I think acquiring studios is a bad idea, since employee turnover is a huge risk and buying IP's is more lucrative.
I mean, what's to stop Kamiya or Inaba from leaving Platinum if they feel like they want to make games for other platforms besides Nintendo? They were owned by Capcom under the Clover Studios name and then ditched them because they wanted creative control.
Even if Nintendo bought Platinum and said "you have our funding, do whatever you want" the main staff members who make Platinum "Platinum" might leave eventually and then your left with a big name studio being a shell of its former self (see Rare, after being bought by Microsoft).
