Wow what, I've heard nothing but the opposite. Vita version runs smoothly and looks great. 3DS version is bogged down by terrible framerate/slow-downs and its only redeeming feature is the ability to crouch-walk. Plus you get MGS2 in the same cartridge on vita as well.

Have not got around to playing shinobi yet, had it on my shelf for a while, this thread and the hardcoregaming 101 article have made me realise i need to pick it up and play it!!

I know the question was asked of kid Icarus or different games. What about kid Icarus or OoT 3D? I'ven ever played OoT before, does it hold up?

It absolutely holds up. It's not as good as the Zelda's that came after it, but it's still a great adventure with a good story, good pacing and fantastic level design.

Ill be streaming it sometime in the near future, hopefully hah. Need to just sit down and have some time to play it.

If you like intense shump style game-play you've got to get Kid Icarus. It has this crazy action game fun to it, it's one of the best games I've ever played. As you get more into it, the multiplayer really shines. Picking the best weapon and power combos is tons of fun.

Thanks for the advice, I went with OoT.

Has anyone played the 3DS port of WWE All Stars?! Looks pretty decent...

It is a very good port. It looks and sounds waaaay better than the PSP and Wii versions and is much closer to the HD version in quality. It even has all the DLC wrestlers on the game card and two new gameplay modes, Survival and Score Attack.

The only problem I have with it is that they mapped one of the reversal buttons to Up on the D-Pad.

It's also probably the only WWE title we'll see on the 3DS for a long time. :/
I wish Spike would made a 3DS Fire Pro title. Fire Pro Advance was my favorite GBA launch title...

On another note, I really like Snake Eater 3D. Sure it's not as pretty as the HD version, but I think the gameplay improvements make it an even better title. People like to complain, but the frame rate is never worse than it was on the PS2 version which I've beaten dozens of times...

This is great news. Are there plenty of unlockables, or is most of the content available from the start?

I was so disappointed in the mgs3demo, its jaggy heaven, bad fps and its just... no. I hope there will be a proper 3ds metal gear solid one time. Gotta buy mgs hd collection soon for ps3!

On a sidenote, why is there no easy options screen per game? Like pressing triangle on a game on ps3 to delete the demo. Why do i have to go in data management to delete it?

By the by, can you buy PAL games from Newegg? If they do indeed have free shipping to the netherlands and they sell PAL 3DS games I may have a good place for 30 Euro priced games... Considering the exchange rate.

Welp, no shipping to Europe. Nevermind!

Ugh... Can someone help me with an issue I'm having?

I'm trying to transfer my data on my existing SD card to a new SD card by netbook won't recognize it. It keeps saying I have to format it if I want to use it. I of course hit cancel because it would erase everything. 2 minutes pass and randomly the sd card is being read normally. I go and try to copy the files to the desktop and all is fine until near the last bit of transferring it gives me errors for every file. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. My SD drive works fine for every other card I try it on. If my card is corrupted or something, what would happen to all of my files/games on it?

EDIT: Nevermind. After 5 times it seemingly worked. :/

Africa Unleashed 3D
Am I a bad person for liking this game? To be honest, this is exactly the type of thing I want to be playing on 3DS. It's pretty bargain-basement, in every sense of the term, but I can't help thinking how enjoyable some higher-production value games of this manner would be. Hell if they just ported/rejiggered the (good) super scope stuff, or did a Point Blank game with stereoscopic, I'd enjoy that very much. Anyway, for what this is, I am enjoying it anyway, between controls & visuals..

Well, not my kind of game regardless of quality :P

So I always thought the 3DS screen was rather dim, especially compared to my absurdly bright DS Lite. I had used my friends' 3DS sytems, but had never done a side-to-side comparison until now... well, my 3DS even at highest settings is considerably less bright than my friends' units :/

Oh man. Early adopter problems. How about brining that awesome looking cobalt blue classic 3DS, Nintendo?

I don't suppose the Code of Princess - Full Trailer has been posted yet?
Nice video, haven't watched it yet!
I'm on the fence about this one... the character designs are good, and I like the genre, but in other videos it looks too damn slow. I'll wait for more detailed impressions before biting.

Also, I just started playing REvelations two nights ago. It's nice, but the pacing is awkward and sometimes the controls start acting up (maybe it's just me...). I hope the pacing picks up later (I'm just in the end of Chapter 3).
The concept of Raid Mode never sounded appealing to me, but I hope it's as good as everyone says.

I'll be posting some Code of Princess impression for sure, but I'll be getting it a bit later then day one since I chose free shipping.

Raid Mode is sort of hit or miss. It's fairly fun, but how much you get out of it will depend on how much you like looking for new, more powerful weapons and upgrades.

Did you order it from Amazon? iirc, release-date shipping is $1.

Oh... is this what we're calling it now?
What happened to Revelaitons :(
Damn, I forgot about that...
Actually, when my copy arrived, the first thing I did was look at the spine just to sigh disappointed because it was spelled correctly.

I look forward to reading them, then. I'm interested in the speed of the gameplay, the amount of content, and the online. I also hope there's a Japanese audio option, just like in Virtue's Last Reward (which I will be most likely using, or muting if it becomes too much of a hassle).
As for Raid Mode, I like doing that, so I think I will enjoy it (: I'll finish the main campaign first, though!

Newegg.
I don't really know how much release-day shipping costs there, but I'm usually not in a hurry to get a game so I always choose free shipping when I buy games online.

EDIT: How are you guys posting direct feed screenshots, anyway? o.o

Its only me posting screenshots really. I have my 3ds modified to add a USB port for video capture. I can do video as well :P

Ah, my bad then. :b
That sounds pretty handy. If it isn't too difficult to do (for someone who has a bit of experience in the area), I might want to do that to my Aqua Blue when I finally purchase an XL.

The guy who was doing it was selling them for 200$, which included the install since apparently they can be quite tricky to install, and he didnt want to deal with returns. But he stopped taking email orders, and is selling them on ebay, where it is going for 900$ or more, some of them including a new 3ds, some not. It is crazy!

I've still yet to play two of the games I picked up around the time of my 3DS (Steel Diver and Spirit Camera), but I did get to dig into my $5 copy of Pilotwings: Resort a bit.

It's an interesting game, as I find myself getting most nostalgic for my time with a rental of Pilotwings 64, and yet I can totally understand the frustration with the game as a launch title at full price. Having paid so little for it, it seems like a great bargain, and I'm curious whether Nintendo might—once the various retail copies being liquidated are off store shelves—release the game at a budget price through digital download. It doesn't sound like something Nintendo would do, but I think the game's just right for that model.

I just noticed that Layton 5 is listed on the USA eShop as "Retail only", but they announced on August that it'd be a dual release... I hope it's a mistake, because I already put the 40USD in my eShop account and I don't want to miss it day one.
I'm really looking forward to it, btw. I've seen very few trailers because of L5's —silly— tendence of putting late–game spoilers in them, so I know little about the story.

Nintendo should be doing this with pretty much every game, even third party stuff. They should implement an account system, and then they should release everything once it drops to $10 at retail.

Stuff like Ghost Recon and Street Fighter should be up by now.

I'm pretty sure every Nintendo game will be on the eShop.

Are you sure they announced Layton would be digital? I don't remember that. I expect it to be the last retail-only first party release though, except possibly Fire Emblem.

It's not coming to eShop in US, there hasn't been any confirmation about this. The announcement you heard was for Europe. In Europe, localization for Layton games is made dircetly by Nintendo, but in US it is made by Level-5 American office. That's the reason for absence of Layton game in eShop as well as localization differences like different dubs and puzzle names.

So, I was in another thread, and I was being talked into getting a 3DS. Is XL the best choice? My only concern is games being blurry due to increased size, but not resolution. I also have no idea where I would start, game-wise, as I never had a DS and haven't followed portable gaming news that closely since like the GBA. Also, how much life does this system have left in it? Like I said, I haven't followed this type of gaming in a while, so I don't know how Nintendo treats their lifespans.

The games shouldn't look blurrier, everything will just be... bigger and more prominent.

All of the good and all of the bad.

For most people I think XL is the wiser choice.

EDIT: Oh, if you've never had a DS, then XL is a must. 1:1 mode is brilliant.

Cool. So, is the OP meant to be a "Best-of" type of list, or what? I really am coming in here blind, as I haven't played handheld games since like the GBA, but I'm definitely interested.

(Related Sidenote: I thought that MGS 3D wasn't so good?)

This thing has several more years left in it, for sure. The DS had about 6 years before the 3DS released and it's still getting new games. The 3DS is only ~1.5 years old with a fairly nice library of good titles already, so right now is a great time to get one without having to worry about a successor while also having a nice selection of games to choose from.
