Nintendo Direct: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

So are they doing the "Mario is from Brooklyn and ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom" thing again here? Seems like he doesn't know where he has ended up, doesn't know Toad, etc. So it seems like this doesn't follow the game canon (if there is such a thing) at all really. In the games he isn't from the real world, he's from the Mushroom Kingdom.

Well Shiggy signed off on it so

This will be fun, and it seems Nintendo wants it to be very family friendly which is awesome too.
This has been their whole company ethos since like forever.... where you expecting anything less?

Hope we get some cool mario suits in this.

It looks great hope they pull it off.

Didn't expect that comment to be controversial.

Universal can be… interesting at times… even with animated stuff.

Just happy Nintendo seems to want this to remain very family friendly, kids hopefully don't have to worry about stuff going over there head or complex issues.

Nintendo is the licensee, sure, but it's a Universal / Illumination film at the end of the day.

Not controversial just surprised you might think it would have been something else............its Nintendo's IP pretty sure they've had a big hand in this, it looks perfect.

Zelda
next please.

Edit: sorry fat thumbs on my phone

I can't see Zelda happening tbh

I was absolutely blown away with this. ❤️
Definitely going to watch this in 4D if possible!

I'm honestly relieved Chris Pratt isn't trying to mimic Charles Martinet's voice for Mario. I mostly can't wait to hear Charlie Day as Luigi. 💚

Maybe we'll get an incredibly well made METROID or ZELDA movie someday? ✨

If(when) this is successful i dont see any reason why not.

Why do you think that? I think its perfect for an animated movie.

Something about the complexity/ slightly darker themes makes it seem more difficult to pull off than a light hearted, straight forward Mario adventure

No worries. I get it, that is certainly the expectation. I was just happy that Miyamoto emphasized they want audiences of all age involved. It's an IP that is many peoples introduction to video games of all ages, and I want this movie to appeal universally as well.

Have a good night, dude!

I find 3D and especially the 4D shit really annoying.

Imax all the way.

Excuse my ignorance because I haven't been to a movie theater since before the pandemic, but what the heck is 4D?

Gas masks with timed smells
Sweet, I always wondered what the mushroom kingdom smelled like

j/k I'm anosmic, and now I'm offended and angry

Lets face it ive not seen many that many shops selling shampoo in the kingdom. Its full of mushrooms and Mario spends half his time down drains, there's a good chance it fucking stinks.

Because he about as much a Mario as Ryan Seacrest.

You just need the voice that opens '64. Thats what Mario sounds like to me. Might be annoying for a full movie but in my head that's what he sounds like. Pratt's a bit too one note for me.

Watch it with jap audio and subtitles then.

I hate that "echo-y spine-tingling piano rendition of some old theme song" cliche.

The first few bars of the Mario song started and I was like "hell yes!!!" Then it switched to that piano thing and completely killed my boner.

Come on bro, I already know it's the Super Mario Bros movie, you don't need to do this shit

I'm pretty sure Mario being from Brooklyn is canon, or at least, was.

"
One of its first mentions in a game is in Mario's Time Machine, in which upon being asked if he was from Italy (due to his accent) by an imperial ruler in China, Mario says that he is from Brooklyn, New York. Of course, granted the time period, the feudal lord did not know what Brooklyn was.

According to early media such as the instruction booklets for the SNES version of SimCity[1] and console conversions of Mario is Missing![2], the Super Mario 64 Shogakukan[3] and Nintendo Power[4] guides, as well as the DIC cartoon shows and Nintendo Comics System, the Mario Brothers are from Brooklyn."

https://www.mariowiki.com/Brooklyn

But, I don't know of any other franchise creator who cares less about canon than Miyamoto.

Yeah, I also read that exact wiki entry, lol. But this was something that was invented for the American market, and Miyamoto was just like "sure, whatever", because as you say he doesn't really give a shit. And I would still argue that in the proper Mario "canon" he isn't actually an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. He's just an inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom. There's no indication in any mainline Mario game that he is originally from the real world.

A Zelda animated film would be a dream come true for me

But where would it fit in the timeline 🤔

That actually looks really good! I will definitely be going to see this :)

And if we get a Zelda movie it absolutely has to have a similar art style to Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom. Maybe even something like a Studio Ghibli movie.

Ghibli (Mononoke) -> Zelda -> Ghibli

I suppose it depends on how well it is implemented for each individual film. I saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 4D and it was an amazing experience! 💚

4D movie showings usually have a mix of physical sensations, such as the seats moving with the action on screen, as well as wind, water sprays or mists, and sometimes scents. It can be really fun if they implement it well! :)

Bowser sounds good
Toad sounds good
Mario sounds 100% Chris Pratt (Horrible)

Mario's face is awful! Why didn't they make it more like the games when everything else is?
Maybe if enough people complain they will change his face like sonic.
