Nintendo Dev reveals why Link's BOTW design doesn't feature a hat.

I actually went out of my way to unlock the
Tunic of the Wild set
before taking on Ganon because it felt weird not doing it in *that* costume.

Must've been awesome alongside with
the Sword that seals darkness.
Love the little addition to the cutscene you get prior the battle if you have it.

I actually dyed the Hylian Tunic and Hylian Hood green, like that it gives him a bit of a ranger look.

i still like the OG outfit, but the champion's tunic looks great. i've been rocking that+the hood like in the official art and loving it. it helps that it reminds me of WW link's blue outfit that you could use in new game plus. blue just looks good on link (it's also my favorite color, lol)

Been saying for years that Link needed to lose that goofy-ass hat. Huge turn-off for casuals. The Hylian outfit with the hood he gets in BotW is infinitely better. Dye the hood and tunic green and the pants tan or white and you've got the best Link outfit ever.

EDIT: Beaten by this guy:

Perfection.

I'm happy with the results, but that's a pretty silly reason considering how ridiculous you can make him look in-game if you want to... I mean, they even put a lu
chador
set in there lmao. Plus like others said, he looks just fine in the retro outfits, but eh, not that big of a deal.

They could have definitely made him wear the green tunic and still let you equip different clothes tho, and maybe they could have added another "true" hero tunic near endgame that had better stats or something.

Now I'm guessing they're completely getting rid of the classic look, so I wonder what he'll look like in the next game...

I can understand wanting to change it up but if they decide to remove the green pointy hat permanently after this game I will RIOT. I really don't care what this developer says, Link not having the hat as an option at the very least is like Mario not wearing overalls or Sonic not having red and white shoes. you guys might not like it but I really liked that hat :(.

He looks fine with the tunic and the hat is fine, it's just developers making silly excuse as the theme of the game is rebuilding yourself back up.

Link's hat is iconic and I bet you that it will return in future Zelda games.

Really it's not in? I don't buy the silly realistic explanation. Breath of the Wild ain't a bit realistic.

It's is in it via a the amiibo or as a reward for completing 120 shrine.

You had ample chances to get the Amiibo, especially the Smash bros Link at a low price it's only shot up because people are buying them to use in Breath of the Wild.

I paid £10.99 for Smash Link and I brought it when it was released along side with Smash 4.

I rock the blue tunic/soldier legs and that male
gerudo hairstyle
. I normally hate those buns/ponytails on males and want to cut them off with scissors lol, but it fits link perfectly.

Link looks like he's wearing Grandpa Joe's night cap, and in side profile it's not flattering at all. The old tech demo with that spider had the overly designed hat tip, you could tell they were trying to figure out how to not make it look like Peter pan.

Hylian Armor set died green with the Diamond Circlet looks really, really appropriate for the final battle IMO. It's like
this version of Link is the very last to fight to Ganon, and is decked out in full armor - with the color of the hero - in order to do it.

I'm personally bored of the green tunic after decades of it, and maybe they are too. I don't think an explanation is required especially when they put multiple green tunics in the game.

It'll all be back whenever they decide to embrace traditions and make an OoT-style game again.
These things come in cycles.

I've always personally loved Link's green tunic and pointy green hat combo, it's a unique and fantastical costume design that separates him from the average (aka generic) Tolkien-esque white boy fantasy elf (a quality that BotW's various costumes fall into more often than not.).
:P

It also has a lot to do with blue being a better contrast to the green pastures of the game. Link "pops" much better in blue.

Edited original post, i still think that their reasoming for ditching the hat is dumb as fuck. Honestly it's a major reason for me not being that hyped for the game (other than the uggo washed out color scheme and bad AA), but now i see that you can unlock it by beating the shrines so at least that's something however... with such an iconic outfit if they're gonna change it they should give you the option between different outfits from the get-go OG included because to me, he isn't Link if he is not all decked in green with the pointy hat.

Hahaha what a dumb idiot for not wanting to buy an ugly overpriced McDonald's toy before it was revealed it's the only way to use legacy outfits in BotW. Gotta pay an even more absurd amount than the already ridiculous MSRP? Lmao that's what you geeeettttt 👌😂💯

If you're gonna give such stupid reasoning then don't give any at all. BotW doesn't look different enough (art style wise) from SS that the hat suddenly stopped looking good with the "power" available on the switch, that's just a load of crap if anything beefier specs should make it easier to render a hat in a more believable way. Fucking Nintendo execs and their moronic responses all the fucking time... ugh...
The more you push fidelity the more certain things start to stand out. I pointed out that the tunics look great in this engine, however, when it comes to the physics, they look really goofy, they clip through a lot of equipment and bounce profusely. Still, big fan of how all the classic costumes look in this art style.

Agreed, just saw the classic LoZ costume and it looks awesome, shame that you need to beat all shrines before you can wear it. I would gladly pay for it as DLC if it meant that i could play the WHOLE game using it (first playthrough).

Love the amount of options they give us to dress up link. I kinda wish they would've let us dye his hair too! Just imagine the Links we could have with brown hair, or black.
Or even pink!

Well, ypu can buy the 8-bit Link Amiibo or any of ther Link amiibos for the classic costumes.

God I wish the TP costume was just available for purchase

I get why it isn't, they like money, but I don't have fifty dollars for the damn TP amiibo or the OOT one.

You could just wait a bit and buy the Twilight Princess specific amiibo for $16 they'll be releasing sometime soon with the next wave of Zelda amiibo (including Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword)

They had trouble making his classic green hat which even corresponds to the entire series' lore look good because it was too hard to make a realistic hat with modern graphics?

I don't mind the hat being gone but the excuse is absurd considering the Amiibo outfits.

Sometimes Nintendo is brilliant. Sometimes they sound downright incompetent. It's so bizarre.
